TubeRadio Redefines Online Music Listening

It’s not uncommon for us here at Crenk to come across web applications that do the same thing, the only differences are that some might do it better or worse than another. In this case, the team has come across a very interesting music listening application called TubeRadio.

Once again for the music lover in all of us, this just astounds me. Now it does not have the capability to tap into your own stored music, but as powerful as this search engine is, this could very well replace my Pandora or Last.Fm efforts, even if only for a little while. TubeRadio calls itself the Youtube for music. After you see the video below, you’ll know what I mean.

So what do you think? They search is amazing and very thorough. I’m surprised at how music it can find, and even more so by how seamless the integration of listening and/or watching your music can be. During the video the speaker mentions it being like your personal MTV. Yeah, MTV, from when it used to actually play music.

My experience with TubeRadio has been a good one. I’ve found what I want to listen to, it streams everything smoothly with little problem. In my opinion the only thing really missing is the ability to tap into my own music, but I can overlook that for now since I’m lining up some great music of my own, and of other recommended playlists.

Online Music Search with JukeFly

If you’re a music junkie like I am, chances are you have multiple mp3 players lying around, probably a ton of music on your computer, external drives, and/or stored off-site in cloud storage somewhere. Music for me defines who I am and is attached to a lot of my memories. While some people tie their memories to sights, sounds, and smells, I’ve always tied my memories to music. Which is why when something new makes it easier for me access my music and listen to what I want to when I need to, then I’m all for it.

There’s a web application that I’ve just been introduced to called JukeFly. The concept of Juke Fly is simple, if not multifaceted. For starters it’s a great way to search music. The interface allows you to find your music, but not just the audio, it will pull video from YouTube and a variety of other sources to give you a complete look at the music you’re looking for. It also pulls album covers, lyrics, group information, and other extras that make for an interesting experience. So as a search I was able to find a lot of what I was looking for, and see extras that I have never seen before like live performances, behind the scenes extras, and yes, even other people covering the music. I found this to be an interesting extra to just searching and playing music.

Add on top of that layer the ability to play YOUR music from just about anywhere as long as the main computer you’re pulling from is one and has an online connection. So if you’re traveling and accessing another computer, or if you don’t want to carry your music with you on your laptop, you can simply install the small installer that comes with JukeFly, go through the settings, and that’s it. It will read your music folders, pull the necessary data and you can listen to your music library from wherever you are.

There are some other options out there that offer music search and remote access, so perhaps this is not something entirely new, but I found the interface easy to use, and had a fun enough time finding some old music I had not heard in awhile. Social Networking with 6rounds Expands Online Community

Social networks as they exist depend on the number of friends you start off with and thus you expand your network based on your existing network and grow from there. For many, not having an online presence makes it heard to start a social network when there is no online network to utilize to start. For many this can be frustrating and for many becomes the reason why they do not adopt the social scene. How much is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google involved in your common day activities? Did you ever ask yourself that? Where would you be if those didn’t exist?

Well there thousands of those existential questions that you may or may not asked yourself, and there’s no need to get real philosophical about this, but we sure can be certain that those technologies, web apps and more have an important presence in most of our days.

YouTube to Pay One-Hit-Wonders

We’ve all been sitting in the office, relaxing at home or on the bus and decided to check the old e-mails. Low and behold there’s one from your old buddy Jeff with a link to a YouTube video. What the hell, it’s not like your busy or anything. So you decide to give it a try. It turns out to be one of these one hit wonders that have their fifteen minutes of fame before being forgotten about and dissolved into the abyss.

Well now YouTube is going to form advertising partnerships with the makers of the videos. For example, David Devore filmed his son all loopy after been given sedative by the dentist. The video got over 28 Million views with the creator getting over $10,000 in ad revenue – that’s not exactly chump change for what you thought would be a funny video for friends and family to enjoy.

I think that this is actually a cool idea. It will keep people posting on YouTube and it may inspire creativity. But for the most part it’s an internet giant giving some of its haul back. YouTube didn’t really have to do this – they were perfectly comfortable where they were being the internets largest video provider. Maybe they’re softening the blow for a huge bombshell?!

Fred No Longer #1

If you use YouTube or just happen to have a pulse then you’ve probably heard of Fred (pictured). This is a popular mini-show on YouTube which features a troubled teenager named Fred talking about his teenage life and all the perils of it. For ages, the show held the No. 1 spot on Youtube. This was based on the amount of subscribers to the show which currently stands at 1.36 Million.

Now, Fred has been knocked down from number one after Nigahiga climbed to the top with over 1.9 million subscribers.

YouTube loves these miniseries as they are easy to monetize and to strike up deals with. Another popular miniseries that was on YouTube in the past was ‘Ask a Ninja’. This show again brought in tonnes of advertising revenue for YouTube and drove those who didn’t subscribe to the podcast to their website.

This recent change in the longstanding leader boards shows that the competition for online-only entertainment is heating up and may well begin to rival TV over the next few years.

Im not really too sure why Im writing about this on Crenk, apart from the fact that it was on a technology news site. This morning I posted a comment on a Techcrunch article about YouTube Founder Chad Hurley funding the USA Formula 1 team, and I was the first person to comment and thought it was funny to see the comments to follow. Google Acquire Video Compression Company

Google have just announced that they have acquired a new technology company that will serve YouTube very well indeed.

That have just invested shares worth over $106 million dollars in On2 Technologies which are a video compression company. This new venture could change YouTube forever giving it faster download speeds and less buffering as a result.

This may also help to cut Google’s massive bandwidth bill of over $300 million per year that is necessary to keep YouTube up and running. By compressing the size of the videos (some of which are as big of 2GB since HD was introduced) this would make the site smaller and easier to manage while attracting more because of a better user experience.

“Because we spend a lot of time working to make the overall web experience better for users, we think that video compression technology should be a part of the web platform.

“To that end, we’re happy to announce today that we’ve signed a deal to acquire On2 Technologies, a leading creator of high-quality video compression technology.”

Google Mobile: Links Getting Shorter and Smarter

If you have some kind of mobile addiction and feel the necessity to constantly check your email with your mobile; I’m pretty sure that you usually get uncomfortable trying to use the small screen on your phone. Well this is not a revolutionary invention, but it keeps reminding me that Google is trying to keep things simpler: “Smart Links” automatically shortens long links and converts them into named links.

Of course these links, at least for now, will only work with Google related sites: Google Maps, Google Sites web pages and YouTube videos (but they are expecting to make it available soon for Google Docs as well).

There’s an important disclaimer about the use of this feature: only works with plain text emails.

Marina at Hot For Words Releases Her First Book, But Lack of Substance!

Marina from Hot For Words has just released her new book. It provides a series of words and their origins, but at the same time is also provides just as many photos of her im guessing doing some modeling. Im not really too sure if this is a book or just a mix between a calendar and a down graded version of playboy.

Marina is quickly becoming one of the biggest stars on YouTube while also making a huge amount of appearances on television in the US. It is great to see her doing well and she plays on her look brilliantly. I really do hope she enjoys her success and can actually build on this popularity and provide something of substance, not just be a model with a different angle.

Screenjelly Records Your Screen

Screenjelly is perhaps the easiest screen recorder you'll ever use.

There are a lot of applications that claim to be the leader in capturing and recording your screen. Well I’m not making that claim with Screenjelly, but I will say it’s the easiest I’ve ever used.

Why?

Well unlike most other free screen capture applications, you don’t need to create a profile or sign up for an account. You also don’t need to download anything or log-in for access, you simply go to the site and start the process. The ease of use is a welcomed approach for new users who are not familiar with existing screen recording applications. There is little barrier into the service and users do not get mired down with having to check their emails to authorize emails and other such necessities when creating a new account.

Screenjelly also has a close relationship with Twitter, where you can easily share your recordings directly with your followers, and instantly get feedback. It’s pretty tempting if you’re looking at doing something quick. There are no screen share capabilities to pass it on to someone else, there’s not meeting function for chat function to share with other users, this is just purely setup to record what’s on your screen and the audio being sent via your microphone.

Warner Bros. -v- YouTube

Those of you who like to watch music videos on YouTube may have become aware (and indeed disappointed) when Warner Brothers Music decided that renewing a deal with YouTube to have an official video channel for their songs last December wouldn’t be such a good idea. Each and every official video from bands such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers was removed leaving only low-quality ones manually uploaded by fans – only to be quickly removed as well.

Now, discussions have reportedly started up again in attempt to thaw the mini Cold War that has developed between the two companies over the past six months of failed talks. Both companies failed to comment on the talks but YouTube will be eager to fully restore the videos as they already have contracts with other big companies such as Sony Music and EMI.

More intriguingly, CNET.com reported that other companies have stated that the conflict between YouTube and Warner Bros. was much more complex and deep. However, they refused to go into any serious detail as to what they meant.

If these claims are true, then it may be a while until we see WB videos up on YouTube again.

Google is making a big effort trying to set differences with any other big corporation. That’s why they are always updating all the information and strategy for you to feel more comfortable and secure about anything that Google says. Also, the “reliability” concept it is something that they want to introduce in people whenever they are thinking about Google.

One of the coolest things that I found is the Google WebMaster Central Blog, tons of resources and articles available there. And one of the interesting related stuff that I found there is the Google WebMaster Central Channel in YouTube; with a number of very nice and short tutorials and general concepts videos.

Clipta Video Search Offers More Results

For a long time YouTube has been the king of the video search. There have been numerous other video sites, and like the rest, they all fall short in their ability to really attract a wide audience onto their site. Recently I was made aware of Clipta Video Search, in what appears to offer a better interface than YouTube and offering more diverse results.

Clipta also offers distinct categories to make it easier to find videos with less of a chance that a mislabeled video would be placed under any given category. The community on here appears to be active and there is definitely some control behind the scenes to offer the users a better experience. While it may not rank as high as YouTube for your video searches, give it a try!

YouTube has always been the number one destination online to see quick short videos of pretty much anything. Now YouTube has added a new feature to its USA site, tv shows and movies! Professionally produced dramas, comedies, documentaries, cartoons, and news programs.

So why the addition? Simple, professional content is a lot easier to monetize than user generated content. According to the New York Times, Google has signed agreements to distribute content from Sony, Lions Gate, CBS, MGM, and other studios.

The move will allow YouTube to place pre-roll, post-roll, and interstitial ads in video content, something it doesn’t do with user generated videos.

Right now, the selection of TV shows and movies on YouTube is rather sad. Most of the content consists of old programs that you probably forgot existed, plus one new show from CBS: Harper’s Island. Since Fox and NBC are the driving forces behind Hulu, it’s not likely that we’ll see their content on YouTube anytime soon.

Google (YouTube) Partner with Universal Music Group for Vevo

I’m sure the majority of our readers have already heard about the new music video partnership between Universal Music Group and Google (Youtube). I thought I would just quickly recap and add in the press release and then discuss why this is a great idea.

Presently, UMG’s YouTube video channel has more than 3.5 billion views, making the UMG channel the most watched on YouTube.

Google has been struggling for a long time about how to actually monetize YouTube affective. Most advertisers aren’t happy about their ads being shown next to user generated content, while at the same time YouTube costs are skyrocketing and they cant afford to keep going the way they are.

Thus, Google has acknowledged that it is much easier to sell advertising next to controlled quality content, and that is why they have now partnered with Universal Music Group and is about to launch this new music video service. A music video portal is much needed on the internet and Universal don’t have the technology skills needed, but they do have the content, so that is where Google comes in. Additionally, Google is an advertising company, that is what they do and they do it very well.

The verdict is that Vevo is a great idea and it has been much needed for some time now. Hosting and bandwidth costs associated with Universal on YouTube will now be moved over to Vevo and because advertising revenues are going to be much higher, it will be more efficient for Google to offset costs with these videos. Revenues will increase and bandwidth will be moved away from YouTube and into Vevo, but this isn’t going to help monetize YouTube videos more effectively, it is just a diversification tactic.

Muziic – Playlists from YouTube’s Catalogue

There’s a whole host of music streaming solutions out there now; Last.FM, Spotify, SeeqPod, SongBird. All of them trying to carve out a little niche in the rapidly changing online music market. Any new player in the market has really got to stand out in terms of content and user experience if it hopes to get any kind of traction.

So how does Muzzic differ from it’s competitors, and how does it hope to gain users’ loyalty? They’ve got the content issue fairly well covered; their program crawls YouTube’s catalogue, logging all the songs by title and artist. The search seems pretty comprehensive – even odd little things like Kutiman’s Thru You series, and Swede Mason’s hilarious oddities are recognised.

There’s also a little sidebar to browse user’s upload channels by genre – this is pretty limited though, and there’s no way of knowing what you’re going to find in one particular person’s upload list. They work fairly well as mini radio stations or preset playlists though. You can build your own playlists, a single track at a time, or pick tracks to play from your search results. Muziic’s player also brings down the video for whatever you might be watching and plays it in a tiny little window next to the progress bar.

So is it any good? It’s better than last.fm for the fact that you can pick your own specific tracks, rather than have to listen to something like what you had in mind, but essentially it’s like a miniature version of a YouTube quicklist, nothing massively innovative, and more limited than SongBird in that it only draws down from YouTube – a massive catalogue, granted, but not compared to pulling down tracks from the whole web, especially now YouTube has vowed to take down all the content from PRS artists. Not having any audio ads is nice, but the playlist management is so much more comprehensive and cool on Spotify that I’d bear Roberta whining on at me, as well as their more limited catalogue for the privilige of playing through my search results and not having to add tracks to a list one at a time. There’s no music discovery functionality, and worst of all, the tracks occasionally just stop playing for no reason.

All in all a nice try, and probably worth experimenting with before you go back to Spotify.

Performing Rights Society Force YouTube to Remove All Music Videos for the UK

There has been a lot of talk overnight about YouTube (owned by Google) not being able to come to a royalty deal with the PRS in UK, thus leading to all music videos being removed from YouTube effective immediately. Here are links to the statement about the situation from YouTube and the PRS.

I don’t want to just run through what many other sites and news sources are writing about, I wanted to discuss why a solution didn’t happen and what is going to happen next to both the PRS and YouTube.

YouTube and the PRS couldn’t come to a royalty deal mainly because the PRS were asking for a lot and they were providing no real information in return. The PRS were asking for blanked royalties but weren’t able to specifically say what artists would receive the royalties and what amounts they would receive. YouTube stated the following:

“PRS is now asking us to pay many, many times more for our license than before…we would lose significant amounts of money with every playback. In addition, PRS is unwilling to tell us what songs are included in the license they can provide so that we can identify those works…that’s like asking a consumer to buy an unmarked CD without knowing what musicians are on it.”

It is kind of like the PRS just expected YouTube to meet their demands no matter what they asked. In addition, on the PRS statement for some reason they mentioned Google’s last quarter revenues for 2008 in which have completely no relevance in this case. The PRS still seem to be using old methods to try to force companies into agreements that just simply aren’t realistic in this current economic climate. Remember that Pandora is not in the UK anymore because the PRS couldn’t offer them a decent agreement and forced them to basically close up shop in this country.

This leads me to believe that there is now a potential for YouTube to launch a spinoff site as already reported with all four major labels, which will attract high levels of advertisers and also possibly sidestep old music companies like the PRS.

No more just Google Adwords CPC ads on YouTube cause they have just added a sponsored videos section. Anyone can now start and run a campaign for their videos directly on YouTube and they all based on CPC.

Concerned about costs? Don’t worry – Sponsored Videos puts you in complete control of your spending. There’s no minimum spending requirement–the amount you pay for Sponsored Videos is up to you. You can, for instance, set a daily budget of five dollars and a maximum cost of ten cents for each click on your ad.

Currently they only support users in the USA, but im sure that they will be expanding this very soon to other countries.

TuneUp Cleans iTunes on Mac

Too often music information is ignored once it’s been put into a player. For casual listeners, information like song title, track number, or even album art seems irrelevant in light of the actual song playing. For those of us that truly love our music, enthusiasts of digital music if you will, ensuring that all of our music is organized, labeled, tagged, and played correctly is like an art form.

In the old days music was catalogued by hand, hours spent finding names, album art, and meta-information that music needs in order to show correctly on the player. Those days are long gone, and many small plugins to iTunes, Winamp, and the other major players have come out to assist users with this tedious but necessary task. For those of us that still hang out onto iTunes, TuneUp has finally made its way to the Mac, and it’s really making an impact.

TuneUp uses the Gracenote database of over 90 million songs to correct the information. The interface is simple and offers a bevy of choices for taking care of your digital music library. With simple drag and drops, your music is referenced against the Gracenote library, but information such as release date and genre is even included for all of your tracks to give you the most depth for your query.

The application also plugs you into other social sites like YouTube. By clicking the “Now Playing” tab you are offered other media that is associated with the track you are playing. If the band has any videos, or fans have done something related to the song your listening to, you will be notified through this feature. To offer even more incentive, the “Now Playing” selection will also provide you concert information for your favorite artists, current, concise, and useful.

Now all of this does come at a small price. Installing the plugin will allow you 500 song corrections and 50 album art updates, but afterwards there is a pay model to keep the application funded. For $12 you can get full access to the application for 1 year, but for $20 you get a lifetime membership that will allow you for correct your entire digital library for life.

Critics will say that paying for this service would be useless especially when most users only adjust their library once or twice in a lifetime. I don’t necessarily agree with that, but nevertheless, even if that were true, the addition of the “Now Playing” features is reason enough to keep this little application handy.

Twones The Music Lifestream Aggregation Service. Friendfeed But Only For Music Sites

Today, Amsterdam based Twones launches in private beta. Twones is a new Music service that tracks the music you’re playing on your computer (iTunes, WMP, Winamp) AND on 18 web services (Youtube, Last.fm, Myspace, Muxtape etc.).

Twones is funded by concert giant Live Nation (source: hypebot ), with TheNextWeb having a minor stake in the company as well. Additionally, Twones shares office space with TheNextWeb.

Twones’ goal is to make playing music on the web more organized and enjoyable. “Let real people, relevant to you, collectively ﬁlter and recommend music and music services”, says Tim Heineke who with Diederik Martens and Johannes La Poutre founded Twones. “Our goal is letting users find great music and sites and services through relevant people on cool music sites. We work together with the other services, we don’t compete.”

The only thing that Twones is missing is the music. Other than embedded YouTube videos, to actually play a song you have to click through to the original music service where it was streamed from in the first place. Twones is more about trying to capture the musical meta-data of the Web, socializing around music, and organizing it.

The service itself really needs to have the ability to play songs from within the site and create playlists. Until this happens I cant really see the service having a real reason to use it.

YouTube Off Site Video Players Now Have Search Option. Plus New Google Image Search Tool

Youtube seems to have added a very interesting feature to their off site video players. I’m really not too sure if anyone has already reported about this, but Youtube video players which are hosted off the Youtube site now have their own drop down search tool. I have added the video below so you can have a look:

This is a great idea! Now any Youtube off site video player is pretty much as useful as being on the Youtube site itself. Any video can be played in the one player. I admit because the player can be quite small at times, the search results don’t show too many results at once, so you have to be pretty specific to find the exact video you want. However this is a great addition from Youtube!

Additionally, when searching for an image to use I came across this,

When using Google image search instead of searching then finding an image then if that isn’t the right image, then you have to go back and keep doing the same process. Thus getting a little annoying. However, now you can search straight in Google image search while still looking at a page. I know, not big news but just thought someone actually might be interested in this.

Is YouTube Infected?

It was reported over on Techcrunch and Crunchgear that there wa a virus that was running rampant across the YouTube network with the certain embedded videos. It was reported that Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox were targeted, later reports said it was just IE.

The virus was reportedly named Actns/Swif.T and contains a phishing scam that directs uses to a website with an embedded .SWF and then installs a program called “Antivirus 2009.” Users were warned of this potentially damaging malware by avoiding weird pop-ups, requests for personal information, or re-direction to unknown sites.

The story was later recanted as it appeared to be a YouTube specific situation. On the back end the virus protection service being used was returning false positives identifying code within certain embedded videos as malware. The entire incident is harmless, and there is no security breach on the YouTube network. Spokesperons from YouTube are handling the situation and ensure us that YouTube is currently safe and free of any malware problems.
