A lot of people thought that Windows 8 would have a black screen of death, but after making it available for release yesterday it turns out to not be the case. In reality they have a very nice blue screen of death.

So what do you do if you get hit by this lovely virus? A non-techy person could take it to a computer repair shop and spend anywhere from $85-$150 to get it fixed. Or for you geeks, you could fix it yourself using the following steps:

(Please note the following steps are for experienced users only – if you are not comfortable performing any of the below steps, take the computer to a professional!)

1)      Immediately boot into Safe Mode (with networking) and do not leave this until you are done! (Mashing F8 at the boot screen will do this on most computers – read the boot screen if F8 doesn’t do the trick)

1. If you have to reboot at any time, make sure you boot back into Safe Mode!

2)      Download and run RKill: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill. This will terminate the virus from running and allow you to clean up the computer. Any of the download links should work – they just have various names to confuse viruses.

3)      You need to be able to see the folders/files which are hidden. To do this, do the following:

1. Click your start menu
2. In the ‘run’ field, type “cmd” and hit enter
3. Type: c:*.* /d /s –h

• **The virus may make files read-only as well. If so, include –r.
• **If the virus makes files system files, add –s.
• Do NOT add any unnecessary –r or –s commands. Only use these commands if needed.

4)      Make sure you have the following programs installed and updated:

1. Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/)
2. Super AntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com)
3. Remove ANY other antivirus program you have as most don’t live up to their promises and often do more harm than good (ESPECIALLY Norton, McAfee and AVG).

5)      Run a FULL scan on both Security Essentials and Super AntiSpyware.

6)      Clean up your registry! (If not comfortable with this, pay for a professional cleanup!)

1. Go to Start –>Run–>’regedit’ and hit enter, then ‘Ok’ or ‘Yes’
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER–>Software–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
   i.      Remove anything which looks suspicious and is not a file you recognize. For instance, an entry with a name like FKA546542EJJAL and stored in a temp file is probably a virus (EXAMPLE ONLY). This is also a good time to remove unnecessary programs from starting up at boot time.
3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER–>Software–>Microsoft–>WindowsNT–>CurrentVersion–>Winlogon
   i.      Again, remove anything suspicious. If you don’t see anything obvious, DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING.
4. Go to HKEY_USERS–>’user name’ or ‘.DEFAULT’–> Software–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
   i.      Remove suspicious files as mentioned above
   ii.      Do this for EVERY user
5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE–>SOFTWARE–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
   i.      Remove suspicious files (be EXTRA careful here as some of these files are necessary for system files to run at startup. Again, if not sure, take it in for a professional cleanup!)
6. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE–>SOFTWARE–>Microsoft–>WindowsNT–>CurrentVersion–>WinLogon
   i.      Double click on ‘Shell’ and make sure it ONLY says ‘explorer.exe’. If there is anything after it, delete it!
   ii.      Double click on Userinit and make sure it ONLY says ‘C:Windowssystem32userinit.exe,”. If there is anything after it, delete it!

7)      Lastly, do a quick file cleanup

1. Go to C:WindowsSystem32
   i. Sort by Date Modified – click twice so you see the most recent date on top
   ii. Going from the date you got infected (hopefully you are doing this the same day or the next day) remove any files which look suspicious (yet again, if you don’t know what you are doing, take it to a professional!)
2. Go to C:Windows and do as above but look at folders as well as files
3. Delete cookies and temp files (any self-respecting geek knows how to do this already)

So by now you have:

1)      Made your files viewable and usable again

2)      Removed the virus and any associated viruses or malware through using the recommended software

3)      Removed registry entries to prevent anything bad from loading on startup and thus re-infecting your machine

4)      Removed any negative system entries which may also be contributing to the problem.

You might have even discovered you had other spyware, malware or viruses you didn’t know about throughout all this. But if you did everything correctly, you should be clean. If not, now is definitely a good time to take the computer in for a professional cleanup as your machine likely has bigger problems than you were aware of. Good luck!

**Please note that running these commands will make EVERY file on the system viewable and editable, including previously hidden system files you shouldn’t mess with. Use extreme caution when working with files after doing this. If you aren’t comfortable with this, consider paying for a professional cleanup.

Microsoft seems to be the latest company to get App Store fever! There have already been a few Windows 8 leaked images and here is the latest. The above image is leaked from Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 and its of the new Windows App Store.

It seems like Microsoft is trying to bring together the designs of IE9, Windows and Windows Phone 7. The Windows App Store seems very similar to the design of Internet Explorer 9.

The Windows Phone 7 platform seems to be on a roll of late and it seems like their latest version has been floating around the place. Recently NoDo was released by Windows Phone 7, which featured copy and paste and multitasking. However, it seems like a Windows Phone Italy commenter has been using a handset that has even more recent software! This release is supposed to be called Mango and is the next major release for Windows Phone 7.

The commenter claimed that he installed the version when updating his Zune. Im not really sure whether that is true! Anyways, there is a new search button, but the rest of the changes seem to be under the hood.

There has just been another leak of a Windows 8 image. This image comes courtesy of Winreview.ru. There is a subtle difference including new min, max and close buttons, a flatter styling (to better align with Metro) and a few other nuances.

So far from an aesthetical point of view there isnt much difference between Windows 8 and Windows 7. However, it is still very early days and im sure there are a lot more releases to come.

Windows 8 is expected to RTM in 2012 with the latest rumor suggesting an early January 2013 retail availability.

How to test if IPv6 is available on the operating system:

An easy option to find out is the ipconfig command which displays network information in a command line window. To run the command press Windows-R, type cmd and hit enter. This opens the Windows command prompt. Now use the command ipconfig to find out if IPv6 is available on the computer. Please note that the following screenshot is showing ipconfig on Windows 7.

If you do not see an entry IPv6 Address in the listing it is not enabled and needs to be installed. The easiest way to install the IPv6 protocol under Windows XP is from the command prompt. Enter the following commands separately and press return after each of them:

• netsh
• interface
• ipv6
• install

This installs IPv6 under Windows XP. It is also possible to install the protocol under the network settings options of the Control Panel. Right-click on the appropriate network adapter and select Preferences from the selection. Now select Install on the screen and then Protocol from the available options. Locate Microsoft TCP/IP Version 6, a click on OK installs the selected protocol.

1. Open Network Connections
2. Right-click any local area connection, and then click Properties.
3. Click Install.
4. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, click Protocol, and then click Add.
5. In the Select Network Protocol dialog box, click Microsoft TCP/IP version 6, and then click OK.
6. Click Close to save changes to your network connection.

You can check again with the ipconfig command to make sure that the IPv6 protocol was installed successfully on the operating system.

Achieving high availability for services in organizations it is not an easy task, decisions makers in several companies do not consider this solution as viable considering the costs we have to assume in storage and the new layer of complexity added to our platform. StarWind iSCSI software appears to solve both of these problems.

StarWind provides the possibility to use a simple server with normal hard drives to act as an iSCSI (open Internet protocol) portal which is charge of offering remote storage to machines and easily transform those in high availability clusters for your services.  Also, using Windows Server 2008 R2 we will see that the procedure to create a cluster if we are using StarWind iSCSI is really simple.

To create a Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster using StarWind iSCSI software can be done within 5 steps (the complete guide available here):

1. Review requirements for the environment: Having one machine acting as an iSCSI server using StarWind software and at least to machines, same hardware baseline, to conform the cluster.
2. Install StarWind iSCSI SAN software: Easy step, just follow the wizard.
3. Configure and create storage within StarWind iSCSI: This application has a very intuitive console to administer the resources, so you won’t find much problem completing this.
4. Install Failover Cluster feature in machines and run validation wizard: The validation wizard will execute several tests to the servers in order to assure us that the cluster will be stable.
5. Create Windows Server 2008 R2 Cluster: A three-step wizard that, if we executed the validation without any problem, this wizard should complete in the same way.

Windows desktops are indeed one of the most common places where we feel very comfortable, the simplicity and the fact that it did not have significant changes through the years are one of the reasons. But also, among the years, other possibilities appeared with other operating systems, making some interesting tweaks in user’s desktops.

Aximion makes our desktop look really cool, but it could take us a while to get used to it. One of the disadvantages is that the “Start” button is not available, so we must find our applications browsing around.

We’ve also announced in November of 2009, that OpenOffice 3 reached 1 million downloads, making it the most popular OpenOffice suite so far. The 3.3 build just added a few more small features:

Remote Desktop for most power and/or IT users represents the way of accessing a remote’s computer desktop by reaching it using an IP address; but is more than that. Using Remote Desktop protocol, users can access their applications, installed on a remote computer, without actually installing them locally.

This functionality, without an official announcement by Google, appeared in a Google forum; made by software designer inside the developing of Chrome: “We’re adding new capabilities all the time,” wrote Kačmarčík. “With this functionality (unofficially named ‘chromoting’), Chrome OS will not only be [a] great platform for running modern Web apps, but will also enable you to access legacy PC applications right within the browser.”

For me, almost anything representing legacy or an interoperability support sounds like a good idea; especially in today’s market when some are thinking that by being more restrictive they will win.

jQuery is a JavaScript framework which allows programmers to interact with HTML objects, design interfaces and add some interaction with other technologies like AJAX. The scalability you can achieve using this is tremendous, and this plugin is a fine example of that.

• 87% of spam analyzed came from botnets.
• Linux only used 36% of botnets to send spam.
• English language spam is the most used.
• Portuguese spam appeared as the second most used with 6%, large differences with other languages.
• The most common spam is the pharmaceutical spam. You know, Viagra stuff and that kind of thing.

Here’s a little sample about those pharmaceutical spam:

As part of this investigation, the analysis found that most of these machines are running also an open source mail transfer agent like Postfix or SendMail, which they’ve been configured to open up all the necessary ports, making those servers an easy target for hackers.

Most organizations use these kinds of “free” platforms to control their mail infrastructure and do not realize the big security concerns involved on each of them if those are not configured correctly.

There was a day when Windows Smartphone would have been an oxymoron, but today, the mold is broken with this experience and it all lies in the UI. For starters, the interface is focused on dedicated “hubs” of information giving the users an interesting way to group like applications under one roof instead of being overwhelmed with information. The touch movement is fluid, the layout easy to understand, and by nature the device is social. A person’s social activity makes this phone a great pleasure to have as you are able to keep up with their status updates integrated into the UI.

You can take photos, create albums, record videos, access Xbox Live, a store to purchase your application needs, and a productivity store for those of us looking to get a little work out of it while having fun too. The phone currently has no pricing, but it’s sure to wow folks who are not familiar with Microsoft making anything this cool and sleek. I don’t necessarily think it’s an iPhone killer, but we’ll see what happens when it hits the market. The Windows mobile range has been around for many years – originally as black and white PAs then eventually catching up with Blackberry. But their technology has become dated and has only ever been modified and given updates – now Microsoft say they’re recoding their entire thing and hope to get WinMo 7 out in the world by September.

They say that they’re working towards finalizing the coding for Win 7.0.0 by the summer months. LG have recently leaked that they will be launching a Windows 7 mobile phone in September, so this is starting to look very promising indeed.

In reality though, it’s about time Microsoft caught up. This overhaul is long over due and I’m sure it will be massively anticipated as September approaches.

Evernote 3.5 Windows in beta.

When Evernote first came out there was a lot of hype surrounding this all purpose information collector and sorter. Unlike anything that we had really seen before, Evernote allowed users to capture content either in video, internet, or photo, save it and store to the Evernote account and have all devices sync with your account. It was a great way to share information you would need later, or capture something as simple was scribbles on a napkin without actually having to carry the  napkin with you. For web surfers specifically the ability to save an entire page along with the URL or just highlighted content allowed us a new way to capture just what we needed without bookmarking an entire site. Evernote really changed the way we capture data on our mobiles and  now it gets an upgrade.

Evernote 3.5 for Windows was recently released in beta and it’s nothing significant, but does address a lot of previous annoyances. Evernote has always existed in many formats; an app, a browser button, and a desktop application rounds out how you can find Evernote. The desktop version for windows was nothing fancy, in fact it could be described as clunky, glitchy, with a UI that was not as intuitive as it could be. With it’s Apple counterpart running smooth and clean, it was a wonder why the Windows version could not mimic that same look and feel.

Some updates you will see are as follows:

• three views offered for looking at notes: List, Mixed, and Thumbnails
• geo-location tags activate a map that slides into place to show its location
• interface feels a lot more Windows 7 than its older counterparts
• search database has been improved, and you can save and edit your search filters
• multi-language spell check

So with these minor improvements we’ve seen a nicer desktop app under the hood. The application is still free, with a paid pro account alternative offering more functionality for the power users.

Now I admit in the past I had been going to Download.com, and found what I needed on there. But recently I was introduced to Softonic, and it’s equally as impressive as Download.com, but I’m just not a fan of the interface. I found it confusing, kinda clunky, and Download.com seems to have gotten the site structure of its heirarchy better laid out.

Still there’s tons of great apps on the site, which also features apps you should have. Sometimes you find apps that you didn’t now you needed, and that’s when you know that a site is bringing value to you. That value comes in what Softonic covers; Windows, Mac, Phones, Palm OS and Pocket PC’s.  Seems like a healthy library, and growing everyday.

Adobe Air makes it happen and over on the UK’s Sci-Fi website, they are offering an amazing Asteroids replica using your mouse cursor as a ship, and your file folders as the asteroids. As your folders come crashing into you, shoot them to scatter your files across your desktop for more target practice.

Nope, they just temporarily disentegrate as you release your frustration on presentations, projects, reports, and spreadsheets. Give it a try, destroy bordem for good and have a blast…literally.
