Windows Mobile 7 Features

The Mobile World Congress will be held in Barcelona this year and just in a few days more: February the 15th. And it is almost confirmed that Windows Mobile 7 will be presented to the community, taking a good overview of the incoming features.

For the rumors that leaked already, seems that it will have important enhancements (regarding with interoperability mostly) and some other similarities with other mobile OS. Let’s take a quick look:

  • The UI will be quite similar that we’ve seen in Zune HD, with a few changes to be confirmed.
  • Full Zune and XBOX integration.
  • Full support with Facebook and other social networking mobile apps.
  • Windows Mobile Device Center: No more. All of the sync options will be replaced by Zune software.
  • No multi-task support. Here comes the first similarity with iPhone OS; the applications will be paused while working in background.
  • No Flash support. Hmmm… seems that I’ve seen this before.
  • Applications will not be available to install by a separate storage. The only possibility to install applications will be using the “MarketPlace”. No, no “AppStore”, the name is “MarketPlace”.
  • MarketPlace will have a very cool option: “Try before you buy”.
  • There will be no support for OEM Interfaces. That means Sense UI, SPB Mobile Shell, Point UI, Infinity, and many others will not be allowed.
  • Release date: September 2010.

Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Caught on Film

Phonescoop were at CES in Las Vegas last week and managed to spot a phone floating around the convention. Only it wasn’t just any old phone. It was a Windows mobile phone running the new OS which is yet to be released – 6.5.3. The video above runs through all the new changes and make a note on how it’s more finger friendly.

Undoubtedly, we’ll be seeing this new OS very soon indeed is Microsoft are sending out phones running it to conventions. I’d say it will be available within the next month or two. As for now this video is as close as you or I will get.

Sync Your Mac and Other Devices with Sync-Mate

eltima softwareGone are the days when a humble mobile phone and a stand alone PC were all the high profile office worker, self-employed person or whiz-kid had. Now, we all have at least three or four devices ranging from laptops, to cell phones, to smart phones to MP4 players. And the demand for them all to work together has never been higher. This is where syncing come into question. Syncing same-brand and compatible devices may be easy but using generic programs to sync items such as MacBooks and Windows Mobile smart phones that are from two opposing companies is no easy task.

SyncMate, which is mate by Eltima is available at the domain www.syn-mac.com holds the answer to syncing you Macintosh with several smart phones such as Windows mobile and Nokia S-Series phones.

The software is downloaded to your Mac and used to sync organisers, meida, contact info, e-mails and other such useful data. One user, Ann Clifford said:

“I am using SyncMate mainly to synchronize my Todos, my Google calendar and my contacts. SMS Manager Function is very useful too. Oh, almost forgot! The new iTunes synchronization is very cool. It syncs all my music, which is very important to me. SyncMate is a total ActiveSync for Mac replacement.”

The software is available here and I highly recommend it for the power-users with a Mac.

Palm Fights to Stay Relevant

Remember Palm?palmos

You know the mobile device kings from long ago, yep, they are still around. Palm has attempted many times to reinvent itself with new products, and over time they’ve had a few hits every now and then. I remember when the Z22 came out, I bought one for my wife. When the Centro came out, I got one for a friend as well. But in the grand scheme of things Palm has remained relatively unknown in the battle of the three giants, Apple, Blackberry, and now Google, in the mobile device wars.

The Palm users I have met are adamant users of the product and will defend it despite its lackluster performance as a whole over the years. Despite the ups and down Palm is now on the verge of becoming a player in the online software arena.

Last night Palm released an online software store in an effort to not get left behind. The interesting moved was launched for all of its devices on both the Windows Mobile and the Palm OS platform, which will enable the company to reach out to a wider market, especially with their inclusion of the Windows Mobile users.

Can Palm remain relevant? Every time I think they are going down, they seem to jump right back into the fray. There’s definitely something to be said of an underdog like Palm. We’ll have to see how this works out for them.
