Newsy: News Aggregator But Shows The News from Multiple Sources in One Video

Today I came across a very interesting new video news site, which aims to provide news from not just one source but as many as possible. Newsy is the video news service that introduces a topic and then goes through relevant sources to find the best opinions from around the web.

Newsy covers topics such as world news, business news, technology, environment and more. The format of each show is simple, the introduce a basic topic and then search the web for the leading views on that specific topic for the day. Thus, it is kind of a news video aggregator, as it provides the leading sources in one simple place.

Im sure Newsy will become quite a popular site, simply because of how easy it is to see the latest news from multiple sources in one place. However, most users want to see a large number of headings in one simple place and normally the easiest way to do this is text, because there is still a limitation to how much you can fit into a view.

Cisco Systems Acquires Norway’s Tandberg Video Communications for $3 billion

Cisco Systems has announced today that its buying Norway’s Tandberg video communications business for $3 billion.

The deal should enhance Cisco’s own TelePresence business where it sells room-sized video conferencing systems that make you feel like you’re talking to people in the same room. These systems costs hundreds of thousands of dollars each but executives feel they can use them to save on travel costs. Tandberg is one of the chief rivals in the business and it makes specialized software for managing the conferencing systems and managing the connections between them.

This new deal is going to put a lot of pressure on Hewlett-Packard who have a very strong video conferencing business with their Halo product. In theory, video conferencing creates a lot of Internet traffic, which in turn helps Cisco’s core business of selling networking gear.

Cisco has bought 40 companies over the past five years, according to the New York Times. In the past week, merger mania has erupted, with Dell buying Perot Systems for $3.9 billion and Xerox buying ACS for $6.4 billion.

Blinkbox: Stream Great Movies…but at a Price

Getting fed up with MegaVideo’s 72 minute limit? YouTube, Limewire or MetaCafe not cutting it for quality, speed or selection? Then maybe it’s time to look else where –perhaps Blinkbox?

Blinkbox is a new start-up that streams movies and TV programs straight to your computer for your enjoyment. I was sceptical at first. It seems like every site you click on these days you’re offered great streamed films when what you get is actually a load of junk with Japanese subtitles streamed to you from a server in South Korea at an appalling speed – so much so you could probably fly to Korea, buy the thing on DVD and fly home again before the streaming video is finished ‘buffering’.

Blinkbox streams you high quality video that only takes a few seconds to load. For example, I watched Bronson which was only released on DVD a week or so ago. However, it’s all above board and as such you’ll be expected to pay. Bronson set me back £9.99 which is cheaper than the DVD. Other films can cost you al little as £3.

The selection could be better in terms of films from before 2007 but for recent releases you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Because Blinkbox was so easy and of such good quality, I didn’t really mind paying the charges to avoid the bad quality you get with free versions. However, if you’re tight on the old purse strings maybe Blinkbox isn’t for you.

VidPay: Video Ad Network for Major Video Portals

VidPay is an online service that allows users to advertise their websites or services on the internet through videos. Here’s a quick rundown of how it works. Basically, you sign up and upload an advertisement video to the site. You select your target audience (i.e. age, gender, nationality, interests, hobbies) and select a daily budget for your advertising campaign. Then you’re up and running.

Your video will appear as a featured video on websites and the more people that watch it the more you pay VidPay for promoting your site until your daily budget is reached at which your point your video is removed until the following day.

I don’t think that this is anything special or useful. There are better and more effective ways of promoting a website such as through networking, social media and SEO. Paying a company to put your video on the internet no matter who they’re showing it to, seems silly. Could you not simply do the same thing on YouTube leaving a link at the end of the video whilst having the added bonus of a channel page and user comments etc.. ?

Another drawback that limits the effectiveness is that the videos you pay to have plastered on the net are restricted to only being featured on Metacafe sites. All in all, if your advertising budget is big and you can’t be bothered to do an hour a week on Youtube, Twitter etc… or indeed on any of their affiliate programs such as this one, then by all means visit VidPay.

There have been a lot of people reporting about the Pirate Bay’s new video site, Techcrunch UK, Mashable and Boy Genius, but the story was broken by the leading site in the Torrent space, TorrentFreak.

The basics of the story are as follows, the Pirate Bay team has continued developing its video streaming site – which will open up to the public within 5 years. On The Video Bay users can share video clips without having to worry about getting them taken offline due to copyright violations, true Pirate Bay-style.

The Pirate Bay team themselves announced about 2 years ago that they were working on a video streaming site, but we had no idea when we would actually see something. Pirate Bay Spokesman Peter Sunde agreed that it might take a while before the site goes live and told us that “it will be done when it’s done, in the future, in like a year or five.”

For a long time YouTube has been the king of the video search. There have been numerous other video sites, and like the rest, they all fall short in their ability to really attract a wide audience onto their site. Recently I was made aware of Clipta Video Search, in what appears to offer a better interface than YouTube and offering more diverse results.

Clipta also offers distinct categories to make it easier to find videos with less of a chance that a mislabeled video would be placed under any given category. The community on here appears to be active and there is definitely some control behind the scenes to offer the users a better experience. While it may not rank as high as YouTube for your video searches, give it a try!

TinyChat Upgrades Amazing Video Chat Application

Video conferencing used to be a tech heavy, equipment demanding effort that was unheard of for the common person at home. Nowadays with the bevy of online tools available, video conference is accessible to just about anyone with a desktop/laptop and a webcam. Already in the plans for the next update are things such as country flags associated with the user, private messages via command, recording playback, and the ability to boot people from the chat that are not participating effectively.

There is no doubt that TinyChat is going to experience continued growth and their site welcomes its users and new members alike to interact with them. This easy and free to use application is a must have for anyone who continues to have group chat via IM, and does not want to pay for an account with Skype. With the added benefit of embedding it into your site and sharing it across various social networks, this is definitely an option for the vid-curious.

Sidereel is a video search engine that lets users easily find websites where they can watch their favourite tv shows and movies online for free. Sidereel doesnt host much of the content themselves, but they do have a lot of tools that help users discuss and share their favourite shows.

Sidereel is always upto date with all of the major tv shows on all the major networks in the USA and International. THe discussion section of Sidereel is a great place to see what other people are thinking about the tv shows or movies and the community is growing on a daily basis.

It is also great to see a professionally designed site that isnt cluttered without crappy ads everywhere.

There are so many user generated video sites available on the internet these days, but sometimes you might not want to see user generated content. Thus, I thought I would put together a very quick list of the best places to view the news online as if you were watching it direct from your television at home.

Livestation – Livestation is a free downloadable video players that streams live news, events, shows from some of the world biggest media companies. Livestation includes services like the BBC, CNN, Fox, MTV, Al Jazeera and more. The service is easy to download and it great to use. The player itself can be changed to any size and you are able to add additional news and radio sources that can be found on the Livestation website.

BBC iPlayer – The BBC iPlayer has been around for quite some time now, and even though they got a lot of harsh press at launch they have been quitely improving the service and it actually now isnt that bad. The iPlayer is a great place to head when you are looking for what has been happening from around the world in the last few days. On the iPlayer they have a dedicated section to BBC News in which will keep you up to date with the major headlines.

Hulu – Hulu is a partnership between News Corp and NBC Universal. Hulu is for USA users only at the moment and it allows them to watch their favourite TV shows, movies and of course news programs all for free. Hulu was born when News Corp and NBC werent happy with the revenues they were receiving from YouTube, so they formed a strategic alliance and launched a free online television service that has been growing at a rapid pace. Hulu has a dedicated news section which allows users to view news from major USA sources as well as smaller sources like Cnet.

Google (YouTube) Partner with Universal Music Group for Vevo

I’m sure the majority of our readers have already heard about the new music video partnership between Universal Music Group and Google (Youtube). I thought I would just quickly recap and add in the press release and then discuss why this is a great idea.

VEVO – UMG’s Premium Music Service Powered By YouTube To Launch In Coming Months

NEW YORK, NY and SAN BRUNO, CA, April 9, 2009 – Doug Morris, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music company and Eric Schmidt, Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive Officer of Google Inc., today announced that UMG and YouTube, a Google subsidiary, are working together to launch VEVO, a music and video entertainment service that will feature UMG’s premium video content.

At launch, people will be able to access UMG’s entire catalog of premium music video content, including professionally-created and full-length videos on VEVO, as well as artist-generated content and user-generated content hosted on YouTube. VEVO will also serve as a syndication platform, expanding the reach of the VEVO brand. This innovative platform is aimed at providing consumers the very best in digital music content while further extending UMG’s lead in the direct-to-consumer market.

Presently, UMG’s YouTube video channel has more than 3.5 billion views, making the UMG channel the most watched on YouTube.

Google has been struggling for a long time about how to actually monetize YouTube affective. Most advertisers aren’t happy about their ads being shown next to user generated content, while at the same time YouTube costs are skyrocketing and they cant afford to keep going the way they are.

Thus, Google has acknowledged that it is much easier to sell advertising next to controlled quality content, and that is why they have now partnered with Universal Music Group and is about to launch this new music video service. A music video portal is much needed on the internet and Universal don’t have the technology skills needed, but they do have the content, so that is where Google comes in. Additionally, Google is an advertising company, that is what they do and they do it very well.

The verdict is that Vevo is a great idea and it has been much needed for some time now. Hosting and bandwidth costs associated with Universal on YouTube will now be moved over to Vevo and because advertising revenues are going to be much higher, it will be more efficient for Google to offset costs with these videos. Revenues will increase and bandwidth will be moved away from YouTube and into Vevo, but this isn’t going to help monetize YouTube videos more effectively, it is just a diversification tactic.

Mooch: P2P Video Game Trading

Mooch has just announced that it has launched its peer-to-peer video game trading website to the public. Mooch provides video game players and owners an affordable and simple way to trade their old and used video games.

Instead of exchanging used titles at retail stores for a fraction of the original price, Mooch subscribers can enter a list of the games they have as well as the games they want, and Mooch’s patent-pending trading engine goes to work. Each step of the trading process is intelligently automated, including finding potential trades, balancing each trade, and even allowing users to print postage directly from the site.

Performing Rights Society Force YouTube to Remove All Music Videos for the UK

There has been a lot of talk overnight about YouTube (owned by Google) not being able to come to a royalty deal with the PRS in UK, thus leading to all music videos being removed from YouTube effective immediately. Here are links to the statement about the situation from YouTube and the PRS.

I don’t want to just run through what many other sites and news sources are writing about, I wanted to discuss why a solution didn’t happen and what is going to happen next to both the PRS and YouTube.

YouTube and the PRS couldn’t come to a royalty deal mainly because the PRS were asking for a lot and they were providing no real information in return. The PRS were asking for blanked royalties but weren’t able to specifically say what artists would receive the royalties and what amounts they would receive. YouTube stated the following:

“PRS is now asking us to pay many, many times more for our license than before…we would lose significant amounts of money with every playback. In addition, PRS is unwilling to tell us what songs are included in the license they can provide so that we can identify those works…that’s like asking a consumer to buy an unmarked CD without knowing what musicians are on it.”

It is kind of like the PRS just expected YouTube to meet their demands no matter what they asked. In addition, on the PRS statement for some reason they mentioned Google’s last quarter revenues for 2008 in which have completely no relevance in this case. The PRS still seem to be using old methods to try to force companies into agreements that just simply aren’t realistic in this current economic climate. Remember that Pandora is not in the UK anymore because the PRS couldn’t offer them a decent agreement and forced them to basically close up shop in this country.

This leads me to believe that there is now a potential for YouTube to launch a spinoff site as already reported with all four major labels, which will attract high levels of advertisers and also possibly sidestep old music companies like the PRS.

Hulu Content is Removed from Boxee. Will This Affect Their Offering and Growth?

Boxee has just sent out an email to bloggers alerting them that as of this Friday, they will be removing Hulu from their channel lineup. This comes at the request of Hulu. Apparently Boxee has been working to try to keep Hulu in their lineup for two weeks.

From the Boxee blog post:

we love Hulu. they have built a great product and brand (including one the best Superbowl ads this year)… the response has been amazing. people love watching many of their favorite shows on Hulu via boxee. last week we generated more than 100,000 streams for them…

two weeks ago Hulu called and told us their content partners were asking them to remove Hulu from boxee. we tried (many times) to plead the case for keeping Hulu on boxee, but on Friday of this week, in good faith, we will be removing it.

Hulu has also posted on the Boxee removal:

Our content providers requested that we turn off access to our content via the Boxee product, and we are respecting their wishes…Without their content, none of what Hulu does would be possible, including providing you content via Hulu.com and our many distribution partner websites…For those Boxee users reading this post, we understand and appreciate that you’re likely to tell us that we’re nuts. Please know that we do share the same interests and won’t stop innovating in support of the bigger mission.

Boxee only just release onto Mac and Ubuntu on the 8th of January and now they have lost one of their major sources of content. The Boxee service is a very simple one, they provide movies, tv shows and music all in one simple location.
