It will be interesting to see if Diglo can become a strong service if they will just get taken down by Hollywood, Major record labels, etc.

Tradeshift has managed to secure $7 million in funding for their social network for businesses. The funding round came from Notion Capital. Tradeshift have already had seed funding from Paypal who are their technology partner.

Tradeshift is a growing player in the business social network market with customers including the NHS, and the French and Irish governments.

Tradeshift was originally created in 2010 by pioneers in open e-business who created the e-invoicing system for the Danish government, it now covers over 180 countries with more than 50,000 registered businesses and is the world’s fastest growing business social network, with growth in 2011 of more than 60% per month.

“Tradeshift is undoubtedly one of the most exciting businesses we’ve come across since setting up Notion in 2009,” says Stephen Chandler, Managing Partner at Notion Capital. “Tradeshift is led by a team who are real subject matter experts in their field, extremely strong both technically and commercially and have a very clear vision of where they want to take the business – it has the potential to become the de facto business social network for B2B communications and processes. Tradeshift is the single most disruptive proposition to this market and is set to play a major part in its transformation.”

There was 2003, and a young fellow by the name of Mark Zuckerberg started with a draft idea for a social network; and the name he came up with was FaceMash.com. Now, more than 7 years later, the final social network name Facebook.com has over 500 million users and FaceMash.com is for sale.

This was Zuckerberg first domain for the Harvard social network, which apparently was a college version for “Hot or Not”. The idea of a social network started to grow, and the domain name selected end up with Facebook.com in 2004. By 2007, Mark Zuckerberg did not renew the first domain name and Rahul Jain took it.

FaceMash.com is now for sale in Flippa. The auction started at U$S8000, and the current bid is at U$S19000 with 15 days to go.

If you have an idea for a social network startup, then this is the domain name for you.

Yes, that’s right, you didn’t read “New”, it’s “Nude Social Network”. Skinbook uses the same basic stuff from other Social Networks, but the target is people who are nudist.

Providing a safe, fun and friendly place for likeminded people to connect!” announces the web site.

Skinbook it’s a Britain social network site where people can load their favorite nudist pictures and share them with their friends. But wait; there are some ground rules which you cannot avoid:

You cannot upload XXX photos. You know the type, those hardcore pics that could be offensive for others.

You cannot upload photos where only your genitals are showing.

Cannot comment or insult on someone else photos.

Even though it sounds like a bizarre site, if the regulations are in place, people can share their unique way of life with other peers.

The service is constantly updating and releasing new features. ‘Lists’ which launched towards the end of 2009 hasn’t really taken off that much but I think Local Trends might just.

Basically, you have the option to take the current trending topics and make it more localised. So if there’s something happening in America which is of no relevance to your area, it won’t be displayed in your Trending Topics because people from your area won’t be tweeting about it. Obviously, big global events such as the Haiti disaster or G8 meetings will attract attention from all over the world, but localised Trending topics can get quite annoying. Twitter sums it up as follows:

“Twitter trends began as a way to shed light on popular conversations. It’s interesting to know that one topic can now spread across the world in real-time, and Trends help us discover which of those topics are paramount on a global scale.”

“The big events that come up around the world will always become a global conversation, but what about the big events that only happen in your world that only matter to those around you? Or the slight differences in the way Californians perceive an event, like Obama’s election victory, versus those São Paulo, Brazil?” said @jennadawn on the Twitter blog. today.

They also say that the new feature will be monitored and improved through their API and via feedback. Nice to know Twitter cares about small European and Asian countries, as well as the North American market. Also, if you happen to live in a big country such as the US or France, you can localise the feature further by selecting cities instead of countries!

Most recently users have been looking for a rich desktop experience, something that Foursquare does not offer on their site. They offer options to change settings and such, but not a way to claim your location. Now that has changed thanks to a small development company that’s created FoursquareX. The desktop application, for Mac only, is an OSX based application that allows you to check-in but also allows you to see where your friends are based on an interactive map. Reading deeper into the way this application works, users will be happy to know that it offers the following beneficial features:

app runs in the background, sending you notifications when updates and check-ins are made

appears to use a Google map app and overlays your friends icons to show their location

if you’re looking to meet new people, you’ll be notified when people check-in whether you know them or not, giving you the chance to say “hi”.

Take a look if you’re a Foursquare fan and let us know what you think. So far I’m happy with it, and hope to see some type of port to the actual Foursquare app on the mobile because I can see this becoming a fully functional aspect of the mobile app.

Thus Godtube, now known as Tangle (presumably because God told them to change the name) was developed. Their tagline:

We help unite the Body of Christ by allowing you to connect with other Christians, Share the Gospel & grow in your relationships – All for the glory of Jesus Christ.

The site is essentially a Christian themed media channel, with boards for Christian music, user submitted videos about Christianity and discussing religion in general (supposedly allowing comment from both Christians and Atheists, but you’ve got to ask yourself which right minded moderate atheist is going to be hanging out on a God-themed social networking website), profile pages for Christians, a Christian version of Flickr, where you can post your photos for Christians to look at… Basically, an ugly version of Facebook, with added Christ. Oh, and they’ve got a store, http://www.christiangiver.com/ where you can buy lots of nice Heaven Approved products.

They monitor and approve all content before it is allowed to go live, “tangle differentiates itself from other social networks by monitoring and approving all content before it goes live on the site, which works to provide a safe and secure online experience.” [quote from their Wikipedia entry] – this may indeed help stop arguments getting out of hand, and 4chan style trolling, but it doesn’t seem to me that it would be conducive to free and open debate, and some of the things they approve seem like the usual old right wing conservative scaremongering, or lonely crackpots spouting religious diatribes. Still, we have to give marks for effort; at least they’re trying to stay engaged in discussion.

I find it a little disturbing when people try to put the seal of divine approval on essentially commercial things; this site doesn’t flaunt it’s Holiness in your face, and seems quite laid back and open, so perhaps I should be more open minded in turn, but who regulates these things? Seemingly anyone could purport to be speaking for a religious community or market you any old product with the name of a deity in their mouth, and have nothing to substantiate the support of that religion, or to differentiate their product from the next online service/coffee maker/radio alarm clock. Ultimately, religious bodies are so diverse that no one voice speaks for them all, but there are a lot of faces and voices on Tangle, and if you like your society with a whiff of pews and incense, then this might be the place for you – personally I don’t know why the God-fearing can’t just mingle with the rest of us sinners online – it seems a little insular.

No better time then to join a new fitness community called Phitter which claims to have “given phittness a phacelife”.

The service is similar to Twitter in that users are encouraged to post their daily exercise news, tips, advice and benchmarks. Also, you can post to your stream via the traditional web route or from mobile services such as SMS.

In a press release, the company said Phitter.com is a “phitness phocused community that encourages members to talk, or “Phit,” about fitness, weight loss, working out, dieting, exercising, and healthy living while making new “Phriends” and having “Phun!”

I think this is a great idea. Twitter has proven itself to be one of the most engaging of the social networks. Furthermore, lack of companionship and encouragement is the number one reason why people quit exercise programs. Phitter overcomes that problem by creating a real-time community for those getting fit, something forums and networks have failed to do in the past.

If you post “Feeling down, not in the mood for a run” you’ll be bombarded with inspiration and encouragement to get out there and get Phit!

e going out of style. API’s had opened up and similar social networks sprang up, each offering their unique twist to the game, with names that followed the web2.0 trend of dropping vowels. Some others were truly unique, Plurk is a

good example. Now admittedly I am not a fan of Plurk, never found a use for it, never liked the way conversations were held, but it had its following and it did what it did well.

The fact that Plurk was one of those forgotten social networks that not many people talk about, I found it interesting when they popped up in the press again, this time butting heads with computer giant Microsoft on what is a case of blatant theft of code to produce a network called MSN Juku, for their China based customers. Reported on TechCrunch, Mashable, and a few other tech sites, Microsoft quickly pulled the plug on the launch of MSN Juku and blamed the third-party vendor as the culprit for this incident.

Issuing an apology, Microsoft wanted to smooth things over with Plurk, saying that the product is no longer on the market and that swift action was taking with the third-party vendor. Plurk does not seem satisfied with that apology, though they noted that they were aware of it. It seems like Plurk is now considering all options available to them, to include legal action.

Now, in my opinion, Plurk has fallen off the face of the earth, I hadn’t heard of them in a very long time. Publicity like this is pushing them into the forefront again, with new eyes migrating over to their services to check them out. I’m not one to speculate…okay I will, but methinks that publicity like this would work to Plurk’s advantage and keeping this situation going can only mean good things.

Should be interesting to see if Plurk’s user base grows from this, naturally I don’t expect numbers to be shared, but is any press good press? In this case, perhaps yes.

Are you a fan of Plurk? If so, what do you like, if not, why did you leave? Leave your comments below!

But they’re hard to come by – and when you do they’re expensive. However, I’d like to introduce a great web app and social network for fine food lovers.

Gourmet Library is basically a big catalogue for fine foods and drinks ready to be ordered by you and then delivered straight to your door. The foods are broken up into several categories and you can order exact amounts of it by weight or volume depending on what it is.

You can also connect with other members and discuss products they bought. There are also dozens of user reviews for products which you can read before you buy.

The customer service seems really good. Postage is reasonable for most items and if whatever you bought is perishable, they’ll ship it in a cold-pack for you so it’ll still be fresh when you get it.

I’ve got several versions of the iPod for a variety of occasions, I’ve got streaming music players all over my computer, I’ve got sites bookmarked that stream audio from overseas; for me, there’s just nothing better than paying music for inspiration, clarity, and nostalgia. To increase my music listening abilities I’ve used plugins such as FoxyTunes to give me access to my music straight from my browser, but what if I’m not home or on my laptop. There’s a good chance I’ve got my mobile on me and I can stream from there, but for those of us always changing computers, or using public computers, there’s now an interesting option that we can participate with.

Stereo8 is a new stream audio web app that streams straight from your browser. No downloading, no installing, no problems. Just about any browser should work (I tested on Safari, Firefox, IE6 and IE7, Opera, and Chrome). Simply select a genre of music you want to listen to, and let the music play. You can interact with the music by voting on what you like, and those votes determine what’s played. Stereo8 calls it self a true internet radio with a twist. That twist is that listeners can vote and share music with one another making it a social community of sorts.

As I write this article I’ve picked the video game category and have listened to some of the biggest games from my present and past. In some of the other categories I was listening to songs that perhaps I was not a fan of myself, and some more obscure songs that I never even knew existed, which is not always a good thing. But if you’re looking to be introduced to something new and unique, far from the beaten path you’re used to traveling, then perhaps Stereo8 is for you. A few stations I found really solid, and just now they started playing the Terran theme from Starcraft, so that’s just an idea of the kind of music you’ll be listening to (at least on the game channel).

Thanks to Seth Godin‘s famous book of the same title, it’s forced us to think of our online networks and communities in a unique light. Much like primitive tribes of earlier times, we’ve now formed digital tribes where we’ve found comfort in connections with people of similar interests, habits, hobbies, and histories. The tribes we belong to have a simple connectivity of communication that we long to maintain, enter Gigatribes.

The concept of communicating with your tribe is easy to see in networks such as Twitter, Facebook, or even LinkedIn. What if you wanted to share files in a local depository where all of your tribe can have access to? Or what if you only wanted to share with certain members of the tribe? Gigatribes allows you to build your community, much like any other social network, but now you’re able to share large files seamlessly and with out problems.

But there is a problem. How is this different from DropBox? Or maybe ZumoBox? Or any other of the hundreds of file sharing sites. In looking at the application itself I didn’t see anything that really stood out to make this the go to community file sharing network out there.

What it’ll come down to is comfort level and ease of use for your needs. DropBox and Zumobox both have mobile apps that give you access to your files on the go. No such app was found for Gigatribes which already puts this network at a disadvantage.

Sure the whole world has by now. Lone tribes on far islands have heard about Twitter. This massively immersive and widely used micro-blogging network has become a staple for both our personal and professional lives. The world seems to still be feeling the “Twitter effect” as industries adapt their existing messages to fit the fast paced world of this social network.

But do you ever feel like you’re being left behind? Perhaps not enough time to get the right message in a timely fashion? Now there’s a solution to that.

Twuffer presents itself as the buffer between you and your timed messages. By using the web application, you are able to preset messages on a timed schedule to be released on your network at the times you think most important. The possibilities of this type of functionality are as endless as your creativity.

The web app is easy to use and can serve you to better time your announcements, set reminders for yourself or others, engage in timed online activities, or, as the site suggests, make it appear as if you never sleep. The practicality of this app seems pretty straightforward.

The application is currently in beta, but your able to explore what it has to offer pretty seamlessly. I suggest you give it a try to announce regular days when your podcast or blog post will go live, or perhaps some other similar campaign to see if Twuffer is right for you!

Often, big stoies are made publicaly aware on Twitter trends before they hit mainstream news. Several times I’ve watched BBC World News when the presenter used Twitter trends as a source.

Now Digg are launching a new trends experiment which will follow in the footsteps of Twitter. However it’s not just a carbon copy.

The trends feature will display stories that people are digging fast but only recently. The idea is to catch big stories in their initial phases before they hit mainstream media.

Here is what the official Digg blog reads about the new experiment:

Today we’re launching a new homepage voting experiment called Digg Trends which will surface certain highly active stories as they’re trending to Digg’s homepage so people can vote on whether or not they feel the story actually belongs there.

How does it work? Digg Trends identifies and highlights upcoming stories that have a high volume of activity (think Diggs, comments, favorites, shares, etc.). When we detect a new trending story, it will appear on the homepage for ten minutes. Based on the Digg and bury activity in those ten minutes the story will either become popular or not. To make it easy to follow the action, we’ve setup a Twitter account to tweet out when a new Digg Trend is up for voting on the homepage. Here’s an example of what a Digg Trend might look like:

The goal of Digg Trends is to put high activity stories in front of the community quickly and to present a fun new way for people to express whether they like the story or not. We only show the most basic information for each story so as to ensure that voting is as unbiased as possible.

Rock, rap, R&B, metal, rave, trance. What ever your taste sometimes talking about music with other fans is really cool. Discussing favourite songs, artists, concerts or the industry news is what music fans do. iLike is a platform that allows you to do just that.

It’s is about to be purchased by the floundering MySpace – perhaps in some desperation to heal their wounds. Anyway, I’ll give you a quick run down on what iLike has to offer.

Firstly, it combines all of the great music facilities into one profile from across loads of different social networks such as Bebo, Hi5 and FaceBook. So instead of flying around all the different social networking sites to discuss music you can simply go to iLike.

They’re also in tune with the music scene with tons of news and song updates. iLike will also detect what city you’re in and inform you of upcoming concerts and festivals in your area.

And, as expected you can get songs their (well, iTunes). On the homepage there are free Mp3 songs from lesser-known artists that you can download for free. They also have popular songs that you can buy.

iLike also has different arrangements with many different singers and bands. For example, at the time of writing this article they were promoting Creed’s upcoming tour. The smaller things include loads of applications for download and cool pictures and videos for your enjoyment.

A great service for the chatty music fan.

Recently there’s been a wave of news regarding brands that have been misrepresented on various social networks for

the purpose of deceiving and sharing misinformation. It has become frustrating for users to determine if a brand is honestly being represented online or managed by someone impersonating said brand. These problems can now be overcome with Verified Pages, which focuses on sharing which brands are online and where their social profiles are.

This site has been a long time coming, and users can now safely connect with the brand of their choice, having comfort that they are not communicating with an impersonator. Brands that have connected with Verified Pages understand the importance of their brands reputation.

If you’re looking to provide end users with the comfort of knowing they are connecting with the real deal, then I highly encourage you to register your brand. If you are someone looking for a specific entity to contact, search the site and find out where you can find them.

I’ve just recently started running for fitness and I had my eye on the Nike+ system to pair with my iTouch. Running is something a lot of us fear, perhaps some of you out there MIGHT enjoy it, but far more prefer other methods of exercise. Still, the Nike+ system is the device that is supposed to have revolutionized running as a sport and as a frequent user of this device, I have to say it’s upped my game, and helped me train harder.

This small device, running $30USD for the sensor, and approx. $75USD for the USB bracelet, sends information to your iPod and tracks your progress monitoring information like pace, distance, time, and calories burned. All the while you are able to run to your own music track and when you’re feeling run down, activate your own power song to push you those extra miles.

To add even more functionality to the device you are able to connect your device to your computer (both MAC and PC compatible) and upload your data to the Nike+ website, adding you to the mix of already thousands upon thousands of runners out there at all levels. You can monitor your progress, join challenges, track milestones, and join in a social network of sorts with other runners out there. It’s useful on so many levels, and allows you to buy Nike specific music tracks that they’ve put together for you, training modules that go further than what comes pre-loaded, accessories and gear, and even create a Nike+ animated character for a badge that can be placed on your own site or your Facebook account.

All in all, I highly recommend this device if you’ve not gotten it yet, and you’re running. Even if you don’t like running with music, that’s fine, leave it off, but keep the stats, once you calibrate it, it’s priceless.

There is no doubt that the market is becoming overrun with social networks. While there is value in a great number of them, after awhile they all starte to look the same. With only slight variations it makes a person wonder why one would be different from the rest if they are all so similar. That being said, the grand-daddy of the social network medium, MySpace, might be on the endangered species list.

It’s no surprise that during an economic crunch that “re-structuring” is inevitable, but recently we’ve seen a large number of the U.S. staff released from the company, and now the wave appears to be hitting Europe. After reading an article on TechCruch it got me thinking if MySpace is even relevant anymore.

It’s become a marketing ground for new bands, comedians, and other entertainers. The playground to the 15 and below crowd, it fails to reach the depth that other social networks like Facebook have reached in recent years. Much like AOL was a pioneer and has slowly been phased out of importance, is the same happening to the social networking pioneer MySpace?

Do you still use MySpace? If so for what? Do you find it relevant in your life, why or why not? I’d love to gauge the readership of Crenk and find out if MySpace is even a blip on the radar in terms of connecting with people.
