As you might already know, link baits are content, tools or webpages specifically created to pull in links and traffic from other websites and popular social media websites like Digg or Reddit.

Creating an effective link bait can take a lot of time and effort and I think initial control over the distribution process is very important. You want someone who has influence or connections to submit or promote your link bait to the social community you are targeting.

This increases the potential for eventual success on many levels. Submitting your link bait using a very weak account on social voting or news sites will not allow you get the prominence you deserve, primarily because there isn’t enough initial support to propel your link bait into the limelight.

However, sometimes even power users might not have the ability to make your link bait go viral. Blame it on the saturated of news, the inherent bias against your domain or the inappropriateness of your article.

There are dozens of reasons why your bait didn’t succeed but trying to pinpoint them definitively is futile, particularly when some of the factors lie outside of your control (e.g. editorial/management prejudice).

Why You Should Resubmit Your Content for Social Media Popularity

Re-submission or re-insertion of link baits and valuable content into the social community gives your website a second chance. Didn’t make it big before? Now you have another shot. Note that there are also some concrete reasons why you should consider resubmission as a promotional strategy:

Correct Weak Submissions. You might have submitted your own linkbait with a new profile that doesn’t have much clout. Or someone else with a small circle of influence might have submitted it before you. Even though your article is awesome, it may still go unnoticed on the social site. Resubmission with a stronger profile is a good way to bring it back from the dead for round two.

Resuscitate Your Archives. Maybe you’ve written great content in the past but never bothered about social media marketing. Your favorite articles might have already been submitted by other users but now that you’re more social media savvy, it’s time to dig out some of the older, timeless articles to give them another go-around on the social sites.

Feed Current Interests. Say you have an old Apple article which intricately explores the history of all their mp3 players. You’ve just found out today that Apple is releasing a next generation iPod with great new features. Pull out your old article, do some edits and resubmit it to ride the social media buzz.

Kickstart a New Domain. If you’ve moved all your articles and content over to a new domain or brand, resubmission is an excellent way to immediately get some attention to your new website. All your permalinks will be different, which will faciliate the resubmission process. This was something I personally realized after completely restructuring my category and permalinks.

Remember, the aim of every linkbait is to bring in links and traffic. Re-submission doesn’t deviate from this principle. Ergo, your content must still be incredibly appealing and link worthy. This must be the number one rule to keep in mind.

You’re essentially giving your article or webpage another chance. You’re asking the social media audience to take another look, because they might find something valuable that was overlooked the first time round.

How to Resubmit Your Content for Social Media Popularity

Take a stroll through your site archives to examine the webpages or articles you have created. Look at the ones that are exceptionally well written or still relevant to the current climate. News-oriented or topical posts will probably not work well with audiences who expect content that is relatively fresh or new.

You can also make minor (or major) edits to the articles you want to re-submit, in order to increase their relevance or attractiveness. This will also legitimize your article, particularly if it received a decent amount of exposure the other time, while failing to eventually develop massive popularity on the specific social site.

Pick some of the articles you like and then submit it to the social news websites through a strong social profile. Submit it yourself or get someone else to do it for you. Some of the social websites block the old url so create a new URL for your linkbait page and 301 redirect the old URL.

And you’re done. Depending on the strength of your article and the influence of the submitter, you will now have a better chance going big on any social website.

More Articles on Effective Social Media Marketing Strategies

This first social media marketing strategy is something that anyone can implement for success. I’ve been meaning to write about resubmissions for a while but haven’t had the chance to do so until now. A special hat tip to Chris Winfield, who reminded me of this method in a conversation we had earlier today.

I’ll be writing a little more on social media marketing and will be providing more tips on how you can better improve your potential for getting traffic, attention and links through the various social media outlets.

Most people know how to use Twitter search by now. You use their unique algorithm to find both profiles based on common interests or locations, or via live feed updates that are being posted as we speak. This has made it a great way to find specific information, especially for following and keeping up to date on certain topics.

When it comes to Twitter, you might not think you can use their search to save money, much less become more environmentally conscious. But you would be wrong; it is easy to use their hashtag system to do just that. That is because it doesn’t just link you with specific groups or businesses. Instead, you find updates that are always changing that use the same topic for interest.

You might be wondering what that means for you. Basically, you will be able to find anyone who might be talking about saving money or living a more sustainable life in that moment. Anyone talking about it anywhere could have a good tip or a link that could benefit you, and you will have the power to see whatever is more recent any time you look.

A few tips aside:

Here’s a great intro into what Twitter hashtags really are (and here’s one more)

Here’s a detailed article on creating and using Twitter RSS feeds for tracking new mentions of any word

Here’s the collection of great social media search tricks (including Twitter tips)

Now, these ten hashtags can be used to save a little cash while create a more self sufficient, sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyle. All with a simple search and follow.

5 For Saving Money

#savings – This hashtag will give you a ton of options for deals which are linked from both personal and company profiles. However, sometimes they can be a little hard to navigate because they use locations to specify the deal. For example, you can find savings in Boston, or in Atlanta. You might want to narrow it down a bit to find what you are looking for.

#frugality – If you are looking for tips on how to save money in your day to day life, you will get a lot of them here. #frugality is a hashtag used by people all over the web to tell about how they managed to save a few dollars, or links to specials they have come across. But mostly, there are ideas such as biking, using phones during certain hours or places to buy items more cheaply second hand.

#deals – This are almost exclusively online deals from companies or websites that are third party for the stores. They provide small explanations of those promotions, with a link out. AmazonDeals commonly uses this hashtag, as does SheSpeaksDeals and others.

#bargains – I have noticed a lot of freebies posted under this Twitter hashtag, which is a plus. Otherwise, it is just a way of expressing excitement for personal account users on getting deals, which can give you a nudge in the right direction. There are also some savings sites that use it to talk about clearance or sales items on online shops.

#coupons – Everyone loves coupons, right? This hashtag will point you to coupons from all over the web, as well as for in-store deals you can print. Sometimes they just send you to linked sales pages from local shops, which shows specials currently being offered. This becomes a much more active hashtag between the months of October – December, especially with Black Friday right around the corner, and predictions popping up everywhere.

5 For A Sustainable Life

#sustainability – Saving resources is an important part of protecting our world. Especially in a time where the natural items given from the Earth are so often exploited, with increasingly dire consequences. #sustainability is all about eliminating waste through better methods of extraction, policies and using what is already available to us before going for something new.

#slowfood – You know all about “fast food” and the problems that come along with it. Now, there is a focus on “slow food”, or that which is gained, made and traded in a more positive way. This assists in both the planet, the people and local economies, and can be equated to fair trade on a very basic level. This hashtag has tweets all about that process, and how you can get involved.

#sustainable – Rather than used alone, this hashtag is usually combined with others that give it context, such as #greenliving, #corporateresponsibility and others. It is similar to the #sustainability hashtag, in that it informs and promotes on the process of more replenishing and responsibly using resource, as well as finding better ways to do things.

#susty – This is a more obscure tag that uses an abbreviation to speak about sustainability. It is usually put in posts by individual users rather than foundations or companies. It is also almost always partnered with other hashtags to generate context and make it easier to share with others.

#sustainableagriculture – Sustainable agriculture is not a new concept, but it is one that it just developing mainstream followers and interest. It is a means or producing and transporting food that is positive for the environment, as well as for the people who consume it. This usually include organic farms, but also anything that is part of a program to deplete hunger on both local and global scales, through distribution. You will also find posts dedicated to proper animal treatment in the agricultural process, as well.

Conclusion

It is interesting how sustainability and money saving go hand in hand. When you make a real effort to reduce the use of resources, you will be reusing or limiting the use of a number of products. This means cash saved for you as your spending goes down, and a positive feeling of helping yourself and others out.

Twitter has made it simpler than ever to share in this process and learn how to do it more effectively. If you are a tweeter, but hashtags do you use toward this purpose? Let us know in the comments, as well as how it has been helping you to change your life.

With more +1′s improving the search ranking of that content.

“We’ve begun to roll out out a set of changes that will make the button render up to 3x faster on your site,” software engineer David Byttow said.

“No action is required on your part, so just sit back, relax, and watch as the button loads more quickly than before.”

This is great news, because the +1 button was loading very slowly compared to other social media buttons, so about time Google sorted it out!

Mixx is a leading social news site that had over 1.1 million unique users per month. It seems as though UberMedia has taken down the site and are giving it a well overdue overhaul.

It seems like UberMedia is gearing up their portfolio with some great brands, Mixx, Popurls, UberMarket and possibly TweetDeck.

However, this now just leaves Reddit as the major and only real player in the social news market.

Zimbra Desktop is a great new email and collaboration tool, which comes in the free or premium model. If you use Zimbra Desktop free you can sync and store all emails, calendar, contacts, etc, in the cloud and access locally. Zimbra Desktop aggregates information across accounts (Zimbra, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) and social networks (Facebook, Digg, Twitter, etc.) to help make communicating & sharing information easier than ever.

Install Zimbra Desktop on Ubuntu

1.First you need to download Linux package from here www.zimbra.com/products/desktop.html

2. Extract the content of the package (*.tar.gz) on your Home, Desktop…right click > Extract here

3. Open a terminal and go where you extract zimbra…for example:

$ cd home//Desktop/zdesktop_2_0_1_b10659_linux_i686/

4. from that path run:

$ sudo ./install.pl

5. It will guide you to the Setup Zimbra Desktop > press (A) to accept terms and conditions

6. If you would, accept the default directori where it install

/opt/zimbra/zdesktop

7. Would you like to continue to install files for user: Root? > Here you may want to answer NO…otherwise you always have to log in Zimbra Desktop as superuser.

8. To install data files run this command (always on the same path: ~//Desktop/zdesktop_2_0_1_b10659_linux_i686/):

$ /opt/zimbra/zdesktop//linux/user-install.pl

9. Now you’ll be asked about where to install files, for example:

Home//.zdesktop

(if you put a dot in front zdesktop, it’ll be hidden (ctrl+h) inside your home folder…)

10. And then you’ll be asked about the path where to locate the icon where you’ll launch Zimbra, for example:

/home//Desktop

11. Press enter and configure your accounts. It is a really usefull, and complete aplication. You have tabs to manage facebook, twitter accounts, calendar, tags…

I would like to introduce everyone to FeedMagnet. FeedMagnet is a great new social media startup that is trying to help leading business to keep up with their social media chat and activity across the web. FeedMagnet already has clients such as AOL, Sundance Channel, Logitech, Kendall-Jackson, WE tv, and many more.

By creating embedded widgets, social press rooms, microsites, and brand fan pages that can be used on the web, displayed at events, or shared via mobile devices, FeedMagnet allows companies to capture the best social content about their brand and integrate social proof into their marketing program.

The Morgans Hotel Group uses FeedMagnet to aggregate content from all of the social sites they manage, trending news stories, and buzz from local events (like Fashion Week) and display it all in an attractive layout that is displayed on iPads in every room. For AutoNation we developed branded screens that pull in everyone talking about (and checking in at) AutoNation’s hundreds of dealerships around the U.S., as well as posts from their own social media team.

FeedMagnet has a lot of unique opportunities for companies looking to control and have more access of their brands on social media sites. Take a look at FeedMagnet and see if their range of services fits in with your needs.

Social media should be inherent to all companies’ marketing campaigns. Consumers have come to expect a presence on social media platforms to as much a degree as they expect to be able to telephone or write in case of a problem. How simple it is to just fire off a quick tweet to a company whilst on the move. And as there will usually be someone monitoring the Twitter account, the person will usually get a timely response. So much quicker than using conventional telephone or postal mail methods.
Cars and Social Media originally appeared on: Crenk

Social media should be inherent to all companies’ marketing campaigns. Consumers have come to expect a presence on social media platforms to as much a degree as they expect to be able to telephone or write in case of a problem. How simple it is to just fire off a quick tweet to a company whilst on the move. And as there will usually be someone monitoring the Twitter account, the person will usually get a timely response. So much quicker than using conventional telephone or postal mail methods.

Whilst complaints and calls for an improvement in service are perhaps the most likely use for social media, it should not always be seen in a negative light. Social media can be a valuable source of feedback and an efficient marketing tool. Take, for example, the success that Ford has seen through its social media marketing campaigns.

Ford’s Fiesta Movement Campaign was, most social media commentators agree, a triumph. On launching its new Fiesta, Ford allowed 100 members of the public the use of the new model to drive, and then review, using social media. This resulted in 700 videos being produced with over 7 million views on Youtube. It could be argued that this will make zero difference to sales figures, however Ford are using this as more of a relationship tool that a strict sales method. It has long been known in marketing circles that the more a consumer interacts with a company the better opinion they have of that company, and word of mouth is one of the more powerful marketing tools. A person is much more likely to listen to a friend if they have had a good experience than if they view an advert that has not been targeted directly at them.

‘Ninety percent of social media is just showing up’ says Scott Monty, Global Digital Communications for the Ford Motor Company. Indeed, Ford has shown up. They showed up relatively early. A large part of their success through the medium can be attributed to not only having this presence but actually having someone respond to queries through the medium in what people would consider a ‘reasonable time’. In addition, senior executives from the company have been taking part in online question and answer sessions over Twitter, another move to bring them closer to their consumer base.

Ford describe their strategy is ‘to humanize the company by connecting consumers with Ford employees and with each other when possible, providing value in the process’, another example of keeping close to the consumer. The importance of this is paramount; the average company’s awareness of social media will usually be restricted to Facebook and Twitter. These are the most popular services but a company, as in Ford’s case, should look to others such as Flickr, Delicious, Foursquare, the list goes on. Keeping on top of trends ensures longevity.

Consumers will be talking about your company, both in a good and bad light. A company needs to have a social media presence; otherwise the voice of the company comes from its customers.

It was rumoured that Twitter has received a $450 million investment from JP Morgan Chase for a 10% share of their company. It turns out that Twitter co-founder Biz Stone is denying the rumours.

Stone told Reuters that the reports were “made up”, but did admit to discussions with Facebook “a couple of years ago … (but) nothing formal since and it’s mostly rumors all the time”.

JP Morgan is in the market for investing in social media startups, because recently they raised a $1.22 billion fund to do just that. There isnt an investment in Twitter at the moment, but it would make sense for JP Morgan to invest very soon. biz stone

Social Media and Twitter icons are probably the most used in blogs and web sites, here we provide for all you two links for a very neat set of icons in an original black design.

The social media icons are provided by BlackSmith and you can find for Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, YouTube, digg, Reddit, Delicious, etc. Download the entire set from here.

And the black set for Twitter, provided by iconhive, is definitely my favorite ones; which are available for Windows and Mac. Download from here for the Windows version; and this link for Mac.

Dan Zarella is, as the blog says it, the social media scientist; and created a very interesting tool: “Most ReTweetable Words Finder” given a keyword, shows the most retweetable words.

The use is quite simple as well: enter a keyword and click analyze. The tool will return a list of words that were found to be related to that word and highly ReTweetable. It will also display the number of Tweets and ReTweets analyzed to generate the list. Here’s an example of “Microsoft” keyword:

We can find some words like “kinect”, “gaming”, “camera”, “ironruby” or even “fetish” (?).

The tool compares words found in ReTweets against non-ReTweet Tweets. Using the last 24hours, the tool analyzes up to 1500 Tweets and 1500 ReTweets per word.

If you are interested in retweeats, Dan created a report: “The Science of ReTweets”

The Flock browser allowed for many unique plug-ins very similar to Firefox, thus offering a seamless user interactive experience with the added bonus of social networking.

This week a huge announcement was made that Flock was leaving the Firefox backbone and moving to Chrome. Touted as a social browser there is definitely something to love about it, but does it really know where it wants to go? The interface has undergone a drastic overhaul moving away from the complex menus and tabs and moving more towards a simple interface with fully customizable group and friend options.

In a world where social platforms like Tweetdeck, Seesmic, and Hootsuite have been integrated into desktops and/or browsers, it feels like Flock is still running too many steps behind. Has Flock lost its luster? Perhaps, but there’s nothing wrong with reinventing yourself.

Those unfamiliar with Foursquare, it’s a geo-locating application that pinpoints your location and notifies the Foursquare community and your social networks where you are. For example if you’re at the local grocery store, you can Foursquare it, users earn points that translate into badges depending on how often and where you check-in, and ultimately people are able to see the types of places you like to visit. On the other hand, it’s made cyber stalking that much easier.

A recent site called PleaseRobMe.com has highlighted the risk of sharing your locations for the most paranoid of the bunch. It stands to reason that anyone can know anything about you if they really wanted to, with or without Foursquare. Though the site appears to be a joke, the seriousness in which someone’s property could truly be in jeopardy is something that is not easily overlooked.

Illegal? Does this site incite people to do harm to another? Some say that if you choose to share your location you deserve what happens, but that seems a very narrow minded point of view.

So tell me, where do you stand? Do you use geo-locating services? Do sites like PleaseRobMe.com exist as a wake up call or as a way to incite theft?

For those of us who are heavy Twitter users, we can remember the day when we signed up for an account and were offered suggestions of people to follow. Typically that list featured heavy hitter news agencies, a number of celebrities of varying backgrounds, and perhaps some large tech companies or sites. Chances are a few of these interested us, but for the vast majority it meant very little. Online networking has transcended more into a place for relevant conversation with people we feel we have common bonds with, rather than just a chat forum of open ended conversations. While others may comment in the public stream or friends us based on who we have friended, more of us are looking for real conversations as opposed to connecting with the likes of Ashton Kutcher who more than likely does not respond to his 1 million plus fans.

How do you follow people on Twitter?

So you can imagine it was interesting when I read an article on CNN from founder of Mashable, Pete Cashmore, on this very topic. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Pete at a variety of tech events, and a celebrity in his own right, is naturally a down to earth guy. Nevertheless, the article he wrote discusses how Twitter has altered the focus on specific celebrities and news agencies in their suggestion methods and now offers up categorized lists based on general interests.

Does this work any better?

Pete Cashmore seems to think it’s a step in the right direction. I’m inclined to agree, but I still feel like the suggestions are not people I would communicate with on a regular basis. More than likely I’m going to seek out local thought leaders and conversation instigators. Why should third party developers be the ones I turn to for niche suggestions, I think Twitter could be of great service if they did that from the start. Many new Twitter users are not typically well versed in the world of social networking, so third party developers are foreign to them. They make not seek out the latest Twi-(put your own ending, everyone else is) that can help them find specific people. Their only base of reference will be the suggestion lists.

So yes it’s a good first step, but perhaps more can be done. Pete Cashmore states that celebrities might see their follower numbers start to slow down due to this categorizing done by Twitter, and perhaps they will. Ultimately if people want to follow celebrities they will seek them out anyways. Personally, as much as I love celebrities, I’m looking to connect with real people that I can carry real conversations with.

What are your thoughts?

There are two sides, one for the user, and the benefits for the business, and when working hand in hand, create an extremely positive relationship. Foursquare allows users to check-in where they are at and race with other local users to become “Mayor” of their location. Based on mobile devices it makes it easy to move around town and check-in as you go.

Most recently users have been looking for a rich desktop experience, something that Foursquare does not offer on their site. They offer options to change settings and such, but not a way to claim your location. Now that has changed thanks to a small development company that’s created FoursquareX. The desktop application, for Mac only, is an OSX based application that allows you to check-in but also allows you to see where your friends are based on an interactive map. Reading deeper into the way this application works, users will be happy to know that it offers the following beneficial features:

app runs in the background, sending you notifications when updates and check-ins are made

appears to use a Google map app and overlays your friends icons to show their location

if you’re looking to meet new people, you’ll be notified when people check-in whether you know them or not, giving you the chance to say “hi”.

Take a look if you’re a Foursquare fan and let us know what you think. So far I’m happy with it, and hope to see some type of port to the actual Foursquare app on the mobile because I can see this becoming a fully functional aspect of the mobile app.

One million posts a day you say? Very possible now that Seesmic has acquired Ping.fm. Personally it was a shock, I’m not privy to Silicon Valley chatter, but I think for most Seesmic Desktop users, this will offer a bevy of updating options. At last count there were over 50 sites that Ping.fm updated, and now Seesmic Desktop will harness this power. But this is just the top of iceberg. With some further API development and plug-in updates, this positions Seesmic closer to their goal of one million posts a day for 2010.

A huge congrats goes out to Loic Le Meur who not only acquired the application, but also the founding talent behind it, Adam Duffy and Sean McCollough who are now joining the Seesmic team full time. With talent like this in an already powerful application any other future goals seem like a no brainer when it comes to possibility of achieving. According to TechCrunch, Ping.fm boasts approximately 500,000 users with approximately 200,000 updates a day.

I’m interested to see how this plays out in the battle for social media supremacy. Currently Tweetdeck, which seemed to vie for the position of social media go-to app, will be left in the dust once Seesmic integrates the updating power of Ping.fm. Currently Tweetdeck updates, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and LinkedIn, a far cry from the 50 that Ping.fm reaches. Personally I’m a Tweetdeck user, but this acquisition could make me change my desktop app of choice.

Search is has been a big topic of discussion in 2009, and in 2010 is almost assuredly going to be a bigger deal as users look for ways to distill the internet’s wealth of information to more personal discoveries. Recently, with the surge of social networking, search has become an even more contested topic because the content created by the millions of users worldwide is not just prolific, but is being done daily. Real time search through your networks and contacts postings can be useful to discover what the pulse of your network really is. Unfortunately small steps have been made in this area, and as much as Search.Twitter.com is used, it’s still not giving you a personal search, but rather having you search the entire Twitter network.

One of the few personal Twitter searches is flocking.me. If you’ve got several hundred or several thousand friends in your network, you can erase the noise and focus on only the groups you want, for specific information. This is ideal if your’e looking for trends, industry news, or just looking to see what topics your friends think are hot button issues that you’d like to join in on. An interesting addition to this app is the ability to search your tweets via an interactive map. The map shows the location of the Tweeters and gives you a better understanding of the scope and range of your conversations as you span the globe seeing your search information pop up.

An added bonus is the ability to update your status straight from the site. Much like the Twitter homepage of old, you’ll need to refresh the page to see any of the updates on your profile or those that you’ve done a search for. While the concept is nice, I’m not sure how portable this application is. Mobility is key as we are all on the goal, so I’d like to see this concept put into a mobile app. There are a few out there that offer similar functionality, but nothing that I’ve seen with personal search like flocking.me.

Perhaps the most famous (and notorious for crashing websites) is Digg.com – launched a few years back with funding of just $40 million and is now the world’s leading social media promotion website. That is of course, if you only look at sites aiming to promote content alone.

Twitter on the other hand has become a social media promotion tool and a social network – a devilish combination. Because of this, Twitter passed Digg’s traffic rating back in March and is continuing to climb despite periods of stagnation in terms of traffic. Digg however, is falling. Since September, a 15% drop in traffic is indicated by the ComScore graph above and we haven’t even seen the results for December yet.

As the war between Facebook and Twitter calms down could we be now seeing Digg trying to take on Twitter in a no-holds-barred?
