It’s earliest form was accessed using primitive mobiles using GPRS. Early Blackberries at the turn of the millennium played their part in increasing its popularity and relevance. Still however, the computer remained the best way to access the web. However, since the iPhone revolutionised the way we think about mobile web, its usage has more than doubled in one year.

2009 saw an increase of more than 110% in mobile web usage. This is undoubtedly due to the rush of smart phones onto the market such as the iPhone, Android devices and new Blackberries. Apple dominates each continental market except for Africa where cheaper GPRS phones still rule. In fact, Apple had a 65% share of the market at the end of 2009 with their iPhone and iPod Touch.

Android is the number two player in the US and has been growing in dominance since late 2008 when they launched on HTC phones. Towards the end of 2009, Android also seen a spike when their Motorola devices went on sale. They currently have around 12% of the North American market.

2010 may see the mobile web take off as Google prepare to launch their own smart phone and the scramble for consumers to get more up to date phones begins as the world climbs out of recession.

Well it seems like it most definitely has – thanks to search.

Google reported the first rise in advertising revenue in over two quarters. The third quarter of 2009 stabilized the sector. However, as I mentioned above it was all due to the advertisements in the search results pages not so much the advertisements on websites.

While this is good news it’ll still be a while until the other advertisers such as AOL, Yahoo! and Microsoft recover from the recession – these being the weakest of the search engines.

So it appears that the advertisements on web pages still aren’t doing as good as what they used to simply because there are less ‘big’ companies using them. As such, people don’t want to click on them. Crenk’s advice for bloggers and webmasters? Use Google AdSence to put advertisements on your website’s search page!

With the US economy and the world economy as a whole in shambles, no one appears to be safe from the downtown. Stock prices have dropped drastically, especially in the tech world. Those who were hanging their hats on their stock options are now facing the harsh reality that right now their piece of the pie is almost valueless.

Just recently Seesmic released just over one-third of their employees, with three more having been let go the week before. While they are not experiencing the “crash and burn” they are preparing for a bleak fundraising future. The founder of Seesmic, Loic Le Meur, cut out anything that “wasn’t outsourceable, core or absolutely necessary for the company.”

It was also reported just recently on Robert Scoble’s site that he too was going through his own professional with having a brand new boss, and having 20 of his co-workers laid off due to the economic troubles that have begun to trickle down into their offices.

You can follow his discussions on the situation on his Twitter account and also find it his FriendFeed account.

Just the tip of the iceberg? Everyone is feeling the pinch during these times. You can read more about the effects of the economic downturn here.
