Raptr is like all the Instant messaging services you use combined into 1 program. It allows you to connect to facebook, xbox, psn, and many more. Although it does not work with skype :( which I am pretty bummed about because if it did support skype I would probably uninstall skype. It also supports ingame chat which I have not tried out yet though and it also checks what games you have installed and when you play that game it will show you as playing it which is kinda cool. Each game also has its own page like a Facebook page that you can like and write on.All in all it is a good program to have if you have alot of different Instant messaging services.

XbList is a little program that sits in your tray or pinned on you screen that shows you what friends are online and what they are playing. It also supports popup notifications that you can set. You could have a notification every time someone goes online or offline or every time they change games.It is a good program if you like to know who is on Xbox live and who isn’t.The only bad part about this program is that you must login with IE first and that sometimes there is a delay of like 10 seconds but nothing major.

Give Away Of The Day is a website that everyday has one free program to give away. It could be anything from audio converters to security software. Each program is avaible for free for only 1 day or 24 hours. The only bad part about this is you also have to install it within those 24 hours or it will not be free. Sometime they will ofter a program for free for more then one day or offer 2 programs one day but this is really rare. You can also submit your program to go on their site. Nerrot is a simple bit torrent searcher that finds the torrent you are looking for. Nerrot is like a Google I’m feeling lucky search. You simply type in the name of what you are looking for and it will popup a download almost instantly. Nerrot though does not have any other features so it is pretty simple as you can see from the above screen shot. Also although the searches are most of the time rite there is no way of detecting if a torrent is fake because there are no comments. I recommend this to people who are just looking to download torrent really quick.

BitLet  runs in java so there is no extra installing needed.This is also good if you don’t want to install a torrent client on your computer. Also it supports video streaming so you can download a torrent that is a video and have it stream. They also show you your upload and download speed and even how many seeders and leachers. Most of the time the torrents will work but not always. I would recommend this to users who rarely download torrents and also to people who need to download a torrent but don’t have the time or want to install a client.. If you download  torrents often then i would stick with whatever client you have.

]]> Thanks to a new virus which makes users believe all of their data has been deleted, computer users everywhere are in mass panic and repair shops are busier than ever. This new virus is pure genius and is, as old-school hackers would put it, a “truly righteous” hack. It exploits a loophole in Java which gives the virus god-rights on the computer and installs without the user ever knowing. Unlike most viruses today which trick the user into thinking they have a virus and clicking ‘OK’ to clean it up (which actually installs it), it is embedded in webpages which use Java and installs silently. And since nearly everyone has Java turned on to surf the internet, it installs quietly and effortlessly. Suddenly, all the computer’s files, icons and folders are “gone.” Panic ensues as users frantically try to figure out how to recover their “lost” data. But what has really happened is that the virus has simply hidden every file on the computer! Genius, right? I can only imagine the developers are sitting back having a good laugh about it all.

So what do you do if you get hit by this lovely virus? A non-techy person could take it to a computer repair shop and spend anywhere from $85-$150 to get it fixed. Or for you geeks, you could fix it yourself using the following steps:

(Please note the following steps are for experienced users only – if you are not comfortable performing any of the below steps, take the computer to a professional!)

1)      Immediately boot into Safe Mode (with networking) and do not leave this until you are done! (Mashing F8 at the boot screen will do this on most computers – read the boot screen if F8 doesn’t do the trick)

  1. If you have to reboot at any time, make sure you boot back into Safe Mode!

2)      Download and run RKill: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill. This will terminate the virus from running and allow you to clean up the computer. Any of the download links should work – they just have various names to confuse viruses.

3)      You need to be able to see the folders/files which are hidden. To do this, do the following:

  1. Click your start menu
  2. In the ‘run’ field, type “cmd” and hit enter
  3. Type: c:*.* /d /s –h
  • **The virus may make files read-only as well. If so, include –r.
  • **If the virus makes files system files, add –s.
  • Do NOT add any unnecessary –r or –s commands. Only use these commands if needed.

4)      Make sure you have the following programs installed and updated:

  1. Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/)
  2. Super AntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com)
  3. Remove ANY other antivirus program you have as most don’t live up to their promises and often do more harm than good (ESPECIALLY Norton, McAfee and AVG).

5)      Run a FULL scan on both Security Essentials and Super AntiSpyware.

6)      Clean up your registry! (If not comfortable with this, pay for a professional cleanup!)

  1. Go to Start –>Run–>’regedit’ and hit enter, then ‘Ok’ or ‘Yes’
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER–>Software–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
    i.      Remove anything which looks suspicious and is not a file you recognize. For instance, an entry with a name like FKA546542EJJAL and stored in a temp file is probably a virus (EXAMPLE ONLY). This is also a good time to remove unnecessary programs from starting up at boot time.
  3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER–>Software–>Microsoft–>WindowsNT–>CurrentVersion–>Winlogon
    i.      Again, remove anything suspicious. If you don’t see anything obvious, DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING.
  4. Go to HKEY_USERS–>’user name’ or ‘.DEFAULT’–> Software–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
    i.      Remove suspicious files as mentioned above
    ii.      Do this for EVERY user
  5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE–>SOFTWARE–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
    i.      Remove suspicious files (be EXTRA careful here as some of these files are necessary for system files to run at startup. Again, if not sure, take it in for a professional cleanup!)
  6. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE–>SOFTWARE–>Microsoft–>WindowsNT–>CurrentVersion–>WinLogon
    i.      Double click on ‘Shell’ and make sure it ONLY says ‘explorer.exe’. If there is anything after it, delete it!
    ii.      Double click on Userinit and make sure it ONLY says ‘C:Windowssystem32userinit.exe,”. If there is anything after it, delete it!

7)      Lastly, do a quick file cleanup

  1. Go to C:WindowsSystem32
    i. Sort by Date Modified – click twice so you see the most recent date on top
    ii. Going from the date you got infected (hopefully you are doing this the same day or the next day) remove any files which look suspicious (yet again, if you don’t know what you are doing, take it to a professional!)
  2. Go to C:Windows and do as above but look at folders as well as files
  3. Delete cookies and temp files (any self-respecting geek knows how to do this already)

So by now you have:

1)      Made your files viewable and usable again

2)      Removed the virus and any associated viruses or malware through using the recommended software

3)      Removed registry entries to prevent anything bad from loading on startup and thus re-infecting your machine

4)      Removed any negative system entries which may also be contributing to the problem.

You might have even discovered you had other spyware, malware or viruses you didn’t know about throughout all this. But if you did everything correctly, you should be clean. If not, now is definitely a good time to take the computer in for a professional cleanup as your machine likely has bigger problems than you were aware of. Good luck!

**Please note that running these commands will make EVERY file on the system viewable and editable, including previously hidden system files you shouldn’t mess with. Use extreme caution when working with files after doing this. If you aren’t comfortable with this, consider paying for a professional cleanup.

Hotdog Movies is a great movies directory. Unlike Watch Movies Links you arent able to watch the movies directly on Hotdog Movies, instead they direct you to the leading sources so you have a choice of where to watch the movie. We all know that most of these sites arent completely legal, but Hotdog movies is trying to provide links they are legal and can be watched anytime and without having to download any annoying software.

]]> Four days ago we shared the Google TV YouTube video of the service introduction. It’s a big leap for the company who is now focused on not just getting our eyeballs on the computer, but also on our TV’s. The service will apparently be integrated in some models of TV, but for those that dont’ have that option, set top boxes will be released to get help you get your Google on.

It hasn’t even been a full week since we shared this announcement and already Logitech, known for making some amazing technology devices, most notably speakers, headsets, keyboards, and mice, has stepped into the set top box arena. Last week they announced their Google TV Box which will connect your TV to the world of Google. No price yet, but you can bet that the value will be priceless, that is, if you’re a Google fan.

The box is based on the Android platform and runs the Chrome browser. Bringing full search to your TV will hopefully create a seamless experience with your existing paid TV subscriptions. Google TV Box will run on an Intel Atom processor that will integrate with any HDTV and pre-existing set top box (TiVO?), and also come paired with a keyboard, a remote, and touchpad.

This could be a slap to the face of the Apple TV which has not seen a lot of traction since its release. Perhaps it was just an experiment, but Google has jumped on this opportunity to truly create a seamless transition between laptops/desktops and the television in your living room. It will be interesting to see how much this Google TV concept is adopted into our daily lives. What are your thoughts?

Hi5 have just acquired the gaming company ‘Big Six’ in order to flesh out the gaming sector of their website, a popular social network. Hi5 has been up an running for quite a few years now. Although it has never really taken off in Europe it is big in the US and is following the lead of others such as Facebook in terms of integrating gaming into their network.

As of now, 15% of their revenue comes from gaming by its users so I guess it makes sense to buy up a popular games developer in order to give the feature a shot of adrenaline. But they’ll have some stiff competition as the likes of FarmVille on Facebook have millions of active players.

An emphasis will also be put on developing the social network’s currency further to encourage people to spend their money there rather than on other networks.

“We are excited to be joining a company that shares our philosophy and vision for how social gaming will evolve,” said Kevin Gliner, co-founder and CEO, Big Six. “This deal is a perfect match because it enables us to accelerate our go-to-market plans by leveraging hi5’s huge global audience.”

This website doesn’t give you the option of downloading stuff but only watch it on the website’s online player. You get a long list of movies and dramas that you can choose and watch from. Movies and dramas have a small description about them so that get a hang of the movie or drama before you watch. You have options of watching movies and dramas of various languages like Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese.

3. My Soju

My Soju provides you with links to watch Korean , Japanese and Taiwanese movies and dramas online for free. This website also does not allow you to download movies but only watch them online on the website’s player. Movies and dramas on this website are rated on a five star basis that helps you choose the drama or movie you want to see better. A short synopsis is also given for every movie and drama available on the website.

4. Youku

Youku is the China’s first video website. It offers a wide range of videos and media to choose from like music, Tv shows, reality shows, movies, news and lots more for free. Its more of a video sharing website. The website is in Chinese but you can Google’s translator to translate the website. This is an excellent website to visit and view all kind of Chinese videos.

5. Kung Fu Flicks

Kung Fu Flicks dedicates itself to offer only Kung Fu movies. It gives you an A-Z list of Kung Fu movies to choose and watch from for free. A short description of every movie is also provided to know more about the movie before you watch it. The movies are updated frequently and the site is very neatly laid out. The website allows you to watch the movies on its online web player and does not let you download it.

The idea is to take out the middleman, publishers, and put your work in your hands by giving you the options you need to get your work out to the world. But it’s not just for writers, opportunities are abound for photographers as well who want to feature their work in magazine or calendar format.

Lulu has offered self publishing opportunities for all of us for many years now, and since its launch, has expanded it’s offerings. Take your work in one of many formats, books, ebooks, calendars, photo books, cookbooks, cd’s and dvd’s. Lulu also offers distribution services to get your book out in as many markets as possible, and the fees are minimal compared to what you’d get having to work with an agent and a publisher. I don’t want to take anything away from the traditional models that exist for publishing, they definitely have a place in the world of content publishing, but self publishing offers us so many new opportunities.

At the pro level there are many great options you have, should you choose to go this route, that mimics what working with a real publisher is like. Services include publishing packages, retail listings, children’s book packages, and all inclusive packages. Each of them come with their own distinct professional connections that as a self publisher allows you to truly get a hands on the process of getting your book out to the masses.

]]> Exercising and technology have merged and now tracking your fitness levels has never been easier. As we approach a new year, many of us are already planning those gym memberships and in awe over dreams of losing weight. There’s nothing wrong with that, but sometimes we need a motivator, something to encourage us. Nike+ was an excellent introduction and pairing itself with Apple forged a relationship between two of the most recognized brands in the world. Nike+ has cornered the market in min-tracking devices for your exercising habits, but perhaps their days have been numbered by a new Adidas product.

Adidas miCoach more advanced than Nike+?

Adidas has introduced their new miCoach ($70-$140) to an unsuspecting exercise crowd. The problem with Nike+ is that it was only functional with Apple products, and there are still many people who don’t like being tied down to proprietary hardware, so the miCoach definitely has a market to attract.

The miCoach offers “an audio feedback box, heart rate monitor, and stride sensor — or the MiCoach Zone — which pairs the heart rate sensor with a visual feedback wristband — to receive color-coded workout guidance that tells you when to speed up, slow down, hold steady, or end your workout,” according to the site. It also goes on to say that it’s a more advanced system then the Nike+. I’m not a miCoach owner, but I am a Nike+ owner and so far it’s has served it’s purpose for me, but I’m interested in seeing how the matching color-coded bracelet would change my workouts if I knew when to speed up my workouts and when to slow down.

]]> If you had a chance to update your apps today then perhaps you were surprised by an update for  your Linkedin mobile app. The buzz across the media sites is Linkedin’s new shiny app that offers 100% more functionality than the prior version of the app did. For all purposes the prior version was useless. The limited functionality made it one of those apps you had because you hoped, but you just never used. Luckily, following Facebook’s recent app update, the new Linkedin app gives users more of what they want with a few interesting extras.

The layout you might recognize from the Facebook app. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was their inspiration. I wouldn’t necessarily go out and call them copiers, only because with a mobile app there is only so much you can do, and if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Still, the similarity might work in its favor because users will be comfortable with the layout. What separates the old and new is the increased functions of being able to view and answer inbox messages, invite and accept others invitations, browse profiles, search profiles, and most importantly a new additions.

The new addition is the ability to connect with users in your immediate area using your iPhone. The “In Person” selection makes your iPhone a homing device for others in your area how are Linkedin users and whom you might want to connect with. A great piece of functionality for conferences and other large gatherings where you can exchange business cards, but not all cards come with a Linkedin profile attached. I used this from my apartment, and it picked up on a few people nearby. I’m not quite sure on the range, but it seems a pretty worthwhile addition to the lineup.

Screen casting has been an extremely popular way to explain something to someone using desktop visuals and such to relay the message. The type of cam you’re using is irrelevant since screen casting actually takes place internally with regards to what you see on your own screen.

ScreenToaster brings to live the one button press, much like Screen Jelly does, but what is unique about ScreenToaster is that you can also upload directly to YouTube, which other screen casting tools have not allowed you to do. While saving your video is important being offered ways that users will interact with them is key.

Screentoaster allows you to rerecord audio only if you feel like the audio you hae just didn’t cut it. Being able to choose your microphone source and other intricate choices in the tools will eventually make their way into other web apps for screen casting, but for now Screentoaster is definitely ahead of the game.

There’s a lot of apps out there, both mobile and desktop, that use the Twitter API to make it more “functional” for power users. What’s a power user? Well if you’ve got more than one account on Twitter, have over 1000 friends, and like to have your posts link to other social networks where you have a community, then you are probably a power user.

In the race to be the most dominant desktop application for Twitter, TweetDeck is definitely one of the leading contenders. Having been around for about a year, TweetDeck has taken the Twitter experience to a whole new level. It’s integrating the use of multiple columns, and attaching itself to URL shorteners, photo posting apps like Twitpic, and the ability link to other network like Facebook, all under one app. But just recently TweetDeck has evolved again, and this time, making it even more useful for power users to extend their reach further into the social web.

Last week TweetDeck released an update that now allows you to link your messages to LinkedIn and MySpace, the option to Retweet the way you want, locating your friends, and the ability to integrate Twitter lists into your columns. If there ever was a center to the social universe, TweetDeck could very easily take that spot.

With content accessible on our mobile, it’s become more common for us to be productive with our mobile devices to get more work done. Cell phones and other mobile devices have become the digital leashes that collar us to work, but at the same time it also keeps us connected to life’s information flow. As we become a more connected community via social media tools, it’s always useful to hear how others have made it work for them.

Recently I was stuck on a prolonged trip where I could have done one of two things, sit and just let time pass, or find an effective way to keep what I do going. I opted for the latter and as a writer for various websites across the web, I found the magic combination that keeps what I do going even if I’m not on my laptop or desktop.

For starters I have a iPhone and I’ve set up my apps in such a way that I can now more easily stream line the writing process using apps that I’ve linked together because of how they work together. If there’s a Blackberry alternative out there, I’d love to hear how you keep your brand running even if you’re on the go.

Documents2: Is the app I use to write my article. I use this article specifically because when I write I can back up automatically to my Google Docs and send a copy via email if I choose, all without leaving the app. This makes backing up my work easy.

Safari: I use Safari to quickly grab a creative commons photo from Flickr or any other photo site. I save the photo to the device and make sure that I get all relevant information for attribution purposes.

PS Mobile: This free Photoshop tool is great for quick edits to photos like resizing or cropping on the go. I don’t look for this tool to do anything more than I know it’s capable of and save the photo and move on.

WordPress: Using the WordPress app I bring in my copy, insert photos, include attribution, and tag and label my post accordingly. With a press of the button my articles are posted and I move on to my next task.

The above process may seem like it take a lot of moving around from one app to another, and I admit at first it did take more time than I would have liked. But after making this part of your routine, you become faster at it, and grouping icons by purpose instead of type, like most people do, you can easily access your tools to ensure that your posts are published.

]]> apollo logo As a writer and blogger, I often need to share files with clients and many times just my friends to get feedback on things. It could be a new guide I’ve written or a new design for my blog. A new tool I’ve found makes that a lot easier. It’s called Apollo. It allows you to upload a document and share it with people.

They can then add notes and feedback to the document using the simple ‘note tool’ which involves you just clicking on where you want to add your feedback on the document.

The thing I liked most about Apollo was how you can select exactly where on the document you want to add the note instead of describing it to the other person.

The interface is very easy-to-use and has only the basic tools you need to give or receive feedback. To but it bluntly, there’s no excess fat to get in the way.

To sum up, this is a great web app for freelancers and large companies alike. It streamlines what used to be a very tedious process involving countless e-mails between all those involved.
