Why did the company take away the convenience of being able to watch a movie on the same player used for playing games? Gaming site Kotaku quoted Nintendo president Satoru Iwata:

“The reason for that is we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”

Nintendo will soon be slashing the price of the original Wii, so it can sell more consoles leading up to its new console which will be launched at E3 conference in Los Angeles in June.

So what will it be called? Wii 2? Wii HD?

Nintendo have already been showing off the new system to third party developers, so they can get all their kickass games ready for late 2012.

Nintendo stated that Netflix would be heading to the Nintendo 3DS late in the summers. Additionally, the team behind Super Mario Galaxy would be creating a new game specifically for the glasses free Nintendo 3DS.

It turned out that at the same time Nintendo were announcing their 3DS additions, Apple were launching the iPad 2 across the street. Nintendo president closed his keynote speach with a direct shot at the App Store.

“The objectives of smartphones and social network platforms are not at all like ours,” he said. “For them, content is something created by someone else. Their goal is just to gather as much software as possible because quantity is what makes the money flow. Quantity is how they profit. The value of video game software does not matter to them.”

“Is making high-value games a top priority, or not?” he asked the assembled crowd of game developers.

Nintendo have just launched their Nintendo 3DS in Japan this morning and they have already sold over 400,000 units (stockpile and pre-orders). Some reports are mentioning that over 2,000 people were lining up outside of stores. Currently, Nintendo are selling the 3DS for ¥25,000 and its scheduled to launch in the US on March 27th for $349 and is backward-compatible with previous Nintendo DS games including DSi games.

I find it quite surprising to see that the 3DS has had this much of an impact so far. Will it also sell well in the UK and USA?

The NES hard drives come a variety of sizes up to 1TB, now that’s a lot of storage. The NES cartridges come some some classic flavors such as Mario/Duckhunt, Metroid, Bionic Commando, Contra, Tetris, and Dr. Mario to name a few. The storage devices are built into the original casings for these games with game imagery and all. They feature a 2.5-inch Toshiba drive with USB interfaces.

NES hard drives range in price from $130 – $180, depending on the size. Their nondescript look will wow your friends who won’t expect the classics of yesterday to be used as storage devices today. As a fan of the old NES system seeing these cartridges again brings back memories of late night gaming and trading games with friends.

With Kinect and PlayStation move projects, the gaming market introduces body motion into highly developed games; but companies completely forgotten our classic games. Why we cannot think in a world where we do not need joysticks for games Galaga, Contra or 1942?

This invention takes NES version of Mario Bros 2, and the development seems awkward but I definitely want to try it. Take a look to the video:

The moving sensor we can place in our face captured every movement we make up, down, left or right; and translate those directly to the gaming console.

It’s really hard picture myself playing this game with my eyes. Fighting bosses will be extremely hard in these conditions.

Now, it can’t go without saying that Nintendo has released so many iterations of it’s hand held system that many are hesitant to pick up new devices knowing that another is sure to follow. Still, that being said, fanboys are fanboys and the Nintendo 3DS is an experience that many of us are excited to explore.

The Nintendo 3DS will come with a 3-D capable top and bottom 3.5 inch screen, a motion sensor, gyro, an analog nub, and three cameras. The system also has some premier titles attached including Kid Icarus, Mario Kart, Ridge Racer, and Kingdom Hearts. No special glasses are required to play on the system, and Nintendo is confident that the new system will be the future of gaming, at least in the mobile space.

What are your thoughts on the 3DS? Is Nintendo pushing too hard with  yet another iteration of hit’s mobile system or is it something you welcome and wait for with anticipation?

Well get ready to throw that trip down memory lane upside down with a hack that most of us, I’m sure, will try. Now note that I said “hack” and not all hacks are necessarily legal, but it’s proof positive that this unique crossover is a labor of love and homage to the classic games.

Legal stuff aside, the Super Mario Bros. Crossover was created by a company called Exploding Rabbit and took approximately a year to perfect. The game is the original Super Mario Bros. game integrated with some very popular characters like Link (Legend of Zelda), Bill (Contra), Simon (Castlevania), Mega Man, Samus (Metroid), and the traditional standby Mario.

All of the characters have signature moves based on the moves that Mario has in the original game. Link uses his sword to break bricks and kill enemies, Bill from Contra uses his gun, Simon uses his whip for the same purpose, so the game is giving a unique spin with each of these weapons. If you’re a fan of the music, then note that when you select to play with a certain character the game’s music changes to match the series from which the character came. Now that’s some serious love and attention.

But what happens when you just want to hold a solid controller in your hands?

The long Wii controller is awkward when playing games like Mario or any other platformer, so Nintendo finally decides to change the formula with their own controller design. No longer leaving controller design to third party developers, Nintendo introduces the Wii Classic Controller Pro. Updating itself from the original design, the new Pro controller offers double trigger button to offer more options to the left and right of the controller. Taking the model of the Playstation controller, this new design has rubberized bottom grips for a more sturdy grip.

This new accessory will retail for $20 and is expected to be released in April.

Wii Classic Controller Pro is an upgrade to the previous classic controller design.

Could Apple's new device be the casual gaming machine Nintendo fears?

Many of us have been waiting for Apple’s big announcement with more anticipation than I’ve seen collectively in a very long time. I can remember when the iPhone was first rumored that the world waited, breath held, and excitement at an all time high. I can’t say that any other company has truly fascinated the world as much as Apple has in the last ten years, but then again, very few companies have changed the way we interact the way Apple has. From the launch of the iPod, to the launch of the iPhone, and even dating as far back as their initial Apple computer, the company is known to make waves.

As we approach the big announcement date, the word on everyone’s mind is tablet. I can’t imagine that anyone has not heard the rumors, but this coming Wednesday, along with some other announcements, the world is waiting for the announcement on what they see as the iTablet. Will happen? Does it exist. I’m not here to neither confirm nor deny what’s happening, I’m not privy to that information. But what I will do is make an assumption that I think is at least 85% true.

Should an iTablet of sorts arrive, I’m looking at a device that is purely a media consumption device. I don’t see any content being created with this device, but more for entertainment purposes. While the device will more than likely play movies and audio, it’s being said it could also function as an e-reader. But what I’m looking at is the gaming value.

There have been numerous sources stating that games would play a big factor in this new device and if so why, to what end? Currently the mobile gaming industry throne is held by Nintendo. Since the release of its Gameboy, which was a revolutionary device in its own right, it has been known as a great gateway gaming machine for those not typically used to playing games. Nintendo enjoys its position as being an easy point of entry for the casual gamer that perhaps would not pick up an Xbox or a PS3. This has been the bread and butter for this market, followed by the hardcore fans that thrive on franchises like Mario and Zelda.

The iTouch/iPhone has quickly become the gaming alternative for those of us waiting in line or just passing the time. With quick pick up games that  can be played in short bursts and then put down, the release of an iTablet could easily transcend the small screen but bring the same mindset of carrying a slightly larger device that won’t just offer the same gaming diversion, but also offer up video, audio, and published entertainment.

Maybe I’m going out on  limb here, but I think Nintendo might be in their sights. Not necessarily as a gaming machine, but rather, eating up their casual gamer market share that are looking for something a little more sophisticated than a Nintendo DS or DSi interations.
