The Huffington Post has finally launched their UK edition and I think it is going to be big. Here in the UK there are very few independent news sources, so expect the Huffington Post to be the main player in this market.

On the US version of the Huffington Post they already receive over 1.2 million visitors each month from the UK. They have launched with only 300 bloggers is their system and this is far short of the 10,000 writing on the USA version. However, Im sure this will quickly increase.

As well as the UK expansion the Huffington Post is planning on entering a lot of other European markets in their native languages, so expect to see the Huffington Post all over the place!

Thanks to a new virus which makes users believe all of their data has been deleted, computer users everywhere are in mass panic and repair shops are busier than ever. This new virus is pure genius and is, as old-school hackers would put it, a “truly righteous” hack. It exploits a loophole in Java which gives the virus god-rights on the computer and installs without the user ever knowing. Unlike most viruses today which trick the user into thinking they have a virus and clicking ‘OK’ to clean it up (which actually installs it), it is embedded in webpages which use Java and installs silently. And since nearly everyone has Java turned on to surf the internet, it installs quietly and effortlessly. Suddenly, all the computer’s files, icons and folders are “gone.” Panic ensues as users frantically try to figure out how to recover their “lost” data. But what has really happened is that the virus has simply hidden every file on the computer! Genius, right? I can only imagine the developers are sitting back having a good laugh about it all.

So what do you do if you get hit by this lovely virus? A non-techy person could take it to a computer repair shop and spend anywhere from $85-$150 to get it fixed. Or for you geeks, you could fix it yourself using the following steps:

(Please note the following steps are for experienced users only – if you are not comfortable performing any of the below steps, take the computer to a professional!)

1) Immediately boot into Safe Mode (with networking) and do not leave this until you are done! (Mashing F8 at the boot screen will do this on most computers – read the boot screen if F8 doesn’t do the trick)

If you have to reboot at any time, make sure you boot back into Safe Mode!

2) Download and run RKill: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill. This will terminate the virus from running and allow you to clean up the computer. Any of the download links should work – they just have various names to confuse viruses.

3) You need to be able to see the folders/files which are hidden. To do this, do the following:

Click your start menu

In the ‘run’ field, type “cmd” and hit enter

Type: c:*.* /d /s –h

**The virus may make files read-only as well. If so, include –r.

**If the virus makes files system files, add –s.

Do NOT add any unnecessary –r or –s commands. Only use these commands if needed.

4) Make sure you have the following programs installed and updated:

Microsoft Security Essentials (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/)

Super AntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com)

Remove ANY other antivirus program you have as most don’t live up to their promises and often do more harm than good (ESPECIALLY Norton, McAfee and AVG).

5) Run a FULL scan on both Security Essentials and Super AntiSpyware.

6) Clean up your registry! (If not comfortable with this, pay for a professional cleanup!)

Go to Start –>Run–>’regedit’ and hit enter, then ‘Ok’ or ‘Yes’

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER–>Software–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
i. Remove anything which looks suspicious and is not a file you recognize. For instance, an entry with a name like FKA546542EJJAL and stored in a temp file is probably a virus (EXAMPLE ONLY). This is also a good time to remove unnecessary programs from starting up at boot time.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER–>Software–>Microsoft–>WindowsNT–>CurrentVersion–>Winlogon
i. Again, remove anything suspicious. If you don’t see anything obvious, DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING.

Go to HKEY_USERS–>’user name’ or ‘.DEFAULT’–> Software–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
i. Remove suspicious files as mentioned above
ii. Do this for EVERY user

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE–>SOFTWARE–>Microsoft–>Windows–>CurrentVersion–>Run
i. Remove suspicious files (be EXTRA careful here as some of these files are necessary for system files to run at startup. Again, if not sure, take it in for a professional cleanup!)

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE–>SOFTWARE–>Microsoft–>WindowsNT–>CurrentVersion–>WinLogon
i. Double click on ‘Shell’ and make sure it ONLY says ‘explorer.exe’. If there is anything after it, delete it!
ii. Double click on Userinit and make sure it ONLY says ‘C:Windowssystem32userinit.exe,”. If there is anything after it, delete it!

7) Lastly, do a quick file cleanup

Go to C:WindowsSystem32
i. Sort by Date Modified – click twice so you see the most recent date on top
ii. Going from the date you got infected (hopefully you are doing this the same day or the next day) remove any files which look suspicious (yet again, if you don’t know what you are doing, take it to a professional!)

Go to C:Windows and do as above but look at folders as well as files

Delete cookies and temp files (any self-respecting geek knows how to do this already)

So by now you have:

1) Made your files viewable and usable again

2) Removed the virus and any associated viruses or malware through using the recommended software

3) Removed registry entries to prevent anything bad from loading on startup and thus re-infecting your machine

4) Removed any negative system entries which may also be contributing to the problem.

You might have even discovered you had other spyware, malware or viruses you didn’t know about throughout all this. But if you did everything correctly, you should be clean. If not, now is definitely a good time to take the computer in for a professional cleanup as your machine likely has bigger problems than you were aware of. Good luck!

**Please note that running these commands will make EVERY file on the system viewable and editable, including previously hidden system files you shouldn’t mess with. Use extreme caution when working with files after doing this. If you aren’t comfortable with this, consider paying for a professional cleanup.

Angeles Duran, 49 year-old woman from Spain, said to daily El Mundo that she registered the Sun as her property last week, with the presence of notary.

And how this woman came with the idea for claiming the sun? Well, when she read that in last September there was a guy who registered the Moon and other planets the idea came to her head. And additionally to that, there’s an international agreement which states that no country may claim ownership of a planet or star, but it says nothing about individuals.

“There was no snag, I backed my claim legally, I am not stupid, I know the law. I did it but anyone else could have done it, it simply occurred to me first.” said Angeles.

The official document where Duran is taking ownership of the Sun, declares the person as: “owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the center of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometers.”

And after this, of course, she’ll be charging to anyone who uses the Sun. But wait, not all the money will be for her, she’ll spend only 10% of the funds for herself.

The good news is that I guess we now have someone to sue about skin cancer.

Google just initiated one of the most exciting acquisition ideas: Trying to buy Twitter with the nice amount of $4 billion dollars, says Yahoo Finance.

Google made earlier an initial offer of $2.5 billion to acquire Twitter, but not only the micro-blogging service refused this offer, but also said that the amount suggested was “insulting”. That’s why Google is apparently analyzing to increase the bid up to $4 billion dollars.

According to the report, an important source related to Twitter said that 3 months ago they’ve received a similar offer of $4 billion dollars from an unknown buyer (Microsoft?) but it was rejected.

What do you think? Can any of these big companies actually buy Twitter?

Twitter could resist these kinds of bids, in the same way Facebook did?

Many news sites are reporting that Steve Jobs was detained while visiting Japan for possession of ninja stars. Yes, that’s right folks, ninja stars. Now while every fanboy would love to imagine their fearless leader as a roof top hopping, invisibility mastering, ninja star throwing hero of lore, Apple is calling the story nothing but pure fiction.

According to the article posted on TechCruch, SPA!, the source of the report, says that while leaving Kansai International Airport near Osaka, Jobs was stopped, searched, and revealed he was carrying ninja stars. Furthermore it’s reported that while it may not have been Jobs, someone was indeed detained and forced to rid themselves of the objects. Apple reports that Steve did visit Japan, but was for vacation, had a great time, and returned without incident.

Still, the thought of Steve Jobs as a ninja warrior may be nice, it appears as if the whole story never even happened. On a related note…crime in the area decreased by 30% during the time Steve Jobs was visiting Japan. Coincidence?

So Steve, while you may not have been a true Ninja at heart, I leave you this song from the 90′s sequel to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, “Go Ninja, Go Ninja, Go!”

Actually he completed an important milestone a while ago; by accessing the PlayStation 3 kernel; where he found several secrets of this console, but the result of getting it hacked was not completed. Sony did not object any of his tasks, even more they encourage him to take over control of this console; but failure was at the end of his trip.

George said: “It was a cool ride, and I’ve learned a lot about a lot. Perhaps one of these days I’ll do a more formal goodbye.” Which makes us wonder about if this “retirement” it is not actually a defeated soldier who just gave up trying?

Hotz credibility was also questioned a while ago when he distributed a fake photo when he said he just hacked the iPhone 4.

Besides all that, we have to admit: Even though I’m no expert on hacking devices, the work on PlayStation 3 by Sony has been incredible.

Rihannon Mackay probably made one of the simplest and usually common mistakes a person looking for job could make, lying in their resume. Unfortunately for her, this came with a very high price: 6 months in jail.

Mackay was tempted with a good salary, around £23.000, and she decided to include a few aspects about her experience that were no accurate. And she finally got the job, which she maintained for over a year.

But the scam didn’t have a happy ending, after that year, the company had a lot of suspicious regarding the performance of Rihannon, so they’ve started researching about the current capabilities of this 29-year-old woman and she finally confessed that she lied about her capabilities in her CV.

The company took the case to court where she was found guilty of fraud, translating that into 6 months of jail. She also appealed this decision remarking that her decision to lie in her resume was made because was suffering from post-traumatic stress and depression.

Did you ever lie in your resume?

The EBook Market is hotting-up very rapidly with every man and his dog looking to make a quick buck (pun intended) on this new way of reading. Amazon revolutionised eReaders but now ASUS have announced their DR-900 EReader at CeBIT today.

ASUS, who are rapidly making a name for themselves with low-end electronics such as netbooks, may well be the perfect candidate to bring EReaders down to an affordable level. This new model will have a huge touch screen (1024 x 768 pixels), WiFi with a 3G option, 4GB of internal memory and a great interface from the screenshots I’ve seen.

It will support numerous popular file formats such as PDF, TXT, ePUB and Mp3 (there is also a 3.5mm headphone jack). I think this will be a great device. We’re still waiting to hear exact prices and launch dates from ASUS. I would be surprised if it wasn’t out by late summer.

News is spreading that the most popular netbook creator, Asus, will be launching three new Eee PC netbooks at CeBIT next week in Germany. The three new machines are said to be 10 inch screen models and have some exciting features.

For one thing, 14 hours is rumoured to be the battery life of one of the business models and will have an aluminium chassis with a brushed effect as seen above. Another model will have some premium features such as a fingerprint reader for increased security and will be the thinnest netbook Asus has ever created. USB 3.0 will also be standard on the netbooks.

Finally, matt displays and wider touchpads are the order of the day over at Asus.

I for one am becoming more and more fond of netbooks. They fill the gap between smart phone and laptop to keep us happy on the train or just act as a backup. What OS these new machines will be running is sill to be announced. More next week when we get some more information from CeBIT.

We’ve been waiting for this now for quite a while for this day to arrive. Samsung have just started shipping the first of their HD 3D TVs in the US as the world gets ready for 3D content to start going live. This is a whopping 55 inch TV that is stunning to look at, even when it’s turned off. However, all 55 inches will set you back just under $3,300. Ouch!

Plus, those shutter glasses which we talked about earlier will set you back another few bucks (between $150 and $200 probably) if you ever want to activate the TV’s 3D mode which I assume everyone who just paid an arm and a leg for the thing will.

Both Amazon and Sears are now selling the product with free delivery. So if you fancy watching World Cup 2010 in 3D, order now while stocks last. There’s sure to be a rush for these babies. Last time I checked Amazon there was only two left!

Twitter is steadily climbing to reach the 50 million tweets per day mark. This huge social network now represents a large proportion of the information shared on the web. More and more people are discovering breaking news through its trending topics (millions found out about the Haitian earthquake via Twitter).

Now Yahoo! have just signed a deal to be put on what Twitter calls it’s Firehose. This means Tweets will now be continually indexed by Yahoo!.

“Similar to the partnerships we have made with other large internet companies, Yahoo! will receive what has been dubbed “Firehose”—a full feed of public tweets sent to Twitter and our partners every second of every day from all around the world.”

Through this arrangement, you’ll be able to find tweets through Yahoo! Search amongst other Yahoo! services Mail and Sport. It is also said that Yahoo! will be building unique Twitter clients to enable people to tweet from inside the Yahoo! network.

Twitter hit the nail on the head when they discussed how Tweets are vital to the social news scene and their inclusion in other big Internet services is vital:

“Tweets may be short, but they have proven over and over again to contain valuable information. As the Twitter information network grows and expands, it becomes more valuable for everyone who participates. Our open approach helps us get closer to providing universal connectivity to a global network of immediate information.”

Evernote has been doing very well recently. It has been praised in the professional world for being the best way to make notes and store them. The iPhone and Android apps are some of the most popular downloads from their respective app stores and it appears the Evernote team knows no limits. Recently they’ve a new version (rebuilt from the ground up) and also surpassed two million users (it’s now creeping towards two and a half million).

Here’s what Evernote had to say about their new update:

“Evernote 3.5 for Windows is completely new. We rewrote it from the ground up to make it faster, more reliable, and just plain better than Evernote for Windows has ever been. Our goal was to use everything we’ve learned since our launch to make a great Evernote experience on Windows. ”

Evernote have also been busy making lots of new friends and partners in the tech world including players as big as Sony and Nokia. Every Sony laptop sold from now on will come with Evernote pre-installed and Evernote is now usable on the N900 because of a newly released plug-in! Other partnerships include:

TimeBridge: This helps you organize better meetings. Now, you can save all your meeting notes into Evernote.

Cliqset: Evernote and Cliqset create a permanent memory for your social streams and activity.

They ended their release on a very promising note about the iPad. Their apps have have already been a hit with iPhone users so everyone was anxious to know what they had in store for the upcoming iPad. Here’s what they said:

“We know you’re wondering. Rest assured, we have big plans for Apple’s amazing new device. Read our CEO’s blog post about Evernote’s history with tablets and plans for the iPad and other devices”

A few days ago, Apple took the extreme measure of removing almost all sex orientated apps from their app store, as we reported here. It seemed to be the case that they were selecting which apps to remove on a case-by-case basis. However, today only a few well-known apps are left such as the Playboy application. Apple have finally announced exactly why they did this.

So why did Apple decide sex apps had no place in the app store?

“It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see”

So for the issue of parental control and to not offend the iPhone’s female users, they decided to remove the applications from the store. I personally find this a little odd on two fronts.

Firstly, if women find these kinds of apps offensive then that’s fine. But they don;t have to download them. It’s not like Apple ever advertised them on the homepage. They were there in the background if anyone wanted them, that’s all. There are bigger fish to fry on that font rather than a few relatively soft-core apps.

Secondly, on the issue of parental control, I genuinely don’t see what good removing apps from the store is going to do. If a kid wants porn or anything of the sort couldn’t he or she just open up the Safari browser?

I fear this move is little more than Apple wanting to wash their hands of any objectionable material. It’s not that they’re against it.

Apple, have left in a few apps from big companies such as Playboy though, which seems to contradict the above. Wouldn’t they want to eliminate the big players? Or is the revenue loss just too much to swallow?

“The difference is this is a well-known company with previously published material available broadly in a well-accepted format,”

I don’t get it either.

Take one look at how they’ve been given clearance to buy and sell energy having just put in a request to do so a little over a month ago and you’ll see what I mean..

Basically, Google can now buy and sell energy just like any other electricity company in the US. This could involve targeting the commercial market or even residential. As for now though, it appears as though they will be using their new found rights to get some cheap energy for their own use. Running huge servers and data centres uses up a lot of energy so getting it at wholesale prices wouldn’t be bad for business at any rate.

That said, it might not be too long until we have Google bills coming through our letter box as they’re currently toying around with the idea of becoming an ISP too!

There has been a lot of buzz about the Dell Mini 5 recently. Mostly after the extreme let down following the Apple iPad launch. For example, we discovered that there were prototypes on the black market before Dell wanted them released. Of course, now there are quite a few review pieces knocking around with dozens of review popping up all over the place.

T3 Mag, a tech publication based in Greece, released a video with two presenters (and a very unfunny DELLicious joke). When watching it, I recommend skipping right to the end. This is the interesting bit.

They point out that the dock, which will be available separately from the device, had a HDMI output port which presumably runs either to a TV or PC (or both). I think that Dell have made a great addition here. HDTV is new enough to the market and with 3DTV hot on it heels so it’s great that we’re starting to see some serious compatibility on mobile devices. Hopefully it will enable us to have a better mobile entertainment industry.

Numerous apps with sexually explicit content such as Jon Atherton’s Wobble iBoobs have been removed from the grill.

He received this Email from the app store:

The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately.

We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter. If you believe you can make the necessary changes so that Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored) complies with our recent changes, we encourage you to do so and resubmit for review.

Sincerely,
iPhone App Review

Numerous apps, most catering to the male audience, have been removed from the store. A simple error message appears when you try to purchase one. However, it also appears as though Apple are choosing which apps to give the bullet on a case-by-case basis. Apps such as “Sex Strip” are reportedly still available. So are Apple choosing which apps are too explicit or just haven’t gotten around to eliminating all sex related apps?

They send this statement to Tech Crunch:

“Whenever we receive customer complaints about objectionable content we review them. If we find apps that contain inappropriate material we remove them from the App Store and request the developer to make any necessary changes to their apps in order to be distributed by Apple.”

Diagnosis? A dead battery. Bummer.

It’s really been a given for the past century. Batteries waste. Sure the Duracell bunnies would have us believe otherwise but they do. Even rechargeable batteries which can be found in everything from cameras to electric scooters can die due to being worn out. However, that’s all about to change. A new type of lithium-ion rechargeable battery has been introduced which is said to last over twenty years (around 10,000 charges). Now that’s value for money.

A Japanese company by the name of Eamex have cured the cause (<– link requires a subscription to read) of batteries burning out. With normal rechargeable batteries, the negative electrode deteriorates over use. This new design aims to coat the negative terminal in a special protective film (tin coated resin) which will protect it. This will last a regular user over twenty years.

So in theory, you could have five or six digital cameras but only one pair of batteries! Pretty cool. Expect to see these new batteries later this year.

I’ve actually been keeping my eye on this one for a few weeks now. It’s the up and coming Sony Ericsson Aspen. The reason it caught me eye is threefold. Firstly, it has a touch screen. Secondly, it has a Blackberry-style keypad. And lastly, it’s running WinMob 6.5.3. Oh, and it looks great too!

Now, a video has emerged which shows a Russian or Eastern European guy reviewing the phone. Unfortunately, it’s all in a foreign language but you can still make out some of the great features of the phone. He first shows you the exterior casing and build quality. Then he powers up the phone and takes you through some of the very impressive 6.5.3 menus and functions. The media player and messaging options are displayed in great detail.

Lastly, he compares the device alongside devices from other popular Smartphone manufacturers such as Apple and RIM. Check out the new Sony Ericsson Aspen below.

Less than a month ago, FourSquare, a location based social network commonly used to post your location on Twitter, announced that they were getting an update every second from their users. So that works out at around 600,000 updates per week. Not bad for a small start-up. However, in less than thirty days their user rates have doubled.

They shared with the world yesterday, via a tweet that they were getting over a million updates per week. 1.2 million to be exact.

That is a phenomenal increase in user ratings which most companies can only dream of achieving. I’ve noticed this increase myself on Twitter and am strongly considering using the service. After all, it’s more fun than our standard geo-location tweets, more social and have cool games to go along with it!

Mozilla has been known as a very safe browser as compared to its old enemy, Internet Explorer. In fact, many people used it for just that reason. So the last thing Mozilla needed was reports of Malware in two ad-ons which were available for download from their website.

“Two add-ons in the experimental section of addons.mozilla.org were found to be containing malware,” Mozilla said on its security blog. “These were not originally detected with the anti-malware scanning tools that we have been using. We have since increased the number of scanning tools, and will be taking additional steps to minimize the risk of further incidents.

It is thought that well in excess of 4,000 downloads of the ad-ons have taken place since they were first released in September. So are you one of the thousands of people who inadvertently infected their own machines? Well if you downloaded Sothink 4.0 and all versions of Master Filer then there’s a good chance you are. These installed Win32.LdPinch.gen and Win32.Bitfrose.32.Bitfrose Trojan respectively. So if you have downloaded these, I suggest running a scan of your system ASAP.

As I write this article, and as you read it, thousands of developers are scrambling to update their apps so they’re compatible with the iPad and to make better versions which suit the device. Nobody knew what was going to be in store for the app world with the launch of the iPad the other day. Many expected a Mac laptop without the base. Fortunately for app developers, it’s basically a big iPod touch!

This brings a whole new market to the app world. And a new market needs to be monitored for usage and revenue. Motally, who currently offer remote services for iPhone app developers have said that their service will be extended to include iPad SDK devices. That way, developers will be able to keep track on how popular their app is and what users are doing when on the app. Data which can be taken include page views, time spent using app and when the app is most frequently in use (time of day).

Developers will be able to get daily updates delivered straight to their own iPads or iPhones and can view complete statistics on the Motally website. Currently, the small start-up is quite successful and has helped some big clients keep track of their apps. These include Twitter, Yelp and Verizon.
