For those of us who are heavy Twitter users, we can remember the day when we signed up for an account and were offered suggestions of people to follow. Typically that list featured heavy hitter news agencies, a number of celebrities of varying backgrounds, and perhaps some large tech companies or sites. Chances are a few of these interested us, but for the vast majority it meant very little. Online networking has transcended more into a place for relevant conversation with people we feel we have common bonds with, rather than just a chat forum of open ended conversations. While others may comment in the public stream or friends us based on who we have friended, more of us are looking for real conversations as opposed to connecting with the likes of Ashton Kutcher who more than likely does not respond to his 1 million plus fans.

How do you follow people on Twitter?

So you can imagine it was interesting when I read an article on CNN from founder of Mashable, Pete Cashmore, on this very topic. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Pete at a variety of tech events, and a celebrity in his own right, is naturally a down to earth guy. Nevertheless, the article he wrote discusses how Twitter has altered the focus on specific celebrities and news agencies in their suggestion methods and now offers up categorized lists based on general interests.

Does this work any better?

Pete Cashmore seems to think it’s a step in the right direction. I’m inclined to agree, but I still feel like the suggestions are not people I would communicate with on a regular basis. More than likely I’m going to seek out local thought leaders and conversation instigators. Why should third party developers be the ones I turn to for niche suggestions, I think Twitter could be of great service if they did that from the start. Many new Twitter users are not typically well versed in the world of social networking, so third party developers are foreign to them. They make not seek out the latest Twi-(put your own ending, everyone else is) that can help them find specific people. Their only base of reference will be the suggestion lists.

So yes it’s a good first step, but perhaps more can be done. Pete Cashmore states that celebrities might see their follower numbers start to slow down due to this categorizing done by Twitter, and perhaps they will. Ultimately if people want to follow celebrities they will seek them out anyways. Personally, as much as I love celebrities, I’m looking to connect with real people that I can carry real conversations with.

What are your thoughts?

There’s a lot of social search options out there, but Nsyght has launched t

o not just offer up social search possibilities, but also offer up some great discovery methods for new content. When I first discovered Nsyght, it reminded me of an earlier company I reviewed called Worio which was a discovery search engine that had a lot of great social community aspects.

Nsyght offers social search via information based on the following networks: Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon, Flickr, Last.fm, Vimeo and Delicious. The unique aspect of gathering information from all of these sites is that users can create a social graph which is the true strength of this social search. The social graph is information pulled from all of your friends on the above listed networks, whether they are signed up with Nsyght or not, but because it’s information revolving around you, it’s graphed.

The graphs are definitely amazing, informational, at the very least interesting to view. Being able to distill information is a powerful resource as more and more data is being collected online and going through it can be extremely difficult. The recommendation engine is extremely powerful since it’s not just important to know who you know already, but who also might be in your line of interest to connect with.

Nsyght has some powerful legs to move on, and users that create their own profiles are going to get lots of information. I’m interested to see how this network plays out.

In a famous song it’s stated that “I found the law and the law one,” but what if you could actually win? What if your interest and voice actually meant something?

It’s not uncommon to find communities where apathy has set in and people just don’t seem to care. Alternatively there are communities where the inhabitants take their voice to the streets, airwaves, online, anywhere that can give them a platform to be heard. CitySourced.com is now a way for you to take your civic engagement online, but more than that, you can be mobile and capture your concerns the moment they become a factor.

CitySourced.com offers users an iPhone app and a web app that allows users to report civil issues of serious concern (potholes, graffiti, trash, snow removal, etc.). Their mobile app is simple and easy to use and allows you to capture media and send your concerns straight to City Hall.

It’s meant as a positive collaboration tool between the community and the powers that be to enact change, and develop stronger ties with their constituency. It’s also an innovative approach to engage a new generation in taking part and sharing their concern in a way that is easy for them by using devices they already likely own.

What are your thoughts? Does a mobile app such as what CitySourced.com is offering compel you to take your community duties more seriously? Chime in and let us know what you think.

It was earlier this year that I reviewed an online community for pet lovers, and in that time span since, we’ve seen online communities pop up around the internet for just about any specific niche thinkable. Ning is a popular niche community building site, and in that popularity we’ve seen interests mix, people network, and relationships build. The arena of real estate is one such niche that is getting it’s online community presence established thanks to BiggerPockets.com, where investors, professionals, and afficionados come together to talk shop.

Locally, where I live, real estate agents have taken the social engagement philosophy seriously and have taken their properties to the web in words, video, and photos. Some have seen higher levels of success, but overall the experience has been a boom to business. BiggerPockets capitalizes on such individuals by allowing them to gather to chat, exchange, and explore ideas they have.

Four categories covered on BiggerPockets are:

Knowledge

Networking

Dealmaking

Marketing

With almost 43,000 people connecting on BiggerPockets, something is working right. The market for real estate professionals has grown and many turn to it as their secondary or primary source of income. Communities like this allow for these individuals to grow and develop new ideas that they can use to increase their success.

If you’ve seen your own professional status increase due to a certain niche social community, let us know!

Social networks as they exist depend on the number of friends you start off with and thus you expand your network based on your existing network and grow from there. For many, not having an online presence makes it heard to start a social network when there is no online network to utilize to start. For many this can be frustrating and for many becomes the reason why they do not adopt the social scene. What if there was simply a network that didn’t rely on existing friendships and paired you with new people based on your profile to participate in unique shared experiences?

6Rounds is the answer and the unique network is sure to make a splash in the world of social engagement.

The network itself is designed to be a fully interactive experience incorporating the best of micro-messaging and video networks. There’s now a space for those not interested in hosting entire video shows, or who lack friends to build on a social profile on Facebook or Twitter.

6Rounds functions as a completely unique and diverse network that no user will get the same experience from their engagement. The network allows users to come together in a “live” setting where they will be challenged with “using a combination of webcams, real-time games, social activities and media engagements, we present a wide range of opportunities: from watching videos, playing real-time games, listening to music, Facebooking and Youtubing, to shopping together and beyond,” says the site. This sound a little like speed dating with the entertainment provided, and none of the relationship awkwardness attached. I can see how this would be appealing to both veteran and new entry supporters of social engagement.

The network is free and looks to combine the best of social networking, instant messaging, and video content to create an ever changing user experience.

Why Did I Start VOIS? Why Did We Launch The First Social Sourcing Site Now?

There are a lot of bad websites out there. A lot.

Websites with 8-bit graphics seemingly ripped from Atari games, with laughable copy errors that immediately diminish credibility, and with such awful usability that you need a Dr. Phil intervention to calm down after surfing through the third-rate portals.

This is one reason I co-founded VOIS.com (pronounced VOICE), or Virtual Outsourcing is Social. Not only can VOIS’ collaborative approach to completing projects produce superior results – from slickly branded and intuitive websites to fun, traffic-churning widgets – but it can also make it more affordable for businesses.

Don’t get me wrong; this is not the business owners’ faults. As a blogger for a major food website, I can say first hand that these are good people with the best of intentions. But just because someone knows how to make donuts, pizza or surfboards, it doesn’t mean they should know how to create a compelling online storefront. And hiring expensive firms on retainer often isn’t a workable business model for small and medium-sized businesses, or even larger firms that don’t have the bandwidth to handle their current business needs.

That’s why VOIS seeks to connect clients with expert Web professionals – from designers to developers and copywriters – to work on a project basis. What separates us from other business match-making platforms is that we allow and encourage the clients and talent to get to know each other first by exploring robust online profiles and messaging back and forth.

Click-and-mortar, web-driven start-ups have also had to change their game plan, and VOIS was developed for these businesses, too. With start-up capital tougher and tougher to attract, it’s no longer feasible for someone to hire developer and a CTO, build an infrastructure from scratch, then roll out and ramp up a product. I’ve met many people who have burned through $500,000 before looking at a more cost-efficient way of doing things.

And I really feel VOIS is that new way of doing things. We’re keeping VOIS wide open in terms of the scope of projects we accommodate – no niche focus or specialized tunnel vision. This will help us attract more users and offer truly turnkey solutions for our users.

So as the VOIS community grows, fueled by this added interpersonal dimension, I look forward at seeing some truly amazing work forged through the power of online collaboration. In other words, no more bad websites, or half-completed start-ups that could have been the next big thing.

In fact, I think VOIS is the next big thing.

IDG Tech Network is moving away from Adify and Doubleclick will be their new ad serving and technology partner. IDG confirm that everything will be moved to Doubleclick between the 12-19th of February and that the transition will be a smooth one.

Adify have not really been making too much improvements since they were acquired back in April of 2008 for $300 million by Cox Enterprises. It is interesting that IDG have moved from Adify to Doubleclick. I know Doubleclick are quite an expensive ad serving solution compared to most on the market today, but this move has happened because Adify are even more expensive. Adify have been charging around 20% or net revenues from networks who have been using their platform. This is extremely high and no wonder they are losing business. IDG has to be one of Adify’s main customers so this is a heavy blow.

I have been receiving a lot of emails lately from webmasters using Technorati Media as their ad network. Techn0rati is a blog search engine which launched an ad network back in June last year. At the time it was very big news, because Technorati was losing its way a little bit and also traffic at the same time. Thus, they launched Technorati Media which would open up a new revenues stream. At the same time Technorati purchased AdEngage which would be the backbone of the Technorati Media platform. AdEngage is a basic self service advertising platform which deals in CPC display advertising.

Anyways, Technorati Media launched their ad network with a lot of media attention and were offering some amazing CPM rates, in which was going to entice a huge amount of small and medium blogs. However, now since the economy is in a bit of a decline ad revenues have dropped but this is nowhere near the amount Technorati Media’s CPM rates have dropped.

I’m not too sure what Technorati Media is trying to achieve because using the current model they have for advertising, I’m sure they will be in a huge amount of trouble come the end of 2009. The economic crisis is not going to be fixed over night and it will take a couple of years to sort itself out, so Technorati please think of another advertising solution. CPC campaigns are great for advertisers because they get an instant return on investment for their money, but CPM is great for publishers because they can see a return on their investment. Technorati Media is struggling even to sell CPC campaigns even with some great sites on board, so this spells big trouble!

Disclosure: Im CEO of Adphilia which is a site representation company.

Social networking is turning into a bit of a bramble patch. Whilst making loads of new contacts and keeping in touch with old ones, we’ve somehow lost the part of the networking that is the social – the sharing of information. Be it photos, music or words of wisdom, it’s not quite as easy to let those who’d like to, know.

A solution, however, is afoot. Zentact, brought to us by among others, Eric Marcoullier of MyBlogLog fame, aims to collate your contacts into one place and allow you to share bits and pieces as you browse.

After signing up and adding in a few personal details, you can simply import your contacts from Hotmail, LinkedIn, Gmail and Outlook via a CSV address book and after a few seconds, they are on your system.

Next, and I highly recommend this, download the Firefox extension, all will be revealed shortly.

Now, the genius part. Each contact is taggable with their likes and dislikes and when a web page which has tags that match your contacts, if you installed the extension, a smart little box will flash up in the top right hand corner of your screen with the list of contacts who’s interests are relevant to the site. You can then send them a link and be merrily on your way. Remember, social.

Now the one down side to this is that if you have hundreds of contacts, it takes ages to go through them all tagging away. I’d recommend doing it bit by bit, adding tags as you go – this will take longer but does two things:

It lets you see who you will really be sharing with – there’s no point in having 300 contacts if you only ever talk to six of them regularly anyway, which means you can quickly identify those defunct e-mail addresses you’ve not used in years or people who don’t share common interests.

Secondly, it makes the whole process a lot smoother – you may like a tag binge, but frankly I’d rather be spending my time actually looking at what I came to see rather than typing in long lists of keywords, especially ones that are tricky to spell.

Now, it will take a while for you and Zentact to get to know each other, but the more contacts you tag and the more sites sites you send, the better Zentact becomes at recommending what is suitable for whom. This is a great service and especially suitable for anyone who is on a lot of social networks but can’t quite keep up with what is going on with who. Now you can build your relationships easily and stay in touch better.

We are lucky enough to have a handful of guest invites so you can try the private beta version of this site and tell all your friends about, which you can get by clicking here. Incidentally, you can tell your friends about it via Zentact and you can then invite them to join in this most social of networks.

The story was broken by Techcrunch and this seems like a huge leap for the adult network.

Little known Russian investment bank Renaissance Capital is representing them in the deal. The company hopes to raise $460 million in the IPO.

Penthouse acquired Adult FriendFinder in December 2007 for approximately $400 million. Currently the network has $244 million in revenues from the first three quarters of 2008.

This seems like a very interesting move by FriendFinder Networks. It shows that there is simply just so much money in the adult industry online and now they are looking to move public and grow the services even faster, while cashing out at the same time.

Wired have decided to close Listening Post and Underwire. They are citing a great deal of overlap among Listening Post, Epicenter and Underwire so there is a wisdom to concentrating our fire where it will have the most impact.

Wired have thanks approximately 12 writers who have worked on the blog and it still hasnt been fully confirmed if they will be completely out of a job or not.

This seems to be a very strange move from Wired. It might have just been better to slowly move the Listening post material into another niche instead of just closing down the 40th most linked to blog in the world according to Technorati. I really do think it is a shame because I have been really loving the Listening Posts articles over the last year or so, and if the writers ever need somewhere to write please contact me, because we also have another blog over at RouteNote in which we are always on the look out for writers who can help musicians in the current climate.

Microsoft have now made the decision to turn the Live.com site into a social network that will compete directly with Facebook and Myspace.

Microsoft Windows Live senior director Ryan Gavin has outlined why he is excited about the raft of social networking improvement in the new software, admitting that this would have been a more appropriate time to launch the ‘Live’ brand.

Talking to TechRadar, Gavin expressed his belief that Windows Live was a step in the right direction in giving people a platform to bring all of their social interactions together on the web.

“When I think about what’s happening online today it still is really two things – what’s happening in my world and what’s happening in the world and fundamentally those two activities make up 65 per cent of online usage.

“What’s happening in my world is where Windows Live is – in the communications and sharing section that makes up 33 per cent of the time online and includes email, instant messaging and social networking. Social networking has come on very strong as the third leg of that stool.

Legacy

Hotmail and what was formely MSN instant messenger make up the cornerstone of Windows Live’s audience, but adding in the social networking aspect is of paramount importance to Gavin.

“Live has its base in mail and messaging with 460 million active users and 17 per cent of online time specifically in the UK which is quite staggering when you think about it.

“The lines between instant messaging, email and social networking are really being taken down; we’re thinking about these things less as discrete categories and more as integrated thing.

“When you look at how things have evolved it’s been an explosion in rich ways to communicate in the past few years and it’s also set up a new set of challenges.

“So there’s been an explosion of ways to communicate but there’s only one consumer at the centre of this with one list of friends to manage or one list of contacts and they are saying ‘help me manage that list.

Communications

“There are ways that I like to communicate and ways that I like to be communicated to. Tons of ways to get hold of someone but I don’t want to log into five accounts to find out if someone is trying to get hold of me and it’s the same with stuff like documents, data and pictures. This gets spread over several devices but you should be able to access it easily

“Finally there are applications and a truth in that which says when you think about consumer service no one company is going to build the end to end consumer value properly so you’d better have platform so that third parties can make that first party platform better.

“And because it’s my data when I leave I’d better be able to take it with me.”

Gavin believes that this update indicates a sea change for the software and web applications, admitting that the past confusion over the move away from brands like MSN and hotmail to the ‘Live’ name make a lot more sense with this raft of changes.

“In some ways this would have been the best time to launch the Live brand,” he adds.

Unlike most other blog ad networks BuzzLogic is paying some good rates. When BuzzLogic was in private beta they were paying a minimum of $2 CPM (per 1,000 impressions) if your blog got accepted into the program.

To get accepted into the program, your blog should be hosted on one of the popular platforms like Typepad, Blogger, Wordpress and the frequency at which you post content will also be considered.

However, that all being said BuzzLogic will only pay you for US traffic. This is very limited at the moment, but as they grow im sure they will move into other markets. BuzzLogic will also pay less if you place their ad units below the fold, unlike most other ad networks.

That all being said BuzzLogic is definitely worth a look. It would be great to hear feedback from any current users! I have been trying to get Crenk into the BuzzLogic network, but they seem to be too busy at the moment to add us.

A lot of people have been talking recently about Performancing Ads, John Chow, Problogger and Shoemoney to name a few. I totally understand the system they are trying to put in place, but is it actually going to work? For a long time people have been saying that Advertising marketplaces are the way forward, but I dont think that the type of marketplace that Performancing ads has will ever work.

Performancing ads simply will add a banner onto your site so that you can self-serve advertising, a full automated system. While at the same time they gather information about your traffic and user demographics. This is meant to automate the system so the publisher doesn’t have to worry about negotiating individual contracts or the advertiser doesn’t have to worry about having a 5 email exchange before they can purchase.

Advertisers will only purchase advertising in this way on sites that are already major players in their niches, solid brands or emerging sites. Thus, it has a very limited return for publishers. A great deal of smaller sites have joined Performancing Ads in the hope that they will sell more advertising.

Selling advertising in this method for small sites simply doesn’t work, because they don’t have the traffic or brand to actually sell. Smaller sites really need to band together in a particular niche and use the safety in numbers method, cause then they will have a much better chance of getting more top quality advertisers with their broader reach.

This method of self service is great for only a very limited few sites. Therefore, I’m sure that Performancing Ads will only be a fad and they will die off soon enough. The only way this platform can work successfully, is if they have a huge amount of publishers, then a marketplace which makes it very simple to purchase across 10 sites for example, while at the same time they increase their sales team.

Currently, Performancing Ads is a company that medium or small bloggers shouldn’t be taking seriously!

There are so many social networking sites out there at the moment, but I really find it amazing that the older generation still haven’t caught on to this new phenomenon. Social network sites are amazing because they let everyone communicate with their friends, find people they haven’t seen for a long time, and network with people who have the same interests as them.

I thought I would put together an article that will help the older people find some social networking sites that will actually help them connect with people. So here they are, the top 5 social networks everyone should join.

Myspace – Myspace is the largest social network in the world. They have more users than any other and surprisingly the majority of their users are over 30. Myspace has a key focus around the music industry. If you are looking for a band to listen to or just find out when their next concert is on, then Myspace is the place to find them. Myspace also allows users to customise their own pages, so you can make it look as colourful or as bland as you want. However, I also think this can be the sites downfall from time to time, because I really hate looking at pages that are just either too over the top, or music starts playing, or just unreadable.

Facebook – Facebook is one of the best social networks in the world for actually finding people. Profiles are not customisable and their platform is very clean and slick. They arent focused on pushing through the pageview like Myspace, more importantly they focus on interactions and how users use their site. Facebook has has huge growth in international markets recently, so if you are trying to find a long lost penpal in China, then you might have a chance with Facebook. Facebook is for older users and users who normally have at least a degree. Im not always sure if that is a good thing or not.

Bebo – Bebo is a social network that has just been bought by AOL. It has a strong presence in Ireland and the UK, but predominantly for the younger generation. Bebo also has a focus on bands and artists, but this social network doesn’t really stand out from the crowd. Pages are customisable on the site, but nothing over the top like Myspace.

Hi5 – Hi5 is a social network that is being used a lot by the older generation. It is a social network that is growing in nearly all markets, but doesn’t really have a focus. Hi5 when first launched spent a lot of time trying to spam as many people as possible into joining. That tactic seems to have worked and their are now millions on users online. Hi5 would be a good place to head to find out if your older friends are online, but I would spend a lot of time using this site.

Orkut – Orkut is under the huge Google umbrella. Orkut is a great social network with a huge following in South America as well as other non-english speaking countries. Orkut has a very slick design (as you would expect from Google), plus it seems to be growing in english speaking countries by the day. This social network used to be closed, but now it is completely open and anyone can join.

So those are the top 5 social network sites you should join! Make sure you join and use them when needed, but don’t get to addicted.

Over the past 6 months I have been taking a keen interest in advertising online. Most new ventures are trying to find business models that can sustain them online, but it is quite difficult to know where to start. Advertising is the main form of monetization on the web at present time, and with this being the case there are more and more advertising networks poping up. These networks range from affiliate networks, CPC and even CPM.

In this article I am going to focus on CPM advertising networks. CPM means cost per mille, so every 1000 times your ad is views you earn a certain amount of money. Below is a quick list of some CPM networks that might help new publishers gain some well earned money. Normally, rates can vary depending upon several factors, type of site, type of traffic, locations and more. However, these networks will definitely be able to help you.

Therefore, im just going to cut to the chase and provide you guys with an amazing list of the best CPM advertising networks in the market today. CPM stands for Cost Per Mille, which is 1000. Therefore, they are networks that focus on providing advertising in which publishers receive a certain amount of money for every 1000 times an ad is viewed.

These days there are so many music communities out there it is hard to actually choose which ones are worth choosing or not. We have compiled a short list of the music communities out there and finally we will give you an idea of which communities are actually worth joining.

Myspace – Myspace is the king of all social networks and is leading the way in the music space. Everyone knows how myspace works, you sign up for a profile and then your able to upload 4 songs to your profile. Simple yet effective, because of how many artists are on the system. Additionally, myspace will be launching a new music feature in the coming months.

Bebo – Bebo who just got acquired by AOL for $850 million, is a big player in the social networking space. Currently, they are 3rd in the USA but leading the way in UK. The has the ability for bands to customise their profiles, and can even add songs to their profiles. However, doesnt have a music player at all and is very limited in so many ways.

Last.fm – Last.fm is a service that is growing every day. It is a service that keeps track of what music you listen to, and then helps you discover new music based on your preferences. Last.fm can be used to find new music, listen to music you already like, and get in touch with people who have the same taste in music as you do, discover new gigs in your local area. Last.fm also allows artists and labels to upload their own music and videos and promote them for free. As far as im aware only selected artists can now actually receive royalties from Last.fm when their music is played via their site.

Purevolume – Purevolume is probably the oldest music social network of the lot in this article. It has a sleak design and it is tailored just for artists. Unlike most other social network there arent poor quality ads all over the place and Purevolume is actually still strong when it comes to traffic stats and user participation. The site itself is still missing several features that are need by artists, but the overall feel is still top notch.

Imeem – Imeem is a new social network which allows artists to upload their music and actually make royalties via plays on the Imeem site. Currently artists need to have an agreement with Snocap, so that Snocap can track the amount of plays done on Imeem and then Imeem pays artists a percentage of the advertising revenue they receive.

MOG – is a social network that helps you “discover people through music and discover music through people”. Basically MOG makes it easy for you to find new music to listen to by using custom filters and personalized suggestions. The site is very similar to Last.fm, but has a few twists in their algorhythm. MOG also provides users with reviews, news and streaming audio. MOG also features a music TV that continuously broadcasts videos taken from YouTube.

iLike – iLike is another service that is similar to Last.fm, but has a nice twist that allows you to also organise your music. It lets you share music libraries with your friends, browse and sample their most played songs, and compare your compatibility scores. iLike will also send you music recommendations directly in iTunes.

JamNow – is a social network aimed at musicians that allows them to create audio content online in real-time. JamNow isn’t a site that simply makes you “post and listen” to audio content: its platform enables real-time music collaboration and lets you schedule live jam sessions and listen to musicians that are playing right in that moment.
