IsoHunt Behind China’s Great Firewall

China is no stranger to Internet censorship. The country’s Great Firewall includes many well known sites, but up until now BitTorrent sites have never been blocked.

There was a short blocking incident two years ago when Mininova, isoHunt and The Pirate Bay were hijacked and redirected to the leading Chinese search engine, Baidu. However, this issue was solved in a matter of days without an official explanation.

In the years that followed the Chinese government mainly targeted local BitTorrent sites, leaving the previously mentioned sites unharmed. According to reports from isoHunt’s owner Gary Fung, this tolerant stance might have changed as visits from China to isoHunt have plunged dramatically.

The drop in traffic is so significant that any technical difficulties have to be ruled out. Last Saturday, isoHunt had only 1,349 visitors from China compared to 131,362 the week before, a massive 99% decrease.

Despite the signs that this ban of isoHunt is intentional, there hasn’t been any official word from the Chinese authorities on the situation. Whether it has anything to do with the recent P2P site crackdown in China, where the authorities shut down hundreds of local sites including some of the biggest BitTorrent trackers, is unknown.

IsoHunt owner Gary Fung told TorrentFreak that he recommends that Chinese users who want to continue using the site should access it through a foreign proxy. Gary said that China was never a huge source of traffic for his site, but sees the ban as a “big deal” for the ongoing net censorship debate.

Although China’s authorities are not known for their democratic principles, speaking out against the ban might help. “China has flipflopped between site bans, so putting on pressure and people voicing opinions do matter,” Gary added, referring to China’s previous banning and unbanning of websites such as Wikipedia.

New TV Streaming Site TVGorge.com Wiped Out By Legal Threats

In early February reviews of hot new streaming TV site TVGorge.com started appearing.

“If you’re outside of the US and sick of not being able to see good TV online or just tired of waiting for Hulu to get your favorite shows, you’ll want to check out TVGorge and its huge archive of shows,” wrote Lifehacker.

“The amount – and quality – of the content on TVGorge is nothing short of impressive,” wrote TechCrunch. “All episodes from all eight seasons of 24 are on there, for instance, in addition to dozens of episodes of shows like Californication, 30 Rock, Heroes, Lost, CSI, Mad Men, Grey’s Anatomy, The Simpsons, and so on. I counted 128 TV shows on the site.”

TVGorge was an indexing service and didn’t carry any material on its own servers. The site’s engine found sources for new TV episodes stored on other sites and either embedded or linked to the videos found. Users flagged broken links and also added their own links to TV shows.

The videos available via TVGorge came with no geo-lockouts, meaning that anyone worldwide could enjoy them without being bugged by “this show is not available in your area” type messages.

In total TVGorge linked to approximately 5500 episodes, 10,000 embedded videos, offered 60,000 external links, and reached 3 million people a month.

While nearly every review of the site was positive, most contained an element of doubt. Is TVGorge actually legal? Could it survive longer term? The general consensus was ‘no’ and ‘no’. Although it could be argued that the answer to the first question is still possibly up for debate, the latter proved fairly accurate.

Around a week ago, TorrentFreak received information that TVGorge was being threatened with legal action. At that stage the site was still fully operational, but very quickly the situation changed. We are now able to confirm that TVGorge was ordered to cease and desist by the MPAA on behalf of the companies they represent.

“TVGorge has recently been advised to remove all of our indexed content,” said the site’s operators in a statement.

“We understand content owners have a need to protect their content and we can only hope they take the initiative to provide easy access to all of their great TV shows at an international level. If anything, hopefully we have shown them that people are desperately looking for a place to watch their favourite TV shows.”

The site’s operators are remaining upbeat and say they will continue to index streaming sources for the TV shows they list, but of course, these will now link to authorized sources instead with the same restrictions that drove people to sites like TVGorge in the first place.

The new sources for TV shows are slightly less exciting…

Nevertheless, TVGorge won’t stagnate. The site will take on a new shape by becoming a TV guide featuring breaking news, forums, episode guides, TV schedules, show and episode reviews and linking to or embedding authorized sources from around the world.

Although TVGorge’s legal woes may be over, TorrentFreak has been informed that many other streaming sites are also currently the subject of legal threats and unwanted attention.

Considering the seriousness of the situation it would be irresponsible for us to publish the information we have been given without absolute confirmation, but we are told that in one particular case in a European country, a police investigation is underway against a major site. We asked the site and its host questions, particularly since the news we received corresponded directly with some site downtime, but the responses we received were generally pretty vague.

It may well be that their hands are tied. Time will tell.

Everyone has wanted free movies online for a very long time now, but in most part this has been near impossible for legal reasons. At the moment there are several new startups and sites popping up to fill this void, and MovieMotion really wants to gain a share of that market.

MovieMotion is a really well designed movie site which promotes some of the worlds most recent movies. Its great to see that MovieMotion has a simple design with very easy navigation options for their users. Once you have selected the movie you wish to view you are sent to a download page in which you need to just download a simple peice of software and then the movie is all yours. It would be amazing is MovieMotion could move from a download option to a stream version, this always seems a lot more popular with users as there is no chance of downloading a virus or something similar.

Zenetworks: Watch Movies Online For Free

There are so many places these days where users can head to watch movies for free online. Zenetworks is a new site that aims to make all movies accessible for everyone in the world for free.

Sites like Hulu and Seesaw are geographically locked (normally to the USA), but unlike these other services Zenetworks allows users from any country access their sites and not just watch the movies, but also have the option to download.

The site itself is quite limited in design, but it has a lot of chance to change over time as it grows traffic numbers. I would personally like to see a much more interesting background and also promotion good movies titles in the sites sidebar. Once clicking on the individual movie page it would be great to see a showcase of the movies with the whole page design in the style of the movie, but this is really lacking and its hard to even tell which movie you are going to be downloading.

Zenetworks has a lot of potential and at the end of the day it provides what it stated on the box, and that’s movies in which anyone can watch from anywhere for free!

Indie Film Makers Rejoice in Openfilm

The independent circuit in any field is risky, but moreso for the entertainment industry. Independent filmakers, like musicians, comedians, etc, all struggle to be seen, recognized, and signed eventually with some dollar signs that hopefully repay the long days of struggling. Getting yourself out there is just a little easier now that more people are able to access the web, but it’s still no guarantee, but it’s always a good start.

For indie film makers in particular I discovered Openfilm, which is an indie film site that works not just as despository for your work, but also as a sales/marketing machine for what you’ve created. The site is backed by some amazing film makers all out to help indies find their audience and hopefully find their day in the sun. Considering how many independents are out there, it’s a tough sell, but after talking with a few local short film makers, they’ve found it to be priceless.

The site focuses on high quality live action and animated films from just about everywhere. Premium content on the site allows the film makers to make a little money out of the gate, but as they grow in popularity, larger deals can be made with those that have a much greater interest in giving the film an opportunity.

Fancast is a new startup which allows users from anywhere in the world to watch movies or tv shows within their database. As well as new tv shows and movies they also have a great selection of older episodes or releases.

The site itself is very easy to use and has some great features. All tv shows and movies can either be watched in site size or full screen, plus they have an embed option so you can add movies to your site very easily and efficiently.

Currently, Fancast doesnt seem to have advertising on their site, but im sure this revenue stream will be added in the near future. Make sure you head over to the site and check it all out for yourself!

Viewpipe: Watch Full Movies Online for Free

Viewpipe is a new movie site in which users can watch full movies online for free. The site has no limitations, but the current movie list isnt really that up to date.

Once you find the movie you want to watch it then directs you to a page in which you need to fill out a quick survey to watch the movie. I find the site poorly designed as it is just a customisation of a free wordpress theme, plus Im not a big fan of the fact that you need to fill out a survey to watch a movie. There are a lot of improvements needed on this site.

Cinema Haven: Watch Movies Online For Free and Without Downloading Any Software

Cinema Haven is a new site which allows users to watch movies online for free without having to download any annoying software. The site has a simple design which is very easy to use, plus their collection of movies is growing on a daily basis. Cinema Haven has some good new releases, including Avatar and New Moon!

Some of the movie quality is a little poor, but that is expected as this site and the movies available arent entirely legal. However, I still recommend Cinema Haven as a great source of movies in which anyone can access anytime from anywhere in the world.

Nintendo Wii to Have Netflix Streaming Video and Movie Service Live Very Soon

Nintendo Wii has done really well in the game console market, but its still a long way behind Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 when it comes to adding other services and features within the platform. Playstation 3 has blu-ray movie playback capabilities as well as online connectivity through the Playstation Network while the Xbox has a high-definition movie store and also an online chat facility. And yes, both the PS3 and Xbox also have Netflix service.

Nintendo has announced that they will now be adding Netflix service to its Wii console to enable video streaming, according to a report from the NYT.

The new Nintendo Wii feature will allow Netflix subscribers to choose from a catalog of older movies and TV Shows through their Nintendoo Wii and watch them immediately on their connected TV.

When the new feature goes live, Nintendo Wii owners using broadband Internet connection at home and who have been subscribe to Netflix’s DVD-by-mail service for the last 9 months can use the new service without incurring any additional cost. But before Nintendo Wii users can watch the movies, they will have to use a free software disc from Netflix which they need to put into their consoles.

Movie Downloads Will Soon Be Available on YouTube

Bollywood film-maker Vinod Chopra has announced that their latest film, Three Idiots, will soon be available for download on the YouTube website.

YouTube has a lot of revenue options and here is the newest, pay-per-download business.

You could always download videos from YouTube using “hacks” but this is probably the first time where people will be able to “legally” download a full-length movie from YouTube after paying Google a certain fee.

Currently most people involved are keep very tight lipped about how much each download would cost, the size of the downloads, and other key details.

For Anime fans, finding good quality shows and art can be difficult for two main reasons; it’s a very small niche and the language barrier.

However, I’ve come across a great site which should suite just fine.

AnimeCrazy is a great site for videos and pictures. All of the videos uploaded below to specific shows with the whole series available. Each show has its own page with all the episodes listed. The videos are of an extremely high quality and they stream quickly.

Those which are in Japanese have English subtitles.

There are also review (submitted by registered users) for almost all of the 800+ shows. The best shows (via a percentage system) are listed on the homepage.

There are also forums and Japanese Drama shows available. Check it out at AnimeCrazy.com .

Internet Fame Being A Movie Celebrity

Hollywood, for some, is a place of fantasies and dreams considered unattainable by many. There’s a great many of us who at one point dreamed of making it big and entertaining millions. For some of us we watch movies and laugh, saying that we could easily have played that part better. Well now you can put yourself in a movie with Yoostar.

Yoostar provides you with a green screen, studio-grade webcam, remote control and PC software. The price for being famous comes in at the low cast of $170. The package comes with 12 movie scenes to select from, placing you in the middle of the action, but more scenes are available via download. So now reach that Hollywood status may not be something we all achieve from real life, but in all, this sounds like a fun way to approach a Friday or Saturday night, but how long does the fun really last?

Your recordings and placement into the movie scenes are spit out in a web-ready clip that can be posted online for all your friends to see. Personally this sounds like something I’d probably pass over, but for some of us, it’s as attractive as Karaoke. I know better that if I was not cast in a movie or allowed to sing a song I stay away…far away. The worst part of the whole experience?

Free Movies Theatre: Watch Movies Online Without Downloading

Previously here on Crenk we have reviewed many sites that aim at providing users with a hub for being able to watch movies online without downloading anything. Today we have come across another site that claims to do this the best, FreeMoviesTheatre.

FreeMoviesTheatre pretty much does what it says on the tin and that is provide some great movies users can watch right within their browser. The site itself provides a great list of genres from Animated to Bollywood and Sci-Fi. All the latest movies are there too, plus they have a simple option to download the movies. I would like to see the site have a easier download function instead of using a third party, however if they did this them I’m sure their site would be illegal.

Currently, FreeMoviesTheatre has over 4500 movies online and they are growing fast. Im not entirely too sure how legal this site is, but make use of it before they get taken down!

StageVu: What Movie Trailers, Movies, TV Shows and More for Free Online with No Download

Stagevu is a new site in which im not too sure how long it will be around, so make sure you check it out before it is completely gone. Stagevu is a basic service that allows users from all over the world to search and watch movies, movie trailers, tv shows and more, all for free and without having to download any software.

Stagevu to me seems completely illegal and im sure the site will get shut down eventually, but in the meantime it is completely legal for users to use the service. Most of the movies on the service do seem like they have been filmed illegally in China by handycam, but if you keep looking you are bound to find a good version of the movie you are looking for.

Here at Crenk we have previously talked a lot about sites like Movie Watch List and Trailer Reviews in which seem to offer a similar service and have been around a lot longer, so we will see how long Stagevu can stick it out.

Voddler: Free Movies and TV Streaming Service

Voddler is a new video startup that launch back in private beta back in July 2009. Currently it is rumoured that only 1,500 people have access to the site, so we wanted to run through the service for everyone else.

Voddler won’t be launched officially until sometime this fall, and then only in the Nordic countries for starters. The agenda is to go global, though.

Voddler aims to do for movies and TV series what Spotify is doing for music. Although in private beta Voddler already seems to be getting a lot of buzz in Scandinavia, so we hope to let everyone else know about it.

Voddler is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, Voddler will also be providing a Linux-based box with a pre-installed client that you can easily connect to your TV to get that home cinema feel.

Here below is a screenshot of the latest design of the landing page, designed to work best on widescreen televisions.

Movies are of course a lot more bandwidth-intensive than music. How well Voddler works for you will depend on your Internet connection. To get 1080p HD quality you should have an 8 Mbit/s connection, for 720p HD quality you should have a 5 Mbit/s connection, and for DVD quality you should have a 2.5 Mbit/s connection. Contrast this with Spotify which only has to deal with music streaming and therefore works just fine with a mere 256 kbit/s connection.

Seat Hound – Ticket Price Comparison Site

Ever been dying to go to a concert, football match or F1 Grand Prix but the most plausible thing happened and you went to buy the tickets two seconds too late. Despair and anger (mostly towards yourself). The only chance you stand now is going on a mission to hunt down someone who has tickets (that may or may not be genuine) and pay two weeks wages for them.

Fear not – seathound.com has the answer. It’s a pretty basic idea and that’s why I love it. Ask any businessman/entrepreneur and they’ll tell you that tackling everyday, well-known problems is the way to make millions in this world.

Seat Hound will locate dozens of tickets for sale. Some are on eBay, others are on independent ticket sales sites – but who cares where you get them? The point is that you’re going!

I typed in ‘U2’ to check it out. I was greeted by dozens of search results from their upcoming gig in Croke Park here in Dublin to events as far away as October in Phoenix. The guys at Seat Hound have clearly done their work. Even small artists that you wouldn’t hear of everyday are listed. This is a great service that I fully intend to use – a lot!

It also saves you money as it displays the ticket prices right next to one another so you can get the best one. Seat Hound will also be so kind as to tell you where the ticket is in relation to the stage, pitch or track etc…. so you won’t need to bring the binoculars.

One bad thing that I will say about it however (and I really am nit picking here) is that it is US focused. While you can still find gigs all over the world – the homepage is dominated by the stripes and the stars. A UK or European version wouldn’t go amiss. 9/10

Vuze: Bittorrent Media Player That Lets You Download and Stream from the Internet

Vuze is a handy piece of kit that lets you stream or download videos from the internet. Similar to services already available such as MegaVideo, only now you have the added functionality of a media player, library and subscription services for podcasts and specific genres.

You download Vuze here (less than 10Mb) and install it in under five minutes. No need to restart your PC or do any complicated set up, so already it was in my good books. Upon opening the program for the first time I was greeted by a fairly simple interface that the average computer user could navigate. Search Bar, Library, Current Downloads and even a helpful ‘Getting Started’ section to guide you through the stages (although you really shouldn’t need it).

One thing that caught my eye was HD. Lucky for me, my new laptop was indeed HD compatible so I decided to search for a HD clip. I typed in ‘Public Enemies’ into the search bar and up popped a load of results. I could either watch the whole movie or simply a trailer. The HD quality was outstanding which surprised me as the download took less than a minute. Sound and playback quality was also top notch. No jumpy movies like you get with browser players.

Another section is ‘Devices’. Now, Vuze is fully compatible with a host of portable devices such as your iPod, iPhone, laptop, and other portables. It also works a treat on the PS3 and XBOX 360.

If you’re a videographer you can also publish your content on the Vuze network. This is great for publicizing your stuff to a large audience and also for Podcasts looking to branch out. It’s really easy to upload etc.. There are also special packages available for those uploading load of content to give them priority and good exposure on the Vuze Network.

One area I think that Vuze could improve is with the extra content. There should be a minimal browser built in to allow you to view the community pages without having to kick-start Firefox. This would give it a seamless affect and just be handy in general.

All things considered however, this is a spectacular piece of software and one I’ll be using a lot from now on. I think web based video torrents are having their final farewells. 9/10

Sidereel is one of the best looking video search engines I have seen online. Sidereel is a video search engine that lets users easily find websites where they can watch their favourite tv shows and movies online for free. Sidereel doesnt host much of the content themselves, but they do have a lot of tools that help users discuss and share their favourite shows.

Sidereel is always upto date with all of the major tv shows on all the major networks in the USA and International. THe discussion section of Sidereel is a great place to see what other people are thinking about the tv shows or movies and the community is growing on a daily basis.

It is also great to see a professionally designed site that isnt cluttered without crappy ads everywhere.

Preview Networks has just launched a new iPhone application that brings the newest and most popular movie trailers to your iPhone for free. Preview Networks is the company behind filmtrailer.com and supplies film trailers to the Guardian, the Times and 1000 other sites in 9 European countries for free.

The App, Trailers International, came about because they were simply tired of seing on American film trailers on iPhones. Trailers International is completely free in the App store and it includes accurate release dates and meta data for 10 European countries.

Want To Watch Movies Online For Free and Legally? Now Head To YouTube

YouTube has always been the number one destination online to see quick short videos of pretty much anything. Now YouTube has added a new feature to its USA site, tv shows and movies! Professionally produced dramas, comedies, documentaries, cartoons, and news programs.

So why the addition? Simple, professional content is a lot easier to monetize than user generated content. According to the New York Times, Google has signed agreements to distribute content from Sony, Lions Gate, CBS, MGM, and other studios.

The move will allow YouTube to place pre-roll, post-roll, and interstitial ads in video content, something it doesn’t do with user generated videos.

Right now, the selection of TV shows and movies on YouTube is rather sad. Most of the content consists of old programs that you probably forgot existed, plus one new show from CBS: Harper’s Island. Since Fox and NBC are the driving forces behind Hulu, it’s not likely that we’ll see their content on YouTube anytime soon.

Over at Stanford artificial intelligence researchers have developed an amazing piece of software that im sure Google will purchase very soon. The software makes it easy to place and manipulate an image into a piece of video. Thus, could allow advertising to be simply placed in any video.

It works for videos as well – you can play a video on a wall inside your video. The technology can cheaply do some of the tricks normally performed by expensive commercial editing systems.

This software would be perfect for video makers who place their videos onto Youtube, because they will be able to sell advertising very simply within the videos. This would also mean that they could place their videos and promote on Bittorrent related sites, cause the content owner is drawing an income. Just a thought!

Pocket Clapper: iPhone App for Making Motion Pictures More Fun

This is a new iPhone application on the market that I thought would make a few people smile. Its a motion picture clapper. Pocket Clapper is its name and it is now available for sale in the iTunes App store for $0.99.
