Computers are just like anything else, they need attention and maintenance. Even though Mac’s are known the world over to be reliable and quality computers, they still need some pretty routine things done. Just like a car, you can’t perpetually ignore it and expect that it will run forever. Here’s a list of some of the routine operations you should be doing regularly to your Mac so you can make it run better and longer:

Disk Space

Checking your disk space is the first thing you should do. Every model comes with a different hard drive size. You can go online and look up your model and see how big your hard drive is. You can check this simply by double clicking on your HD icon on your desktop. In the bottom bar of the window that pops up, you’ll be able to see how much is left. If you have less than half of your space left, then you should probably start cleaning up your hard drive. Go through all of your files and applications and see what you don’t use or programs that you just don’t need anymore. Rarely does anyone do this and all that extra junk is cluttering up your computer and making it run slower. You should be doing this on a regular basis.

Programs

If you’re noticing slow performance, look at how many programs you run at any one time. Some people set their computer to automatically start programs when the computer is turning on. Though this feature is handy for those who need specific programs all the time, the majority of users simply have too many programs running at once. If you only open up the programs that you need at the time, then you’ll see a noticeable difference in the way your computer runs.

Widgets

Widgets are the little icons that rest below the screen. They’re quick links to the applications and the sit in your dock. If you’ve ever seen someone with practically every application on their computer just resting in their doc, then you should realize that these widgets consume critical power from the processor and memory. You might have thought that it’s harmless to keep all of those applications resting in your dock, but in actuality, it’s taking up a lot of your computer’s resources, even when they’re not active.

Disk Utility

This is another way to speed up your Mac’s performance. You can go to the disk utility and select your computer’s internal hard drive and then click Repair Permission. This will take some time, but the results will be substantial. Doing this every month will check and fix your Mac’s internal hard disk space and do wonders for its operations optimization.

All of these steps are good to do regularly in order to keep things running smoothly. If you ever have an issue with performing any of these tasks, then you can go online for some Technical Support. Not everyone is computer savvy and there’s nothing wrong with that. You could also look online for other ways that you can optimize your computer’s performance.

PwnageTool 4.3 has just been released and it is the easiest way to jailbreak any iOS 4.3.1 device. Here is a step by step guide on how to implement PwnageTool 4.3.

Step 1: Download PwnageTool 4.3 for Mac.

Step 2: Download iOS 4.3.1 firmware. Move all these files to the desktop.

Step 3: Start PwnageTool in “Expert mode” and select your device:

Step 4: Browse for iOS 4.3.1 firmware for your device as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 5: Now select “Build” to start creating custom 4.3.1 firmware file:

Step 6: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw file for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch which will be jailbroken.

Step 7: Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode using PwnageTool:

Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds

Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds

You device should now be in DFU mode

Step 8: Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left “alt” (option) button on Mac, or Left “Shift” button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update” or “Check for Update”) button in the iTunes and then release this button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.3.1 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file that you created above, and click on “Open”.

Step 9: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and don’t do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.3.1 on your iOS device. Your iOS device screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, your iOS device will be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.1.

Apple has just seeded Mac OS X Lion to developers and this is something that every developer is going to want to get their hands on. The Max OS X Lion has been quite buggy so far, but this is the first main update for the software.

It seems like Apple went from 11A390 for the initial build to 11A419. That seems to indicate that a number of builds were tested out internally before this one was released.

It is expected that Mac OS X Lion will be released at WWDC which is coming up in a couple of months time.

This build of OS X Lion is for developers only, so make sure you grab it now.

Disk Drill Basic version protects files from accidental deletion with Recovery Vault and recovers lost data from Mac disks.

Disk Drill PRO features a number of advanced scanning modes for data recovery of FAT, NTFS, HFS/HFS+, other file systems. It allows to rescue files which were deleted long ago and even after formatting.

Data recovery software is always important and this kind of software will always be needed. Disk Drill is a great tool that is definitely worth a look.

Open System Preferences and click Displays to display its preferences.

Click the Display tab; your display’s supported resolution settings are listed in the Resolutions pane, from the lowest to the highest resolution.

Select any of the choices to change the resolution. A lower resolution gives you less desktop space to display windows and interfaces, but these will also appear larger. A larger resolution maximizes your screen space, letting you see more of a photo or document, and can help you manage applications whose interface elements span multiple windows.

To adjust your screen’s brightness, move the Brightness slider left to make it dimmer, or right to make it brighter.

Koobface Trojan is back, and now it comes with a few surprises for some friends: Infecting Mac OS X and Linux OS. Intego, the Mac Security Blog, informed that this virus is spreading through social networks and does affect Mac computers as well as Linux.

Koobface appears in social networks like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace and now they will not infect only Windows computers. One of the common messages we should receive indicating the presence of Koobface: “Is this you in this video?” once we click on the link it will try to run an applet from Java which will install a malware in the OS.

As for Windows, Koobface will run a local web server and an IRC Server, acting as a Botnet and as a DNS changer; and of course will try to reproduce to other computers.

Intego assures that the Intego VirusBarrier X6 and X5 detect and eradicate this malware, but we must avoid running any unknown Java applet in our computer, and if so, we should detect an installation is running and quickly cancel it.

Prey Project it’s pretty cool software created for users who want an effective way to locate their devices in case they get stolen. Prey can be installed in Windows, Linux, Mac or any device with Android OS, including smartphones.

Prey can notify users about the device location sending a signal over the Internet, or SMS in case of Android phones. The program runs as an agent in background and is completely silent. Here are some of the specs:

Open Source and completely free.

100% geolocation aware. Prey uses either the device’s GPS or the nearest WiFi hotspots to triangulate and grab a fix on its location.

Know your enemy. Take a picture of the thief with your laptop’s webcam so you know what he looks like and where he’s hiding.

No unauthorized Access. Fully lock down your PC, making it unusable unless a specific password is entered.

Wifi auto connect. If enabled, Prey will attempt to hook onto to the nearest open WiFi hotspot when no Internet connection is found.

Watch their movements. Grab a screenshot of the active session.

Scan your hardware. Get a complete list of your PC’s CPU, motherboard, RAM, and BIOS information.

Light as a feather. Prey has very few dependencies and doesn’t even leave a memory footprint until activated.

Keep your data safe. Hide your Outlook or Thunderbird data and optionally remove your stored passwords, so no one will be able to look into your stuff.

Full auto updater. Prey can check its current version and automatically fetch and update itself, so you don’t need to manually reinstall each time.

OpenOffice 3, released in 2008, reached a new milestone this week with the release of the 3.3 beta build. This new compilation does not offer much new functionalities, but does include several fixes.

We’ve also announced in November of 2009, that OpenOffice 3 reached 1 million downloads, making it the most popular OpenOffice suite so far. The 3.3 build just added a few more small features:

Improvements in the dictionary and translations.

Possibility to add different colors in sheets.

Stability improvements and several bugs fixed.

This build is available to download for Windows, Mac, Solaris and Linux (of course); in Linux versions we can use the 32bit and 64bits. All builds available here.

The open source community maintains a simple way to do things, never stop collaborating. Even though the work it is not always great, they keep offering possibilities; which in this world is a vital thing to have.

We’ve probably all heard of internet dating sites and the success stories for a few people here and there. Sites like E-harmony and Match.com claim to be the premier dating sites matching hundreds of thousands of people. I think we all know how it works, we create a profile, we submit a photo, we include our preferences and hope for the best.

All things considered, if you’ve used a dating site in the past did you ever put that you were an Apple enthusiast hoping to find someone that was just as much of a fan as you? Well chances are those sites don’t rank too high in connecting star crossed Apple lovers, but now Apple fans have something to swoon over.

Cupidino, a play off the Cupertino, CA based Apple, Inc., is a beta dating site created specifically for Apple fans. Now your brand new iMac could be the thing that brings the love of your life into your REAL life. When was the last time you heard iPods bringing people together? Well if you said never, that might change.

“So far, Apple hasn’t taken issue with the similarities. Sampat said he received an e-mail from Apple’s business development team in San Francisco, which basically said it was aware of Cupidtino and to let the group know if he needed any help. Apple spokeswoman Kristin Shuguet said the company had no comment.” – Article on Slice of Sci-fi

The site was initially free, but as of Wednesday, will charge $5/mo for people to be a part of the network. Currently the site has attracted over 16,000 fanboys and fangirls looking for that special someone to share their sweet Apple love. As if your love for Apple was not exclusive criteria alone, the site also only works on Apple related browsers and devices. Attempting to access the site via a Windows machine will take you to a humorous “I’m a Mac-like” ads that inform users that the site is 0ff-limits.

Google’s Operating System represents, for most of open source lovers, their main hope in a Microsoft world that is now being invaded by Mac; and seems that insiders in Google are saying that Chrome OS will include a Remote Desktop Connection that will provide running locally normal PC applications.

Remote Desktop for most power and/or IT users represents the way of accessing a remote’s computer desktop by reaching it using an IP address; but is more than that. Using Remote Desktop protocol, users can access their applications, installed on a remote computer, without actually installing them locally.

This functionality, without an official announcement by Google, appeared in a Google forum; made by software designer inside the developing of Chrome: “We’re adding new capabilities all the time,” wrote Kačmarčík. “With this functionality (unofficially named ‘chromoting’), Chrome OS will not only be [a] great platform for running modern Web apps, but will also enable you to access legacy PC applications right within the browser.”

For me, almost anything representing legacy or an interoperability support sounds like a good idea; especially in today’s market when some are thinking that by being more restrictive they will win.

What do you think?

Bing has come into the search market with a bang offering users a unique way of surfing the internet. Recent rumors shared on the AppleInsider website state that Apple might be interested in offering another option other than Google when searching on their iPhone OS.

Currently the iPhone OS defaults to Google when you open Safari. Apparently Apple seeks to offer other alternatives to searching, perhaps looking to take away dependency on Google. According to the article, Apple is not dropping Google entirely, they seem to only want to make other options more visible. Also stated in the article, “Apple already provides an option to use Yahoo for web search in Safari, although that option is not obvious and requires visiting system settings to make the switch.”

Have Apple and Microsoft struck an alliance? It would appear so initially, but because Apple is already offering Yahoo, perhaps they will make Yahoo another prominent option. There’s a very long standing history in how the companies involved have been mixed into all this. Microsoft has been asking for Bing to be more prominent, Apple has integrated some of Microsoft’s mapping technology into their services, and Apple is not entirely happy with the dependency of some of their core apps on Google’s presence. It’s a long and drawn out history that the article does a great job detailing.

Personally I’m not a fan of Bing, I don’t see it becoming a huge factor on the OS as a search option, but we’d love to hear your thoughts. Are you happy just using Google on Safari when you go online, or do options like Yahoo and Bing make a better offering?

Apple seems to continue it’s ongoing trend with the midas touch. It’s not that touch tablets are anything new.Companies in the past have created Windows based touch pads that have been adopted by companies like UPS and FedEx. Personal Windows tablets have never really hit the level of critical mass that Apple seems to have hit with the release of the iPad on April 3rd.

Whether it’s the trendy fad, fancy marketing, or just millions of “fanboy” users, the iPad has definitely come out strong with 2 million units sold in 60 days. It took 28 days to sell the first million and it appears that in the same amount of time, it sold another million. With this ongoing trend, it will be interesting to see how things go further into the year. Just last week the iPad was released internationally in several markets. The numbers in those markets are too early to count, but it can only boost the already successful launch of this product.

To further strengthen the the use of the iPad, it’s been noted that the iPad has another 5,000 apps added to its already robust library. According to CNN, there is a total of 200,000 apps that are compatible with the iPhone, iTouch, and iPad. With lots of options, users will find ways to get their work done despite the functionality of a full laptop. Are you one of the 2 million units sold and if so, how are you functioning with it?

China is receiving Apple’s new toy and is expected, as in the rest of the world, that the iPad will be quite a hit there. But Apple will have a ferocious competitor: The iPed.

Oh no, I’m not misspelling, this one is called the iPed. And you can find it in Shenzhen, China available with a cost of U$S100, where also the iPad costs U$S536.

But that’s not all the differences between these two tablets. The iPed contains an Intel chip inside and Google’s operating system Android.

Let’s take a closer look to the product:

The box seems similar?

Wait… what I’m reading there…?

Oh, neither iPod nor iPad… iPed, of course

Mmm… the manual says APad… I’m a little confused now

This would be a great gift to get a friend excited, isn’t?

Mike Chambers, one of the most important persons inside Adobe and Flash development, posted about the iPhone compatibility. They are suspending indefinitely the development of Flash to work with iPhone.

Not only that, Chambers also says that they are going to focus their attention in the Android platform: “Personally, I am going to shift all of my mobile focus from iPhone to Android based devices (I am particularly interested in the Android based tablets coming out this year) and not focus on the iPhone stuff as much anymore.”

Adobe is definitely not happy regarding the treatment they’ve received from Apple, and Mike also has some comments about it:

“However, as developers for the iPhone have learned, if you want to develop for the iPhone you have to be prepared for Apple to reject or restrict your development at any time, and for seemingly any reason. “

“I think that the closed system that Apple is trying to create is bad for the industry, developers and ultimately consumers, and that is not something that I want to actively promote.”

“There have already been a couple of developers who have moved their Flash based content from the iPhone to Flash on Android (couple of examples below) and I expect that this is a trend we will be seeing more and more of.”

Clear enough?

Apple’s going to focus in HTML5, that’s probably the main reason of this dispute; but in the meanwhile I guess we are going to have to get use to those blue legos.

If you thought that the iPad was just a bigger version of the iPhone, then you are going to love this: Digitime expert says that Apple is preparing the iPad nano version to be launched in the first quarter of 2011.

This iPad model will be smaller than the actual version, with 5 or 7 inches (iPad: 9.7 – iPod Touch: 3.5 and iPhone 3GS 4.5 inches) and the cost is estimated below the U$S400.

The main reason for this release would be to convert Apple in its own competitor, pointing this smaller version of the iPad to people with more passive use of the device, people who don’t need an intensive text-input but more a reading kind of users (a new Kindle competition maybe?).

It doesn’t make sense to me though, having the iPhone available I don’t see much point on using possibly the same device as a tablet with just a few more features available.

What do you think?

As you know, the moment that Kindle appeared in the market, the e-readers are getting a lot of attention from companies and users. And the iPad is not an exception, there are a lot of projects involved to develop some interesting features to transform it in a Kindle competitor; but I guess none of them compared with Penguin project.

In this video you can check it out:

You’ll get some nice games for your kids, and an amazing coloring book options. Working with the human body in an anatomy section; a travelling guide; and also “Star Finder” an encyclopedia of the solar system and universe.

One of the strangest options is the “Vampire Academy” that represents a vampire novel that includes a live chat. Not sure if this one will make any difference.

Excited Apple fan boys/girls are surely getting ready to plunk down their hard earned money on a device that people just haven’t figured out if they really need or not. Nevertheless, the pre-order frenzy will surely create buzz and further articles on customer’s experience.

The iPad, which was recently announced by Apple, is supposed to fill the void between our laptop/desktop and our mobile device. Not sure if you really need one? No worries you’re not alone. But rest assured that thousands upon thousands of people will still order the device only to later realize if they really needed it or not.

According to the article the US wi-fi model is the first up, but according to Jobs presentation, the shipping date was still 60 days away. Could the pre-orders be taken this early? Sure they can, and fans will just have to wait to be the first on the block with their new device. What many looking out for is the release of previously unmentioned additions. It’s not unheard of for Apple to add something at the last minute, so fans are looking forward to that opportunity. Right now it’s not a guarantee to even happen, but Apple fans can dream.

Forgive the biblical format of the title, but an announcement of biblical proportions has been unleashed upon the public. Steve Jobs is authorizing a personal biography. After years of reading unauthorized books, years of wondering, years of rumors and speculation, the “official” book has been given the Steve Jobs blessing.

Is this going to be the honest look into his life that we want? Probably not, the unauthorized books will probably hold more truth then anything blessed by him, but for now, it’s an interesting topic.

Personally, as much of a fan of Apple I am, I also can’t deny the presence that Steve Jobs holds. While the company is definitely innovative, I see Steve Jobs walking down a hallway to the sound of the “Imperial March” from Star Wars, with guards on either side. Rumors of new hires being warned not to say “Hi” to Mr. Jobs or else they’ll be fired seem extreme, but not out of the realm of possibility. Do we really need an authorized book? Sometimes the mystique is better than the reality, but according to Macrumors.com we’ll be getting a look into his life sooner than we thought.

Unauthorized books have made him so mad in the past that he’s removed that entire publishing company’s line off of their stores shelves. Should be interesting to see just what he’ll allow us to understand, and perhaps we’ll become sympathetic to his processes.

There’s nothing like finding that application that helps get you through your day. Whether it’s a productivity application, or a business appliation, or a creative application, whether the need, it’s nice to know that there are alternatives to the costly pay versions. Sometimes freeware or shareware is just as good to get the job done and we turn to the internet for those downloads.

Now I admit in the past I had been going to Download.com, and found what I needed on there. But recently I was introduced to Softonic, and it’s equally as impressive as Download.com, but I’m just not a fan of the interface. I found it confusing, kinda clunky, and Download.com seems to have gotten the site structure of its heirarchy better laid out.

Still there’s tons of great apps on the site, which also features apps you should have. Sometimes you find apps that you didn’t now you needed, and that’s when you know that a site is bringing value to you. That value comes in what Softonic covers; Windows, Mac, Phones, Palm OS and Pocket PC’s. Seems like a healthy library, and growing everyday.

Give it a try and let us know which one you like better.

Gone are the days when a humble mobile phone and a stand alone PC were all the high profile office worker, self-employed person or whiz-kid had. Now, we all have at least three or four devices ranging from laptops, to cell phones, to smart phones to MP4 players. And the demand for them all to work together has never been higher. This is where syncing come into question. Syncing same-brand and compatible devices may be easy but using generic programs to sync items such as MacBooks and Windows Mobile smart phones that are from two opposing companies is no easy task.

SyncMate, which is mate by Eltima is available at the domain www.syn-mac.com holds the answer to syncing you Macintosh with several smart phones such as Windows mobile and Nokia S-Series phones.

The software is downloaded to your Mac and used to sync organisers, meida, contact info, e-mails and other such useful data. One user, Ann Clifford said:

“I am using SyncMate mainly to synchronize my Todos, my Google calendar and my contacts. SMS Manager Function is very useful too. Oh, almost forgot! The new iTunes synchronization is very cool. It syncs all my music, which is very important to me. SyncMate is a total ActiveSync for Mac replacement.”

The software is available here and I highly recommend it for the power-users with a Mac.
