Metacritic has just released their first iPhone app, Movie Finder. Movie Finder shows the latest mvoies and then providers users with the ability to see its metascore and basic information. The app is now available for free from the App Store.

In addition to offering reviews at a glance, the app lets users find theaters and show times anywhere in the U.S. And while standing in front of a theater, users can get a list of the movies playing there next along with each movie’s Metascore and user scores simply by holding up their iPhone in camera mode to the theater.

The app also provides SMS and Facebook sharing options, which makes it very easy to share with friends.

Here are a couple free iPhone alarm clock alternatives.

Nightstand Central Free – This ad-supported alarm clock reminds us of the Android operating system with its flip clock on top. We like its helpful weather report included just below the timepiece. It works when you have the phone sleeping and the screen is locked, but for that background alarm capability, you’ll be limited to just four different sounds with the free version.

Theme Clock Alarm – Swipe from side to side, and you’re offered a choice of a dozen different clock styles. Some of them are stylish. Others, not so much. Surprisingly, this app is not ad-supported, and you can wake to vibrate-only alarms without sounds. What’s the catch? Although you can lock your screen and put it in sleep mode, the app must be running for its alarm sounds to work. This one would work best in a dock overnight.

There has long been uncertainty on the exact process that it takes to get an application passed the Apple powers that be. Their ability to simply turn down an application from the approval process seems to be loosely defined, or undefined depending on how you see it. So it begs to question how one developer was able to get over 1,000 apps into the Apple store without raising any flags. (Molinker apps)

All eyes were directed to Chinese mobile app developer Molinker when a friend of a writer from the iPhoneography photoblog saw these obviously poorly done apps scoring very high in the user rating systems. Very few of the reviews offered a one or two star rating and it was a cause for concern. So highly were these apps thought of that Apple even selected one of the apps for the Staff Pick of the Week. This alone brings to mind questions on whether the apps are really selected by the staff or if there’s some undefined parameters that make an app “pick of the week”, as undefined as the process to get approved.

To raise alarms, two letters were sent to Apple’s marketing head, Phil Schiller, who by the second letter acknowledged that there was some misappropriation by the company Molinker within the Apple iTunes App store. The return letter simply stated that the developer had been ousted and that “gaming” of the system would not be tolerated. Not only was the developer ousted, but so were the 1,000+ apps affiliated with this developer (approx. 1% of apple’s app store).

So how does the app store move forward without even so much as making this example known to all other developers. Misappropriations such as exchanging unlock codes for positive reviews can still run rampant, and what if the misappropriation is not as easily defined the next as it was this time?

Should not surprise anyone, Microsoft is always looking to expand their market along with other technologies. So it won’t matter the popularity that could achieve Windows Phone or Windows Mobile, the company will most certain publish in March of 2010 the MSN and Bing’s app for iPhone.

Considering also that Microsoft released a time ago applications for BlackBerry and Verizon models. These new apps will not only offer the same and known functionality, like search and maps in Bing, they are planning to introduce new features. Nothing confirmed just yet.

What else should we expect for next year? Android’s app? Or even Chrome OS MSN Messenger version?

Fring video calls are currently available on Nokia X6, N97 mini, N97, 5800, N95 8G and N95 devices as well as Symbian, Android, Windows Mobile, J2ME and Linux devices, and the company plans to launch video calling on the iPhone (the VoIP app is already available on the iPhone, but it does not yet include video). Of course, while the VoIP protocol will mean you use less of your contracted minutes, it will burn through your mobile data connection; make sure you are in range of your Wireless router, or go for the unlimited bandwidth option if you’re going to rely on Fring to make calls.

DropBox has a very intuitive and easy-to-use interface, using your Mac, Linux or Windows client; or even using the web interface. You can simply synchronize your files everywhere; it doesn’t matter from which computer you are connecting. And now, it won’t matter if you are using your laptop, desktop or iPhone.

Some of the other features included are:

• Possibility to use public links for your files: Instead of using rapidshare, megaupload or any other file hosting; you can upload your files to DropBox in a public folder and share it with the community.
• Usability similar with Subversion: With the local client, you can store your files in your hard drive. And every time you put files in there, they are automatically synchronized.
• 2gb of storage.

All of us with an iPhone or iTouch know the addiction of downloading applications. For those of us with the 1-click purchase mode have probably found ourselves just clicking away before we realize we’ve spent some major money on what we think are useful applications.

For the rest of us that don’t have that luxury and are happy to play with free apps, perhaps this site is for you. AppGiveaway is a site that offers you promo codes to get iPhone apps for free or at deeply discounted prices. This is a great site to be introduced to apps that perhaps don’t get a lot of press, or get lost in the shuffle. The site introduces its readers to unique games, productivity apps, financial apps, etc.

Give the site a try and explore what they offer. I won’t say every app they offer promos for are worth it, but it’s a matter of introduction and taste, what works for me may not work for you, and vice versa.

Let’s take Twitter to another level now. Twitter gobbled up Summize and created Twitter.Search, and now users are able to find exactly what they want by typing in search terms. The search will highlight all the conversations and make them available to you, along with providing a list of the hottest trending issues at the moment. Well thanks to Summizer for the iPhone, this app does everything Twitter.Search does, only you don’t have to go to any URL. This useful app sits directly in your menu is quickly accessible to find quick information on what is being discussed.

Mustache Inc’s tightly packaged app is definitely made with the on-the-go user in mind, and easy enough for general users to pick up as well. While version 1.0 is currently focused on searching and trend watching, the update, pending approval from Apple, looks to offer more options making this powerful app much more useful. You can find this app for $4.99 which is a little steep compared to some of the other apps available, but for marketers, advertisers, business professionals, or avid users, the cost is minimal compared to the use that they are sure to find in Summizer.
