Im quite surprised that these applications are only hitting iOS at the moment, as they are very basic applications.

After the recent issues with the Playstation Network someone has actually make an iPhone application so you can tell if the Playstation Network is down or not.

Since the Playstation Network went back online this week, there has been a huge amount of new hacking attacks on the servers, thus Im sure this isnt going to be the last time we see it all go down.

Users will login with their Mozy account and they can access all the files they have backup using the client software. Opening the app shows you the names of any computers you’ve backed up. You tap on a computer to view your files.

The Mozy iPhone application runs off the same folder structure as the client, but it would have been nice to see the files I had backed up.

Users can view everything from Word documents to PDFs and music. You can also e-mail documents, photos, and other files and even post a photo directly to Facebook. To provide an extra layer of security, Mozy also lets you set up a pass code to open the app.

Metacritic has just released their first iPhone app, Movie Finder. Movie Finder shows the latest mvoies and then providers users with the ability to see its metascore and basic information. The app is now available for free from the App Store.

In addition to offering reviews at a glance, the app lets users find theaters and show times anywhere in the U.S. And while standing in front of a theater, users can get a list of the movies playing there next along with each movie’s Metascore and user scores simply by holding up their iPhone in camera mode to the theater.

The app also provides SMS and Facebook sharing options, which makes it very easy to share with friends.

Google has launched the official Google Translate iPhone application. The new app has all of the features of the web app, plus some significant new additions designed to improve your overall translation experience.

Speak to translate – The new app accepts voice input for 15 languages, and—just like the web app—you can translate a word or phrase into one of more than 50 languages. For voice input, just press the microphone icon next to the text box and say what you want to translate.

Listen to your translations – You can also listen to your translations spoken out loud in one of 23 different languages. This feature uses the same new speech synthesizer voices as the desktop version of Google Translate we introduced last month.

Full-screen modeAnother feature that might come in handy is the ability to easily enlarge the translated text to full-screen size. This way, it’s much easier to read the text on the screen, or show the translation to the person you are communicating with. Just tap on the zoom icon to quickly zoom in.

And the app also includes all of the major features of the web app, including the ability to view dictionary results for single words, access your starred translations and translation history even when offline, and support romanized text like Pinyin and Romaji.

You can download Google Translate now from the App Store globally. The app is available in all iOS supported languages, but you’ll need an iPhone or iPod touch iOS version 3 or later.

This shift brings them in line with services like Spotify that charge users for mobile access. For the price of a fancy coffee, users can continue listening to Last.fm on their mobile without commercials. And yes, scrobbling is still free.

However, it seems like another service that people wont be willing to pay for! I thought Last.fm really would have tried to become the Pandora of the UK.

Their standard model is a little inflexible, but for an extra $500 they’ll design you a custom skin, and you can add things like push notification (messages that will pop up on screen for a group targeted by e.g. location, age, gender) for additional fees. A relatively cheap and simple way to get a functional tool up on the app store, just watch the costs. You might even end up making some money out of your app. depending on how you want to serve it – Mobile Roadie are keen to impress on you just how powerful a platform the iPhone is… I wonder how many Apple shares the dev. team has?

Bandloop approaches the problem from the opposite angle, asking you to add a set of bands that you’re interested in, and then feeding you information on when they’re going to be where – a band based rather than a geography based approach. They also make a Strong Bad reference on their site, so they can’t be bad! This is another free app, supported by ads.

The Jambase app allows you to approach from either perspective, with the same current-location GPS functionality as Gigzee (although you can still put in a different area code if you want to know who’s playing elsewhere), and the ability to add favourite artists to a roster that will update a gig calendar for you. It also features music samples dragged down from LaLa.com, and links to ticket-purchasing sites, although this only really works for major artists.

The most pro-active (read laziness enabling) app in this field is iConcertCal, which will scan through your iPhone (or iTunes) and figure out who your favourite bands are based on the plays they’ve had from your catalogue, and then auto-generate a list of the gigs that they’re playing in your area. The plug in seems to work pretty well, but since it’s based on your iTunes list, you’re a bit stuffed if you use Spotify Premium or any other apps that bypass the iPod’s official-Apple-product contents.

Flightcaster.com has recently received $1.3 million dollars to help them develop and market a piece of software that will help avoid this situation: their service (currently only available on US domestic flights) runs a consistently (90% so far) accurate, real-time update on how late any given flight will be on arrival. Departures are harder to predict, due to the greater number of variables – did the luggage guys go on a smoke break, did Mr. Johnson in 26F check in online and then miss his ride to the airport, did a gentleman in a Djellaba walk past the terminal building, that kind of thing – but once an airplane is on the departure runway, Flightcaster uses data from:

• Bureau of Transportation Statistics
• FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center
• FlightStats
• National Weather Service

to predict and monitor flight progress, meaning that you’ll never have to orbit the arrivals terminal again. You can also download their software as an iPhone or Blackberry app, so you can (pull over and) check the flight on your way to the airport.

Basically, you set up the app by entering your home location. You can then enter in other locations such as where you work or where you’re going on holidays. Then, you can check schedules and status updates on trains so you won’t ever miss your train. The best feature on this app is by far the ‘next train home’ feature. By simply telling it your location it tells you at what time the next train leaves for your home station.

Well for the iPhone, a new app has been released which can pretty much do the job for you. It’s a business card reader so when a new client, solicitor, plumber or a pompous friends gives you their card all you have to do is take a snap of it. Then, this app will scan the card using its text recognition abilities and all of the contact info on the card will be uploaded to your address book under a new contact which the app also automatically creates.

Very handy.

The business card reader is really only recommended for the mobile networker who’ll be handed several cards in one outing. It costs $5.99 from the app store and is available right here.
