The internet has completely changed the way the modern human lives, works and communicates – but what if we turned it off?

Like the fabled imaginings of sci-fi movies, are we entering a new generation of technology that could potentially cause chaos with the way we live? Will Terminator like prophecies come true? Will the machines take over? Come-on, we need an answer! What type of capabilities will we have at our disposal in 20 years?

Just think of how far we’ve come, with regards to technology, in just two decades. We’ve vastly improved the motorcar to become cleaner, faster, safer and more intelligent. We’ve seen dial-up internet speeds become broadband, and now we’re entering the age of fibre-optic internet speed. We’ve seen the iPod, the introduction of the mobile phone as an entity, the birth of the Euro Fighter Typhoon; it’s been an intense and scarily quick change in the power of the technology we use every day. So, if all of a sudden, someone turned our beloved internet off, would we be too bothered? Well, simply put, yes!

On a daily basis we take for granted that we rely on the internet for so much instant information and answers to everyday questions. So much so that modern generations are seemingly unaware of the fact that such information also lies in print form in a public library.

It’s speculative to say that the younger generations would dislike any turn off the most, as the older generations who grew up with no internet could just go back to the old way of social networking – which, for the young ones reading, is meeting up, in person, and talking to each other in a verbal shared dialogue.

Social networking might be one thing, but there is a darker and more important concept to the internet – no, not pornography – but political conceptions. With the recent Wikileaks scandal causing untold embarrassment and shame upon our most famous and powerful political figures, could the world leaders decide on shutting the web down? The decision would be a brave one, but it is a way of controlling the masses, reducing political bias and blocking the bloggers.

We now think of the internet as we think of our car, home and electric – essential. It has become a fabric of life, our escape to another world and a way of keeping in touch with old friends – and looking at their photos to see if they’ve gone uglier. Just imagine all of that being taken away from you. You wake up tomorrow morning and you look at your iPhone to see what people are up to on Facebook but all you get is “no mobile internet service”. In a panic, you turn on your PC to find that either your modem is completely broken or someone has done the unthinkable and turned off the World Wide Web.

There would be worldwide riots, protest and unrest – similar to that in the middle-east at the moment. We would probably see many deaths, recessions in the majority of the western world and a drop off in industrial manufacturing. Many people would lose their jobs, homes and lives. It would be an absolute economic disaster.

However, as Bill Gates says: “It’s not that hard to shut the internet down if you have military power where you can tell people that’s what’s going to happen”…“Whenever you do something extraordinary like that you’re sort of showing people you’re afraid of the truth getting out, so it’s a very difficult tactic, but it can certainly be shut off.”

And if you think that actually turning the internet off would be difficult, think again…

All the government would have to do is ask the providers like Virgin, BT and Sky to turn them off and stop providing the service – that’s it! Just like that, every modem in the country would cease working. We would be without iTunes, Facebook, YouTube, pornography and Justin Beiber [– thank god].

Could you cope? Without trying it, we’ll never know, but one thing is sure, if that day ever presented itself, there would be a majority dislike to the decision, and it would be inevitable that heavy rioting and action would be taken by the public.

Think of the public as a collective and singular three-year old child who has just had its favourite toy taken from it – there would be hell to pay!

Boxee has just announced that the are planning on launching their own iPad application. The Boxee iPad application will be able to stream content between devices running its software. Thus, users will be able to watch movies and tv shows through the internet on their iPad via the Boxee set top box.

Boxee was going to adopt Apple’s Airplay technology into their box, but they have decided to create their own technology. The iPad app will launch very soon and will be completely compatible with the original iPad and Boxee version 1.1.

As you can see from the screenshot above, it takes note of what people are searching for in Google and Yahoo!. They also have Twitter monitored so you can find out what’s happening there too which is significant considering news spreads fastest on Twitter. Then, smaller sites such as the New York Times and Alexa are covered followed by smaller search engines.

The service is currently in public Beta and it will be interesting to see what the team comes up with once its ready for the full launch.

Since the iPad was officially unveiled over a week ago now, everyone been praising some of its aspects and slamming others. I know quite a few people who aren’t too pleased with paying hundreds of dollars for an “oversized iPad”. Regardless of what you think of the price, it won’t really matter for Austrians.

3, the popular mobile network, will be offering a 333 Euro ($455) discount on the iPad once you take out a data plan at thirty euro a month. We’re not too such exactly what the European price will be for the iPad, but judging from US prices, this discount means you could hand over fifty Euro on the day of purchase and then pay thirty Euro a month for the next two years. But that thirty Euro ain’t for nothing. You’ll be getting a portable broadband modem which will create a WiFi hotspot around you. Thus you can surf the net on your WiFi iPad wherever you are!

This deal isn’t too bad, particularly in the short run. However, as a warning to all our Austrian readers, I’d think long and hard about how much you really need an iPad both now and two years down the line, because once you’re in, you’re in.

Naturally the TV, being HD, offers up a full 1080p display. It comes in varying sizes ranging from 46-, 52-, or 60-inches with an LED backlit LCD screen. The two big ones for me is the integrated WIFI which opens up a lot of opportunities and the inclusion of an ambient light sensor is always nice for quick adjustments. The TV is also internet ready with its own set of proprietary widgets. I’d like to see these in action in the real world to see if it’s something people will actually use.

The Sony Bravia NX800 HDTV will retail at $2300 to $3500 so save your nickels and dimes and see if this TV is what you’re looking for in a full entertainment experience.

Self publish your work.

spent years collecting works on my personal sites that would work well in book format. The idea is to take out the middleman, publishers, and put your work in your hands by giving you the options you need to get your work out to the world. But it’s not just for writers, opportunities are abound for photographers as well who want to feature their work in magazine or calendar format.

Lulu has offered self publishing opportunities for all of us for many years now, and since its launch, has expanded it’s offerings. Take your work in one of many formats, books, ebooks, calendars, photo books, cookbooks, cd’s and dvd’s. Lulu also offers distribution services to get your book out in as many markets as possible, and the fees are minimal compared to what you’d get having to work with an agent and a publisher. I don’t want to take anything away from the traditional models that exist for publishing, they definitely have a place in the world of content publishing, but self publishing offers us so many new opportunities.

Adidas miCoach more advanced than Nike+?

Adidas has introduced their new miCoach ($70-$140) to an unsuspecting exercise crowd. The problem with Nike+ is that it was only functional with Apple products, and there are still many people who don’t like being tied down to proprietary hardware, so the miCoach definitely has a market to attract.

The miCoach offers “an audio feedback box, heart rate monitor, and stride sensor — or the MiCoach Zone — which pairs the heart rate sensor with a visual feedback wristband — to receive color-coded workout guidance that tells you when to speed up, slow down, hold steady, or end your workout,” according to the site. It also goes on to say that it’s a more advanced system then the Nike+. I’m not a miCoach owner, but I am a Nike+ owner and so far it’s has served it’s purpose for me, but I’m interested in seeing how the matching color-coded bracelet would change my workouts if I knew when to speed up my workouts and when to slow down.

The layout you might recognize from the Facebook app. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was their inspiration. I wouldn’t necessarily go out and call them copiers, only because with a mobile app there is only so much you can do, and if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Still, the similarity might work in its favor because users will be comfortable with the layout. What separates the old and new is the increased functions of being able to view and answer inbox messages, invite and accept others invitations, browse profiles, search profiles, and most importantly a new additions.

The new addition is the ability to connect with users in your immediate area using your iPhone. The “In Person” selection makes your iPhone a homing device for others in your area how are Linkedin users and whom you might want to connect with. A great piece of functionality for conferences and other large gatherings where you can exchange business cards, but not all cards come with a Linkedin profile attached. I used this from my apartment, and it picked up on a few people nearby. I’m not quite sure on the range, but it seems a pretty worthwhile addition to the lineup.

A more direct method to crowdsource.

More people are turning to the internet for their answers to questions like “why does this hurt?” to “what’s for dinner?”. Web and mobile apps are becoming the go to for much of our information, but all the information on the internet had to have been put there by someone. The disconnect to relationships comes when you simply read a blog post, listen to a podcast, or watch a vidcast, rather than interact with them directly. Would things be different if we could connect with someone in real time who was thinking the same thing you were, at the same time, or feeling the same way you do? Chances are we’re looking for someone to relate to us in some way and the “Anybody Out There” web app is a great way to get that conversation started.

Crowdsourcing information to questions has never been more direct. Sure you can use Twitter, but that’s like casting out a line and hoping for a bite. Did the person who respond qualify as the best ranked person to respond, or was it just someone in your thousands of followers. What the “Anybody Out There” app strives to do is using its language algorithm to calculate the best people to talk to depending on your question or topic. These recommendations are fed to you and it’s up to you to make the direct point of contact.

The app offers nothing more than a qualified connection, it’s the user experience that I find most interesting. So next time you want to cast your question or topic of discussion into the internet either, check out “Anybody Out There” and see if anyone is ready to talk about your thoughts and ideas.

AT&T customers have had enough and many are falling in line with a man called ‘Fake Steve’ is asking all iPhone users on the AT&T network in the US to choke the network on Friday at noon. Here’s what he want everyone to do.

“On Friday, December 18, at noon Pacific time, we will attempt to overwhelm the AT&T data network and bring it to its knees. The goal is to have every iPhone user (or as many as we can) turn on a data intensive app and run that app for one solid hour. Send the message to AT&T that we are sick of their substandard network and sick of their abusive comments. The idea is we’ll create a digital flash mob. We’re calling it in Operation Chokehold. There’s a lot of apps out there, both mobile and desktop, that use the Twitter API to make it more “functional” for power users. What’s a power user? Well if you’ve got more than one account on Twitter, have over 1000 friends, and like to have your posts link to other social networks where you have a community, then you are probably a power user.

In the race to be the most dominant desktop application for Twitter, TweetDeck is definitely one of the leading contenders. Having been around for about a year, TweetDeck has taken the Twitter experience to a whole new level. It’s integrating the use of multiple columns, and attaching itself to URL shorteners, photo posting apps like Twitpic, and the ability link to other network like Facebook, all under one app. But just recently TweetDeck has evolved again, and this time, making it even more useful for power users to extend their reach further into the social web.

Last week TweetDeck released an update that now allows you to link your messages to LinkedIn and MySpace, the option to Retweet the way you want, locating your friends, and the ability to integrate Twitter lists into your columns. If there ever was a center to the social universe, TweetDeck could very easily take that spot.

TweetDeck is an Adobe AIR desktop application compatible with several operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux. An Phone version was released on the 19th June 2009.

With content accessible on our mobile, it’s become more common for us to be productive with our mobile devices to get more work done. Cell phones and other mobile devices have become the digital leashes that collar us to work, but at the same time it also keeps us connected to life’s information flow. As we become a more connected community via social media tools, it’s always useful to hear how others have made it work for them.

Recently I was stuck on a prolonged trip where I could have done one of two things, sit and just let time pass, or find an effective way to keep what I do going. I opted for the latter and as a writer for various websites across the web, I found the magic combination that keeps what I do going even if I’m not on my laptop or desktop.

For starters I have a iPhone and I’ve set up my apps in such a way that I can now more easily stream line the writing process using apps that I’ve linked together because of how they work together. If there’s a Blackberry alternative out there, I’d love to hear how you keep your brand running even if you’re on the go.

Documents2: Is the app I use to write my article. I use this article specifically because when I write I can back up automatically to my Google Docs and send a copy via email if I choose, all without leaving the app. This makes backing up my work easy.

Safari: I use Safari to quickly grab a creative commons photo from Flickr or any other photo site. I save the photo to the device and make sure that I get all relevant information for attribution purposes.

PS Mobile: This free Photoshop tool is great for quick edits to photos like resizing or cropping on the go. I don’t look for this tool to do anything more than I know it’s capable of and save the photo and move on.

WordPress: Using the WordPress app I bring in my copy, insert photos, include attribution, and tag and label my post accordingly. With a press of the button my articles are posted and I move on to my next task.

The above process may seem like it take a lot of moving around from one app to another, and I admit at first it did take more time than I would have liked. But after making this part of your routine, you become faster at it, and grouping icons by purpose instead of type, like most people do, you can easily access your tools to ensure that your posts are published.

Tracking mentions online is a huge market that has yet to turn any profit. Still, there are a lot of sites out there that track mentions on Twitter, Facebook, various social sites, and a few blog sites as well. Knowing what trending topics are hot and when your name or brand is mentioned is important and becomes  a focal point of tracking your web presence.

Regator is both a web app and a mobile app that allows you to keep up with what is happening in the blogosphere without missing a beat. The unique addition of the mobile app ensures that you never miss a mention. They pay app ($1.99) is a functional addition to any mobile media person’s toolbox.

Regator does little to stop you from jumping right in. Search for keywords, browse the web from within Regator, search real time trends, and even set up a blog monitor for specific names and keywords for daily reports when those words are mentioned.

I also found the ability to favorite posts, entire blogs, and/or topics to be useful for when I needed to come back and read up more in depth later.

Regator definitely explores millions of posts thousands of the best sites out there. I found it an interesting tool for media, business, writing, and news professionals. But just about anyone can find a great use to keep up on their specific keyword choices or trending topics.

Axess.im is an amazingly intuitive site where just a little bit if knowledge can go a long way. It takes some general understanding of site design and coding, but the ease of being able to publish your content and even get a customized name attached to it seems to be where this web apps excels. Just going to the homepage of this site, I thought I was going to see something cheaply done with little follow through on return. I was surprised.

The site allows for original hand coding to be done and encourages you to preview your work. Don’t like the HTML coding window, then switch to standard view where you get what looks like an MS Word tab at the top with buttons to include various forms of media. This makes it extremely user friendly.

I find it surprising that templates are offered yet, thought it’s shared that they are coming soon. Nevertheless, with just text and media alone, you are able to quickly create a page that can be shared as soon as you hit publish. No messing with DNS changes, domain purchases, or email accounts. A web app like this would be useful in quickly sharing a resume, displaying artwork and videos for others to view, and creating a one stop shop for everyone to see what you do in a quick and dirty kind of way.

Miniclip offers up a bevy of game choices from quick classic gaming, seasonal gaming, puzzles, multi-player, and so much more. The deep archives of gaming goodness offer up a lot of choices that seem to fill the time quite nicely.  Concurrently, the site claims to be the largest gaming site in the world, and looking at the long list of games, they just might be right.

A total of 50 million gamers come to this site, started only 8 years ago, it has reached mass popularity and interest worldwide forcing the developers to translate the site into over a dozen languages. The archive is over 450 games deep with two new games added every week which is sure to keep the list fresh, and returning gamers interest piqued.

It’s the holidays, Cyber-Monday is tomorrow, Black Friday is behind us, yetpeople just can’t seem to have enough stuff. If that’s you, and you’ve scoured the likes of MySimon, and various online store sites, then perhaps you’d be interested in finding what you want via a shopping search site called Milo.

Milo is nothing particularly fascinating, nor did I find it interesting. Now perhaps there’s something magical under the hood, but I didn’t see it. I do find their slogan fairly interesting, “Find it Local, Get it Now.” I only wish were the truth.

I did a quick search for my wife on some sewing equipment she needs and it came up with nothing. Now either what she wants does not exist, or their database is not as deep as one would think, or there just simply isn’t one locally. I’m know it’s not not the first one, and the last one would be a lie because I’ve seen them in various stores already.

Just another site to search for items that crawl the same store and online sites that others do does not interest me. Now if there was a way it could crawl local community sites, Craigslist, Freecycle, and any other local posting communities, now that would be an interesting hybrid.

Until then Milo is not even a blip on my personal radar, but might be what you’re looking for if you’re looking for something new.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the results are given in the form of a bar chart with positive,negative and ‘don’t care’ categories. According to their calculations, the internet likes peanut butter very much.

Your also given a random tweet by someone who mentions the subject.

This app is powered by the big three search engines; Google, Yahoo and Bing. And then Twitter lobbed onto the side for the ‘real time’ feel. Over all, this is a fun little app which may actually have a useful side if you want to see how search engines regard a particular subject. Check it out here.

I’m a firm believer of using multiple forms of storage for redundancy and access requirements. I’ve got an account on Zumodrive, Box.net, and Dropbox, each of them for different needs and clients, but I also have two external drives that I back up my main system to, but they are all physical drives that require a direct connection to my computer. Now’s the time to cut those wires and Imation has the answer.

The Imation Pro WX Wireless USB Hard Drive cuts the cords and allows you to store your data from up to 30 ft. away. I at first scoffed at this considering that it did little for me if I’m trying to access my data remotely, but I soon saw uses for this if I’m on my laptop.

Sitting at home and backing up data on your laptop no longer requires a direct connection. If I’m on my couch, and the wireless hard drive is on, I can simply use the USB connection to send data straight to the external.

Personally that’s great, but I’m still a firm believer of the cloud since I don’t want all the data stored locally, but will need access to it on matter where I am. But, if you’re someone who simply uses their computers at home, perhaps this is an option, if you’ve got the money to drop for it ($450).

But if you access all your data from home, a more cost effective external might suffice for now.

It’s not uncommon to find communities where apathy has set in and people just don’t seem to care. Alternatively there are communities where the inhabitants take their voice to the streets, airwaves, online, anywhere that can give them a platform to be heard. CitySourced.com is now a way for you to take your civic engagement online, but more than that, you can be mobile and capture your concerns the moment they become a factor.

CitySourced.com offers users an iPhone app and a web app that allows users to report civil issues of serious concern (potholes, graffiti, trash, snow removal, etc.). Their mobile app is simple and easy to use and allows you to capture media and send your concerns straight to City Hall.

It’s meant as a positive collaboration tool between the community and the powers that be to enact change, and develop stronger ties with their constituency. It’s also an innovative approach to engage a new generation in taking part and sharing their concern in a way that is easy for them by using devices they already likely own.

Not For Tourists (NFT) maps have come to the iPhone, and mobile users rejoice. NFT maps offer the user more than just directions, it offers detailed neighborhood descriptions, thousands of essential listings, customizable maps for return trips, and editorialized commentary on things you need to know when you get there. It’s the map that talks back…but in a good way.

Currently New York, San Francisco, London, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. are mapped out, with Seattle, Boston, Philidelphia, and Miami being added soon. Putting these maps together takes time, but considering the pace at which they are adding, it won’t be long that the maps themselves will include more international and more major-minor cities.

The iPhone app comes with a $4.99 price tag, but considering the information you’re getting in these maps, it’s worth it. The price for not having to fold and refold a map is worth the price of admission alone. Explore these cities in a whole new way and let us know what you think!
