Speed Dial 0.9.5.8 (download) is the most robust of the four add-ons we’re looking at today. It’s highly customizable, offering the deep range of customizations that come with the best Firefox add-ons. Among the multitude of choices is the option to control whether it opens in new tabs or new windows; set the number of “dials,” create dial groups and hook them to hot key combinations for quick launching; and customize the look of each dial’s thumbnail.

Tweetdeck has just released their web application in the Chrome Web store. Now any user can access Tweetdeck from within their Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer and Opera browser.

According to a blog post from TweetDeck, the new Web App, which requires no downloads, is already working on Chrome, Firefox 3.6, Firefox 4 and Safari with compatible versions arriving soon for IE9 and Opera.

If you’d like to try your luck at receiving a beta invitation you can visit: http://www.tweetdeck.com/webbeta. You’ll need to know your browser name and version number, then again if you don’t know how to find those you shouldn’t be in a technology based beta program to begin with.

After recent installation of firefox 4 I am getting the following error message

This Browser does not support WebGL

Solution

First you need to install the following package

sudo apt-get install libosmesa6

After installing above package open your browser and type about:config address bar and search for webgl.osmesalib now you need to add string type as /usr/lib/libOSMesa.so.6

Finall restart your firefox

You can check if webgl is working or not go to https://demos.mozilla.org/en-US/ and play 360° Video.

Firefox 4 was launched yesterday and in the first 24 hours there was more than 6 million downloads. This compared to when Microsoft launched IE 9 which only received 2.35 million downloads in the first 24 hours.

We have extensively covered Firefox 4 here on Crenk:

Mozilla Release Firefox 4 Beta 10: But Developers Want Firefox 5 to Start

It seems as though Firefox 4 is going to grow into becoming the second largest browser on the internet, or maybe even the largest! At the moment in the browser stakes Internet Explorer is still the largest browser, but Firefox is quickly catch, while Chrome is slowly gaining.

Here is the official roadmap for Firefox.

Firefox 5 will absorb the Account Manager and F1 Simple Sharing add-ons to become built-in features. It looks like Windows 7 64-bit will be officially supported with FF5, too.

Firefox 6 will have a focus on the Web applications framework, JavaScript optimizations, and support for OS X 10.7. For Web applications, some missing pieces of CSS3 and HTML5 will be added to Gecko, the rendering engine.

Firefox 7 feature list is less clear. Electrolysis (splitting everything into separate processes) and changes to XBL support are mentioned, but nothing certain.

There seems to be a very big emphasis on the responsiveness and user interface within Firefox.

Microsoft will be hosting a press even in the US on February 10th to announce the launch of Internet Explorer 9.

Internet Explorer 9 is being seen as an extremely strong product, even more so for users with Windows 7 where it allows individual websites to be pinned to the Start Menu and Windows TaskBar. Any website pinned to the TaskBar can have custom jumplists with only a small amount of added code.

IE9 is not a browser for people who like plug-ins and browser add-ons. In fact the beta version will nag you to remove them in order to have the software working at its fastest. It is definitely a very fast browser and stands up well against its main rival, Google Chrome.

Do you think Internet Explorer can really compete with Chrome and Firefox or is it just a waste of time?

The add-on is called (or was) Mozilla Sniffer, which it was uploaded on June 6th to the official add-on site from Mozilla. And it was downloaded by 1800 users and 334 had this add-on active. The behavior of this add-on apparently took all of the private browsing data from users (like user names and passwords), and send it to a remote site.

Since Mozilla blacklisted this add-on; all of those who had it working should see this feature disabled from their browsers.

Mozilla also makes a contradictory statement about this situation:

“Mozilla Sniffer was not developed by Mozilla, and it was not reviewed by Mozilla. The add-on was in an experimental state, and all users that installed it should have seen a warning indicating it is unreviewed. Unreviewed add-ons are scanned for known viruses, trojans, and other malware, but some types of malicious behavior can only be detected in a code review.”

But later in the same article:

“Having unreviewed add-ons exposed to the public, even with low visibility, has been previously identified as an attack vector for hackers. For this reason, we’re already working on implementing a new security model for addons.mozilla.org that will require all add-ons to be code-reviewed before they are discoverable in the site”.

Damn right you’ll be reviewing those add-ons! If you are publishing add-ons, features and options for your product within your site, you should be aware there’s a responsibility behind it.

Mozilla team released a new Firefox version, the 3.6.4, with an interesting milestone: Tab crash protection, preventing your browser from crashing when there’s an error.

Since forever Internet browsers had tons of problems accessing more badly design complex web apps, and the reason always have resided in the plugins used: Adobe Flash, Shockwave, Silverlight and several other that are present in almost any browser session; but now Mozilla Firefox created for their first time in history a version which will prevent the entire browser from crashing when there’s a plugin problem.

If there’s a crash generated by a web site, let’s say using Flash, the tab generating that problem will be reloaded without stopping any other tab or the browser. Besides this update, the new version does not bring us many differences, check the complete changes here.

And you can download directly the latest Mozilla Firefox version from here.

Two years ago I wrote an article on the major updates made to the Flock browser and the impact it would have on social search

Flock, the social browser, is not built on Chrome.

and browsing. Since then Flock, the social browser, has always been that fringe browser that a few people used but didn’t grab the audience it was hoping for. What did help Flock was the fact that it was built on the Firefox browser framework which made it easy to develop for since it was open source. The Flock browser allowed for many unique plug-ins very similar to Firefox, thus offering a seamless user interactive experience with the added bonus of social networking.

This week a huge announcement was made that Flock was leaving the Firefox backbone and moving to Chrome. Touted as a social browser there is definitely something to love about it, but does it really know where it wants to go? The interface has undergone a drastic overhaul moving away from the complex menus and tabs and moving more towards a simple interface with fully customizable group and friend options.

In a world where social platforms like Tweetdeck, Seesmic, and Hootsuite have been integrated into desktops and/or browsers, it feels like Flock is still running too many steps behind. Has Flock lost its luster? Perhaps, but there’s nothing wrong with reinventing yourself.

Mozilla has been known as a very safe browser as compared to its old enemy, Internet Explorer. In fact, many people used it for just that reason. So the last thing Mozilla needed was reports of Malware in two ad-ons which were available for download from their website.

“Two add-ons in the experimental section of addons.mozilla.org were found to be containing malware,” Mozilla said on its security blog. “These were not originally detected with the anti-malware scanning tools that we have been using. We have since increased the number of scanning tools, and will be taking additional steps to minimize the risk of further incidents.

It is thought that well in excess of 4,000 downloads of the ad-ons have taken place since they were first released in September. So are you one of the thousands of people who inadvertently infected their own machines? Well if you downloaded Sothink 4.0 and all versions of Master Filer then there’s a good chance you are. These installed Win32.LdPinch.gen and Win32.Bitfrose.32.Bitfrose Trojan respectively. So if you have downloaded these, I suggest running a scan of your system ASAP.

Firefox plugins are extremely useful. I’ve made the switch to Google Chrome as an experiment to see if I can live without the plugins, but I find myself opening up a second browser from time to time because the plugins are just so useful. I for one love capturing video from sites for a variety of reasons. It’s not always easy, especially if it’s a Flash embed, you’ll more than likely end up having to remember the URL or bookmark it in order to come back to it.

Well for those of you who have not been made aware of some of Firefox’s handy plugins to pull videos from the sites you visit, Crenk is sharing the top four plugins we think you’ll want to use in 2010 to get the videos you need.

Flashgot

This is the mother load in terms of what you can capture on sites. Not only can you capture videos from the site, but you’ll also get photos, and audio files. It’s not always the most user friendly plugin out there, but when you need to mass download content from a site, this plugin is hard to beat. I include it only because it’s so versatile, but the rest are going to be straight video downloaders.

Ant.com Video Downloader

This unique downloader is one that I just plugged into my browser last week. What I like about it is that I’ve yet to come across a site it can’t strip the video from. I surf a lot of sites and not everything is posted on YouTube so we’re not sharing only YouTube plugins only because we figure our audience wants something a little more diverse. Ant.com definitely falls into the diverse category, not only offering you the ability to download but also the ability to instantly watch what you download in their built in video player. It’s a nice way to make sure you got what you wanted without having to dig into the folders on your system.

Flash Video Downloader

This no nonsense downloader claims to be able to download from 200+ sites. While other plugins simply mention that it’s rare when their plugin does not download videos, at least this one gives you a good idea of how many sites it’s been put up against. Most of us, being creatures of habit, will explore the same video sites over and over again, so once we know it works on those particular sites, we’re golden. The plugin pulls from sites such as YouTube, Dailymotion, Break, and more, but it also has the power to pull mp3′s, mp4′s, and flash games.

Download Flash and Video

A nice combo in this plugin. You get the ability to capture movies, but also capture that Flash video that was once unattainable due to the format. This particular plugin takes out the complexities by making it easy as one click. With one click you’re downloading content from popular video sites, but you also have the ability to capture games, much like the Flash Video Downloader above.

While it has the core functions it lacks in terms of productivity and extra features which could be so easily added.

A great ad-on for Chrome and Firefox called FlyMonkey pretty much fixes all of that. Below, you can see a screenshot of my Twitter with three columns, each serving it own purpose. This is done by adding features to your Twitter page (via a red ‘+’ sign above your screen). You can add extra columns for DMs, replies, mentions and an arsenal of different options.

They also integrated the Bit.ly URL shortener and Twitpic into Twitter. As you are typing a tweet, two options appear below called ‘Photo’ and ‘URL Shortener’. I found these very handy indeed.

So if you want to change your Twitter experience but don’t fancy moving to a third-party alternative, get FlyMonkey.

Firefox is the crown jewel when it comes to extension friendly browsers. In the beginning IE could not compare, but more recently other browsers have started to adapt to extensions, but Firefox is by far the leader in this field. Many of us have tried to switch to other browsers like Chrome, but we felt naked with out the extensions. Personally it was a hard transition for me, but over time I’m getting used to it.

Most recently I’ve come across an unusual extension that is easily overlooked but the functionality is priceless, especially for those of us that work in multiple accounts of the same web applications. Multifox is a handy extension that allows for each window to act independently of the other. So those of you with multiple Gmail accounts can access all of your accounts without having to login and logout of each one. The necessity for something like this has been a long time coming, and this extension saves a lot of trouble and time.

Example of multiple profile identities.

Some of the added bonuses include:

Logins are preserved when you close windows, including quitting

The identity profile of each window is preserved even on a restore

Windows start the profile count with “2″; it considers “1″ the original parent window

The ability to assign identity profiles to each of your windows is definitely a bonus that once again attracts people to the Firefox browser. Do you know of other browsers that have attempted to manage such functionality? If so, let us know in the comments section.

In the battle over email application supremacy, Thunderbird has been one of the most highly developed for web application next to Google’s Gmail. Consistently we’re treated to new releases, updates, and efforts to make the user experience more comfortable and seamless with other email providers as it works to be the catch all for all of our digital communication. Most recently Thunderbird introduced a bevy of plug-ins over the summer that increased the usability of the application, but also made it more fun. Millions of dedicated Thunderbird users keep this email client in constant development and whats being released this week is no exception.

This open source email client created from the team out of Mozilla Messaging has made this email client accessible in over 50 languages and has recently announced over 2,000 updates. Some of these updates are very visible, others work behind the scenes, but there is no doubt that these developers are working hard for the dedicated users who rely on this app as their primary email application.

The biggest change is the user’s ability to search. The refined search allows you to find your email by keyword, sender, topic, and time frame, narrowing down the returns you get. Pin-pointing emails can be difficult, but this new search feature is sure to be a win. Paired with the search function is the ability to work multiple open tabs inside the email client, similar to the Firefox tabbing system. This allows users to keep multiple emails or folders open as they move from message to message.

And these are just a few of the benefits for the new Thunderbird. Be sure to check out Thunderbird 2 or the new release candidate for Thunderbird 3.

“Well, yeah, I know that” you might say “those are called magnet links”. Yes, it is true, magnet links exists already; and they don’t use the .torrent file to download, they use DHT protocol. But unfortunately, magnet links are not so easy to find; even though there are some popular clients (like Vuze and uTorrent) that already support magnetized links.

But now, you can find those very easy with the Firefox Add-on Magnetiser. You can install it, look for the Torrent that you want to download, click on magnetise, select the torrent client, and your download will start.

One small consideration though, the Add-On it is not officially out just yet (officially meaning that you can download it directly from Mozilla site); but you can download this add-on from here (just drag-n-drop the .xpi file intro Firefox.

Even though all the rumors said that we were going to have an official beta of Firefox 3.6, as we’ve discussed earlier, Mozilla will be releasing a 3.6 build, but as an early beta.

This “test build”, that should contain several bugs, will be a small preview of the real 3.6 beta that will be available to the public on October 21st (yes, one day before Windows 7 official release to the public). To take a nice preview of what’s coming in 3.6, you can access Mozilla FTP and download the build.

As we’ve said earlier, Firefox 3.6 (codename Namoroka) won’t bring us big changes, the features that you’ll find here:

Lightweight themes with Vista-like interface.

Improvements in TraceMonkey JavaScript engine

Bookmark synchronization

Optimized session restore feature.

Enhanced page rendering.

New additions for CSS.

Previews of tabs

We’ll have to wait for 3.7 to expect major differences.

Mozilla team is working really hard on brainstorming the idea and design of Firefox 3.7 (currently in 3.5, 3.6 it’s just around the corner). What’s the main idea? Hide the Menu bar and use a very similar look-n-feel of Office 2007/Office 2010 Ribbon.

They are using their Wiki to give us some of the advances made so far, the ideas floating in the air and of course receive feedback from most of the Mozilla lovers (and non-lovers as well, why not?). And here are the ideas that they have so far:

Embracing Glass: Toolbar and Tabs using Glass. Raised translucent buttons that are slightly glossy to meld with the toolbar. Raised 3D look to achieve tactile “feel”.

Neutral Tones: Overall neutral color scheme that can transition among platforms. Can remain attractive and slick without fighting for focus from web content.

Hiding the Menu Bar: Hiding the menubar by default (on Vista/7) allows us to use Glass, free up vertical space and retain platform consistency.

Page and Tools Buttons: Condense and trim existing menu structure into two buttons “Page” and “Tools”. Similar to Safari and Chrome.

Combine Stop/Reload: Combine Stop and Reload into one button. Reduces visual “clutter” and combines two buttons that have mutually exclusive functionality.

Home Button/Tab: Remove “Home” Button from default toolbar. Move functionality to a “Home Tab” containing your homepage.

More info: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Sprints/Windows_Theme_Revamp/Direction_and_Feedback

Personally I think those are very nice and significant changes. Office, Vista and 7 seems that they are setting the standards of any UI (no surprise there, Windows will still be the world’s main OS for a few years more). But the good news is that Mozilla it is also trying to establish browsers standards, like the “Page and Tools Buttons” that is a common feature in Safari and Chrome.

And also the “Combine Stop/Reload” feature it is something that I’ve been waiting to see in Firefox for a long time. I know, it’s a very tiny thing, but don’t you love having the same functionality in different browsers?

And what are the other changes that you would include?

Google are under the spotlight concerning security in their upcoming Google Chrome OS and Norton 2010 is turning heads. Now, Mozilla Firefox is to receive an update (3.0.12) which will close several major security loop holes in their popular browser.

“We strongly recommend that all Firefox 3.0.x users upgrade to this latest release,” Mozilla said on its developer blog. “If you already have Firefox 3, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting ‘Check for Updates…’ from the Help menu.”

It is recommended that users download the update so that they remain secure online. Using credit cards and even just keeping your browsing habits safe is a difficult task these days so the last thing you want is a browser that lets unsavoury programs or people peer into your bank account.

However, this will be one of the last, if not the last update for the browser. As of January 2010, no more updates will be made available to users of the 3.0.’X’ series as Mozilla try to pedal their newest browser, Firefox 3.5 to users.

Within the site, you will find several very interesting add-ons and plug-ins to use with Mozilla Firefox. Including the Top-50 most viewed and downloaded projects.

On this list you’ll find very, very useful tools that you can install to improve your browsing experience: Integration with Thunderbird, FTP client, autocopy highlighted text, proxy configurations, RSS reader, etc etc.

Again, another open source project that shows a lot of maturity, adding value and constant improvement. Cheers to that
