Google to Launch Nexus One in India

Google’s Nexus One smartphone is already being sold in different locations around the world, but so far not in India. It has now been reported that Google is planning a launch of a ’scaled down’ version of the Nexus One for the Indian market.

Currently details havent been release, but im sure the price would hopefully reflect the market and also the specs. There is a very big mobile phone market in India which is dominated by Nokia and Blackberry.

The original Nexus One features 5 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen, 512MB Flash along with a 4GB microSD slot, video recording at 20 frames per second and numerous Google services such as Gmail, Google Search etc.

For all that’s in the air for now, a report suggests that the new Nexus One for India will have a 3.7 inch AMOLED touch screen and Snapdragon processor but with a downgraded memory and Camera. Now, let’s wait and watch if Google really makes a hit on this one.

Worlds Largest Solar Powered Boat

PlanetSolar is the world’s largest solar powered boat. The boat itself is a catamaran that measures 101ft long, 49ft wide and is designed to reach a top speed of 15 knots (17 mph). It is also supposed to be able to carry 50 passengers.

Power wise the PlanetSolar gets all its running power from 5,381 sq ft of photovoltaic solar cells which will be used in a planned trip around the world in 2011. Until then here’s a few images to give you an idea of the size of this beast.

Verizon and the NFL Will Stream All NFL Games Next Season onto Mobile Phones

The National Football League and Verizon Wireless has partnered with a mobile distribution deal that will bring live NFL games onto phones at the start of next season.

The paid service will work on BlackBerrys and Android phones. Verizon hasn’t set prices for service, but an announcement is expected in weeks.

More from the WSJ: The deal marks a significant shift in strategy for the NFL, which has never before allowed mobile access to its games on Sunday afternoons. Doing so was long considered by broadcasters to be a threat to the NFL’s golden goose—its Sunday afternoon broadcasts that generate some $1.4 billion in license fees from News Corp.’s Fox and CBS Corp’s. CBS, whose executives have said they will keep a close eye on the impact of mobile distribution on their ratings.

Verizon’s four-year deal, which they took over from Sprint, is reportedly worth about $720 million.

Bill Gates’ New Website The Gates Notes Runs on a Linux Server

It has been reported over at Techcrunch that Bill Gates’ new site The Gates Notes, was running on a Linux-powered server. This would be ironic since Gates is of course the founder of Microsoft, which is Linux’s biggest competitor in the server market. It would be the equivalent of catching Gates or CEO Steve Ballmer being caught using (and not just signing) a MacBook at a conference.

A quick search on Netcraft shows that thegatesreport.com sure enough looks to be running on the Linux OS. But wait. The results also say that web server is Microsoft-IIS/7.0. That doesn’t sound right, so what gives? Well, it turns out that because Gates is using Akamai to mirror his sites’ content in the event of massive traffic (or more specifically, something like a DDoS attack), this data is being filtered through there. Akamai uses Linux for its servers, so that’s what OS is being passed back to Netcraft. But at the same time, to make things more confusing, the Akamai servers are still passing back the correct server header for Gates’ site: Microsoft-IIS/7.0.

How do I know this? Because the same thing happened in 2003 when it was humorously, but erroneously reported that Microsoft was using Linux servers to run microsoft.com. In fact, the same thing was going on: Microsoft was routing its traffic through Akamai, which again, runs Linux boxes. Microsoft has since apparently changed to its own servers since then so that they now correctly return Windows Server 2003 as their OS. That is likely what The Gates Report is running on as well given the Microsoft-IIS/7.0 web servers.

So, you all seen it, Apple released their hot product for this year: iPad Tablet. I bet you’ve seen the video, the Steve Jobs keynote but it seems like a bit hard to remember all of the facts.

Here are some of the facts that you should know, including reviewing some cons that we’ve seen so far. :

Skype Is By Far The Worlds Largest Provider of International Calls

Skype has seen its share of international calling minutes jump to 12% in 2009 according to TeleGeography. According to teh TeleGeography report there were a total of 406 billion international minutes in 2009, and Skype accounted for a staggering 54 billion by Skype-to-Skype calls.

TeleGeography says international call volume from telephones has grown at an annual rate of 15 percent over the past 25 years, but that growth has been slowing for the past few years. In the past two years, specifically, international telephone traffic annual growth has reportedly slowed to a mere 8 percent, growing from 376 billion minutes in 2008 to an estimated 406 billion minutes last year.

TeleGeography analyst Stephan Beckert refers to Skype’s estimated volume of traffic as “tremendous” and goes on to say that Skype is now by far the largest provider of cross-border communications in the world.

The Flip camcorder has been very popular in the last few years, mainly because it so easy to shoot videos. However, watching HDTV has been very difficult when checking out your Flip footage. Flip (owned by Cisco) has created FlipShare TV, a three-piece media bridge to wirelessly transmit your footage from your PC or Mac to your HDTV – without a home network.

FlipShare TV jacks straight into your HDTV and then you just need to plugin your USB key which is pre-configured to connect wirelessly, creating a private Flip network. Once you’ve saved your Flip footage to your PC or Mac, you use the remote to access and watch it on your HDTV.

Currently costing $150 FlipShare TV it seems to be quite affordable and it solves a problem that a lot of Flip users all over the world already have.

GrooveMaker is a new Electro and Drum and Bass app that helps musicians to create their own music. The interface itself is pretty impressive and looks much like your portable DJ Box, with 8 stereo loop tracks and a huge library of numerous drum beats, effects and lines to make your remix ever more groovy. This application seems great for the average person who wants to have a little fun and make some cool beats, but this app just isnt professional enough to actually be used as a commercial tool.

Renault Zoe: Electric Car Which Is More Like a Spa Treatment Than a Car

Renault have yet another crazy concept car. This time its the new Renault Zoe Z.E, which seems more like a luxury driving option than a real car.

Its reported that the engineering focus is on the car’s climate control system, which has an electric diffuser built right in, capable of spreading specialty oils around the cabin.

Renault’s Zoe may not be just a concept, either, as the company is hinting that the electric car could see production as early as 2012.

Cities XL on Mac: Free Download of Popular Sim Cities Game

Cities XL is from a French company who thought they would bring out their own take on Sim Cities.

Sadly though they haven’t developed a Mac version of the game, and at the time of writing don’t intend on creating one. You could set up a bootcamp partition and run Cities XL via Windows, but well…I’d rather not have to boot out of OS X to play the game.

Several hours later I have Cities XL running on my 13″ Macbook Pro without using bootcamp or running something like Parallels. Here’s how.

Downloads

I should note that I purchased the download via Steam because the Cities XL site’s purchasing section wasn’t working at the time. These instructions should work fine with a standard install.

You’ll also need to download the latest version of Darwine here.

Installation

Install Darwine as would any normal program.

From the dropdown menu in Darwine (top right hand side of the screen) select Winetricks. In Winetricks install Direct X 9, MS .NET 2.0 and MS Visual C++ 2008 libraries. If Direct X 9 doesn’t install, don’t worry too much because the game will attempt to install it when it is setting itself up. If you have ongoing problems though, grab Direct X 9 from Microsoft direct and try running it.

Install Cities XL.

I had a problem with graphics, although being on a low end Macbook Pro might have had more to do with it. If you get a popup about failure to deal with screen resolution (or similar) the way around it is to change the settings in Wine to “emulate a virtual desktop” (Wine Configuration/ Graphics.) You will need to restart Wine + X11 for the change to take place.

The game itself: not bad, although the online component is over priced and underwhelming so far

While you can already watch your favorite British TV programs on your iPhone using the BBC iPlayer service from their website, it looks like the BBC are developing an iPhone App which should bring a wider range of new BBC iPlayer services to the iPhone.

The new BBC iPlayer app even could feature a download option, which would allow you to download your favorite TV show directly to your iPhone. That way you could watch it whenever you want. Some other features include the ability to watch live TV. There’s nothing official from the BBC yet on when the app will be available.

Improve Your Aim At The Urinal With iPhone App

Most guys have been in the situation where they have way too much alcohol, it’s 2 am and your bladder feels like it is going to explode any second. That’s when you head to the bathroom and hope your aim is good enough even though you can’t even see. There’s is even an iPhone app for that.

Now, you can relive that experience (minus the alcohol) anywhere with a new iPhone app. It’s called ‘iPeePee,’ and it’s not a joke, according to Pocket Gamer. The premise is pretty straightforward. You play a drunk guy trying to pee in the appropriate location. Unlike real life, your reward isn’t dry pants or maintaining some dignity; it’s a high score.

It’s a wonder this app was approved by Apple, but apparently, urine is okay with the App Store overseers. There’s no doubt ‘iPeePee’ will be a hit with the college crowd (as would any apps involving boobs and booty), especially since it costs a mere $.99. Music Video Site Vevo To Launch on December 8th

Vevo has to be one of the most anticipated launches of the year and it is all set to go live on December 8th. The source is the Vevo twitter account. The announcement comes a day after Hulu said it too would make a foray into the music video space, with a deal to put up some music videos from EMI on its site.

If you have been living under a rock for the past 6 months, then Vevo is a new music video joint venture between the major record labels and YouTube. At launch the site will include music from Sony and Universal. This is a big move because the most popular sites at the moment on YouTube are the music video channels. Vevo allows YouTube to make even larger revenues because its a lot easier to place advertising against a quality peice of content like a music video, instead of the user generated content on its normal site.

The Pirate Bay Closing Their Torrent Tracker for Good

The big news this morning is that the Pirate Bay is closing down their torrent tracker for good. After launching the torrent tracker back in 2003 it quickly became one of the worlds largest Bittorrent trackers on the Internet, with some 25 million peers using the service. The Pirate Bay was launched by a few friends in Sweden and was never supposed to turn into a business, and never really did (probably the ultimate open source project).

Despite this success, The Pirate Bay operators today decided to pull the plug and close down the tracker permanently. The evolution of the BitTorrent protocol has made trackers redundant they say, as BitTorrent downloads work well with trackerless solutions such as DHT and PEX.

“Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well,” the Pirate Bay crew write on their blog.

Additionally, Torrentfreak has learned that The Pirate Bay operators are talking to other Bittorrent site ownwers to encourage them to follow suit and completely ditch torrents in the future. BitTorrent has reached a point where trackers and torrents are no longer needed to download files successfully. Supported by all of the major BitTorrent clients, DHT and PEX can handle the transfers and Magnet links can easily replace traditional torrent files.

There are still other services for users who dont want to go trackerless just yet, which include OpenBitTorrent and PublicBitTorrent.

Its really sad to see the end of this famous tracker, however times change and technology moves on, and all credit to The Pirate Bay team for trying to push the move even quicker.

I must admit that Im not much of a Playstation 3 person, more of a Wii person. However, this product is really making me want to buy a Playstation 3 and deck out my living room.

Stephane Perruchon is the designer of this glass topped table, with the base made up of two gigantic PS3 controllers. It’ll make your place look like the classiest dorm room ever! Which would be awesome if you actually still live in a dorm room, but otherwise, I’m not so sure.

Apple Release New Magic Mouse, iMacs, MacBooks and Mac Mini’s

As im sure most people are aware, Apple released new products yesterday and here at Crenk I wanted to just quickly run through them. RAck. r

Magic Mouse

Here it is: the new Magic Mouse, a single button mouse (with a software-controlled right click option) and a touch sensitive top surface that allows you to touch the mouse to pinch, scroll, and drag, just like a trackpad. The mouse uses two AA batteries and lasts 4 months on one change.

It costs $69 and is available at the end of October.

iMac

Fastest iMac yet. Big LEDC-backlit displays in 21,5 and 27 Inch 16:9 aspect ration. Wireless keyboard and mouse standard (check that mouse!). Fastest iMac yet. No surprise there.

The New Macbook

The new MacBook has a durable unibody enclosure (aluminum or plastic?), 1,08 inch thin, light at just 4.7 pounds, 7 hour battery. 13 inch LED backlit display and glass multi-touch display.

Windows 8 Incoming Features

You don’t have to be a genius to be certain that Microsoft is working on the next Windows version for a while now. And even though there isn’t much around about it, gathering a lot of hints, here’s a report about possible (and some certain) next features:

Hibernation improvements: Windows 8 will include a special Hibernation/Resume API that will replace Windows Vista Xpress compression engine used in the hibernation process. Windows 7 includes some improvements in this area, but they are promising a whole new experience.
Kernel security enhanced. PatchGuard feature (Windows’ kernel security module) will provide a new and enhanced security.
Maintaining and improving DirectAccess feature for mobile users. Presented in Windows 7 (along with BranchCache), DirectAccess brings a better experience for mobile users outside the organization.
New user interface. Nothing much about this, but they are promising a new one.
Improvements in the Remote Desktop protocol and other Server tools.
New download experience.
New networking features.
Windows 8 Application Server. For the server version, will include (like already has) the application server role but with a new strategy.

This new operating system, since it will be a major release that will include also the server version, will be in 2012. But still is too early to be certain about things.

On a side note, once I’ve heard that Microsoft always uses a transition operating system in the middle of the main releases. For example: Windows Millennium (between Windows 98 and Windows XP) and Windows Vista (between Windows XP and Windows 7). So, where do you think Windows 8 is?

10 New Points About The New Apple Tablet: To Be Announced in January 2010

Over at iLounge they have got a tip from a very reliable source about the specifics of the new Apple Tablet that a lot of people have been talking about. On Crenk we first talked about the Apple tablet back in May and then again in August. The iLounge source also correctly called the iPod nano 5G, iPhone 3GS and Chinese iPhone 3G months ago.

Apple has created at least three separate prototypes of its tablet computer. Let’s call it “iPad.”
Version 1 was designed with a 7” screen, which was judged to be too small. The latest version has a 10.7” screen.
It runs iPhone OS.
There have been reports that it looks like an iPhone. They’re sort of true. It looks like an iPhone 3G, complete with a curved back.
It will come in two different variations: one with 3G networking capabilities, and one without 3G networking capabilities. Think of the 3G version as a bigscreen iPhone 3GS, and the non-3G version as a bigscreen iPod touch.
Screen resolutions will obviously jump considerably from the iPhone and iPod touch 480×320-pixel displays, enabling easy reading of full-sized book and magazine pages, plus cropped newspaper pages. Expect something like 5-6 times the resolution of an iPod touch or iPhone screen (720p or thereabouts) and 7 times the touchable surface area.
It is designed to expand the iPhone and iPod touch media concept to its next potential level: as a slate-like replacement for books and magazines, plus all of the media, gaming, app, and web functionality of the iPhone and iPod touch.
It is not meant to compete with netbooks. It’s an iPhone OS media player and light communication device.
Apple is currently planning to announce it on or before January 19, 2010, and to use an iPhone-like hype buildup period to start selling it in May or June.
It is apparently awaiting a final green light from Steve Jobs; chances of it appearing in the market are believed to be 80% at this point.

I was lucky enough to receive an invite to Yahoo’s new product Meme. Meme is a micro-blogging service from Yahoo that works in a very similar way to Twitter. You may now ask, whats the difference?

So you may be wondering why doesnt everyone just move over to this service from Twitter, well basically its because of the amount of users using Twitter. Additionally its the community of developers who have helped Twitter grow at the rate they have.

What Yahoo Meme really needs to develop:

Yahoo Meme needs its own URL and identity away from the Yahoo.com domain. It would be good to see this as a standalone service
Ability to resize pictures and videos down so that a lot more streams can be seen in the same window (problem with media in the stream)

Commodore 64 Emulator for iPhone and iPod Touch Has Been Approved by Apple for iTunes Store

A previously rejected iPhone title offering emulated play of Commodore 64 titles has been approved after the developer made changes to align it with Apple’s SDK. It allows the iPhone to act as a system that was what was once Apple’s staunch competitor.

According to a report by TouchArcade, Manomio’s $4.99 C64 title was rejected in June despite having lined up all the proper licensing rights.
