There are a lot of reasons why someone might want to unfriend someone on Facebook. Here is a step by step guide on how to unfriend someone on Facebook.

First, know their name. Then type it into the search box:
That’s found her. Click on her name then press Return to make the search…
Now scroll down and look on the left side of their profile page. Some ways down you’ll see a bunch of useful options:
Click on “Remove from Friends” and you’ll see a confirmation box:
Yup, sorry, you’re off the list. Confirm with “Remove from Friends” and it’ll refresh their profile page. If it’s worked, you’ll now see what someone who isn’t a friend sees, including the “Add as Friend” button:

How Do I find an Old Wall Posting on Facebook

Facebook is always changing to keep up with users and what they are looking in their social networks. Wait sixty seconds and the newer stuff will appear on the top of the page and push the older content down. At the bottom of the page, things just “vanish” into the ether. Sure you can click on “Older Posts” but what if it’s something from days or weeks ago?

So where’s it all going? To find old wall posting following the below steps:

Click on “View my Profile” and you’ll then see generally what others would see if they looked at your profile and were already friends with you. Click on the “Wall” tab:
Now you should be able to scroll down and find your witty joke and all the comments your friends left.
Instead of clicking on “View all X comments”, click on the date and time information. Surprise! It takes you to a page that has your original Wall status update and all the comments that everyone else has left. I find this trick darn useful when I want to archive the commentary for later reference, btw.
Oh, and if you find that your status update isn’t on your Wall, scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see our friend “Older Posts”. Click on it and scroll down again.

Big Fish Games Release New Facebook Game: My Tribe

It has been announced by Big Fish Games that they are releasing their second Facebook game, My Tribe.

My Tribe is a game that’s similar to the popular iPhone/iPod Touch game virtual villagers, in that each of the people in the tribe have individual statistics and personalities, and grow in age over time. They may be rebellious and not listen to your orders when you’re not playing the game, and this adds a dimension that makes the game different from games like Restaurant City or Cafe World, where your workers are pretty much brainless as they follow your orders.

“With a player’s guidance, tribespeople develop areas of specialty – for example, construction – to help them accomplish larger tasks like building a ship or a storehouse. They grow from child to youth to adult, learn new skills, have children of their own, and eventually become respected elders. And because gameplay is continuous – your tribe is living, learning, fishing, eating and surviving even when your computer is turned off – it’s especially important for players to check in regularly on the tribe’s progress.”

The social elements come in the fact that players can travel to friends’ islands and help their friends with creating customized clothing and accessories, building shelter, providing food, and making scientific discoveries, all to gain levels and cash.

There’s no news to you if I say that having a lot of Facebook shares for your articles can bring you a lot of traffic; and also you should know that the time schedule for publishing articles it is an important factor to get a lot of hits. The WSJ’s Jessica Vascellaro has a long profile on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and the forthcoming IPO.

Here are the highlights:

Mark confirms that Facebook is going public, but not for a while

Accel partner Jim Bryer says that the IPO won’t be in 2010 (read: 2011)

Facebook expects to do between $1.2 billion and $2 billion of revenue this year

Employees are agitating for an IPO to cash in, but the private-market sale plan mollified them somewhat

Facebook got around the rule the forced Google to disclose its financials (having more than 500 shareholders) by switching to restricted stock units instead of options. Now employees won’t become shareholders until the company goes public.

Mark is worried (justifiably) that going public will reduce the company’s flexibility

Mark used to end meetings by thrusting his fist in the air and leading employees through a chant of “domination!” Someone hurried to tell the WSJ that this was a joke. Mark stopped doing it after he was advised that it was ridiculous and that some people might not think it was a joke. We doubt it was a joke (“jokes” like this get old quickly).

Mark started wearing a tie instead of a t-shirt recently because “This is a serious year.”

Mark is a micro-manager who has recently begun to step back and focus on broader strategic issues.

Yale professor Jeff Sonnenfeld says Facebook is at the point where some companies blow up because the founders are “too sure of themselves.” Facebook, Prof. Sonnenfeld says, “is at a crossroads where we have to see if Mark can build a team strong enough to challenge him.”

Hi5 Acquires Big Six the Game Developer to Improve their Network.

Hi5 have just acquired the gaming company ‘Big Six’ in order to flesh out the gaming sector of their website, a popular social network. Hi5 has been up an running for quite a few years now. Although it has never really taken off in Europe it is big in the US and is following the lead of others such as Facebook in terms of integrating gaming into their network.

As of now, 15% of their revenue comes from gaming by its users so I guess it makes sense to buy up a popular games developer in order to give the feature a shot of adrenaline. But they’ll have some stiff competition as the likes of FarmVille on Facebook have millions of active players.

An emphasis will also be put on developing the social network’s currency further to encourage people to spend their money there rather than on other networks.

“We are excited to be joining a company that shares our philosophy and vision for how social gaming will evolve,” said Kevin Gliner, co-founder and CEO, Big Six. “This deal is a perfect match because it enables us to accelerate our go-to-market plans by leveraging hi5’s huge global audience.”

Got Bad News: Dont Want to Be The Bearer of Bad News, Let Someone Else Do It!

This has to be one of the weirdest startups I have seen in quite a while. Got Bad News is a simple site with a contact form in which users can use instead to send bad news. Dont like being the bearer of bad news? All you need to do is fill out the form with contact details, etc, and the Got Bad News team will deliver that news for you.

I have many questions however:

Why would the Got Bad News team want to actually give out bad news?
How do the Bad News team make money from this venture? (cause I know I wouldnt give bad news unless I actually had to)
Why trust the Bad News team with your bad news. If this something of vital importance than why not just deliver the news yourself?

I must admit this site is one of the worst ideas I have seen in quite a while!

Facebook Now Accept PayPal

Facebook, undoubtedly the biggest social network at the minute, has been promoting and ramping up its ‘credits’ system over the past year or so. These ‘credits’ afford users the opportunity to use real world money to purchase gifts, apps and songs which can either be used by themselves or given as presents to other Facebook users.

Now, they are allowing users to pay with PayPal, which has in excess of 80 million users. Previous to this one could only purchase Facebook credits via credit card or by using their mobile phone. By intergrading with PayPal, Facebook will undoubtedly allow more people to use the service, particularly young people who may not have access to a credit card themselves but do have a PayPal account.

Recent speculation as to whether Facebook would be opening their own payment service to compete with PayPal have pretty much been put to bed with this recent update. Many people said that you would soon be able to “pay with Facebook” on eCommerce sites. However, it seems unlikely that Facebook and PayPal would be cooperating on such a big revenue-making deal whilst one party was plotting the downfall of the other.

Facebook Integrating with Google Chrome

Google Chrome extensions continue in showing us some interesting ways to interact everything in our world with Google’s browser. That’s why now we can easily check friend’s status in Facebook and even update our own with the Facebook’s Google Chrome Extension.

The usability is really simple since integrates directly with your Gmail account, placing the Facebook logo right under the Google Buzz icon. The interaction with Facebook is the same as any other API, using Facebook connect; you just need to log in and you’ll instantly get access to the updates.

Here’s an important note made by the creator, if you want to update your status you must click on the image.

Some of the previous versions of this extension seemed that had a lot of problems, now the latest build 0.0.2.1 is more stable but according to some users still is a little buggy.

Farmville, Social Networking Game of the Year

One of the biggest games on Facebook is Zynga’s Farmville. A game so highly interacted with, it’s now touting over 81 millions fans. Zynga minces no words when it states that it’s now bigger than Twitter, which it is, and is sure that people know that. The game is just one of many Zynga properties, but considering the number o players on Facebook, it’s the biggest.

What is Farmville? Well if you’d like to have a virtual garden, perhaps raise a virtual chicken, or just be a virtual farmer all together, then this game is for you. It’s a game of passion for some and annoyance for others. Those not playing have repeatedly complained and gone so far as block Farmville updates from their Facebook streams. It’s a love and hate relationship, with very little room for gray areas.

Recently at the DICE Summit, Farmville was announced as the winner during the 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards in Las Vegas. The game was up against some other heavy hitters like Bejeweled Blitz, Restaurant City, and Farm Town. Rising above them all, it was awarded the Social Networking Game of the Year, on top of an already successful venture capitalist funding round.

I’m not a fan of Farmville, I don’t play games on Facebook, but perhaps some of you do. What’s your take on the game?

Social sharing is what has made social media and the Web 2.0 era so successful. Rather than rely on emailing content we find interesting online, we are afforded the opportunity to share that same information with a click of a button to a global audience. It’s not uncommon for stories to gain traction extremely fast due to how widespread the social networks are. Driving traffic to your site, to a specific post, has never been easier with the access to the numbers of people we have today.

That being said, I’m sure Facebook never imagined it would be in the position it is today. Currently Facebook stands at a whopping 44% of social sharing activity. That’s almost two times more than Twitter and simply dominant over Yahoo and other sharing methods. With almost half the market, data is being shared at unimaginable rates online as people “Like” “Share” or “Comment” on content that their friends are posting.

Search engines don’t even really fall onto the radar with as much that is going on in Facebook. Some pundits are event commenting how Facebook may be where future users source their information as opposed to Google, Yahoo, or other methods. Twitter with it’s millions of users and faster response rate has nothing on Facebook.

So do you find yourself sharing more dominantly on Facebook than any of your other networks? Is this a shift in how people are consuming content and a tell tale sign of how people are engaging online? Should be interesting to see how long this can keep up and where Facebook will go with this.

Facebook: The Only Login

Facebook and AOL announced last night a partnership that will integrate a user’s Facebook friends into their AOL Instant Messenger. The announcement came on a day when Google announced its new attempt at capturing your social attention withGoogle Buzz and Yahoo! reminded us from the outskirts that they’ve been at this game for a year now.

According to Mercury News, about 70% of AOL users also use Facebook and the move is a sign of where AOL is heading, but we wonder if it isn’t more a sign of where Facebook is heading and has been all along.

The partnership will use Facebook Connect to import a user’s Facebook friends into their AIM contacts, enabling chat directly between the two services. This will allow AIM’s 17 million users to continue using AIM while being able to keep in touch with their existing friends on AIM.

Facebook Gets On Board With ‘Safer Internet Day’

Facebook, being the biggest of social networking sites, has decided to get on board with Safer Internet Day, which was on the 9th of February. The day, which is promoted across the EU, is aimed at keeping Internet users safe online – in particular, children. They opened their official company blog to Will Gardner who is CEO of Safety Advisory Board at Facebook and also to Childnet International.

“Safer Internet Day is an important event in the Internet safety calendar and provides a great opportunity to showcase some of the key messages about staying safe online. Held for the past four years on the second Tuesday of the second month, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its origins in the EU and is now celebrated in countries across the world. The theme this year is “Think Before You Post,” a vital message not only for children and young people but, let’s be honest, adults as well.” said Will in the blog post.

The entire initiative is aimed at educating children about what is and what isn’t sensitive information about themselves and why they shouldn’t give it out. They also instruct kids about who they should and shouldn’t ‘friend’ on social networking sites.

The main points made in the post are as follows

Using privacy setting provided by the network (a bit ironic given Facebook’s recent privacy ‘updates’)
Choosing friends carefully and knowing who sees your content
Thinking about the consequences of uploading photos and videos
Asking permission of friends to publish photographs of them.

Good to see that the industries leading site is promoting security for kids online.

Smart Phone: Motorola Droid Update Coming This Week

Motorola Droid is definitely one of the most understated smart phones. Well, perhaps not understated, just over-shadowed by the likes of the iPhone and more popular Android devices from HTC. However, it would seem as though Motorola are keeping their hopes up for the OS by releasing a new update for all Droid devices. I don’t think anybody expected it to come this soon.

The announced the impending update, which will ‘start to roll out this week’ on their official Facebook page. Besides from announcing the new update, they go on to tease us anxious fan-boys by saying that they “will have more information to share on other device upgrades later”. So maybe some of Moto’s other devices are due for a service check.

Let’s hope that the new update fixes the known Droid bugs and maybe even gives the OS a slight facelift.

How to Install the ActiveX Control on Facebook Photos

ActiveX controls are small programs that work with Internet Explorer to display certain types of files. When you try to view certain photos or animations in Facebook, you may get a message, usually via a pop-up window, that you must install an ActiveX control to view them. Many people worry that this means that Facebook wants you to download a virus or spyware of some kind. On the contrary–these type of files are pretty much par for the course.

Launch Internet Explorer on your machine. Once the program loads, click on the “Tools” menu. It should be at the top of the window directly underneath the navigation bar. Click on “Internet Options” in the drop-down menu. It will be at the very bottom.
Look at the “Internet Options” window that comes up. There are seven tabs at the top. Click on the one that says “Security” on it. Click on the button near the bottom of the window that says “Custom Level” on it.
Look at the new menu that says “Security Settings — Internet Zone” at the top. Scroll down until you find an item called “ActiveX Controls.” Double click on it. You will see 10 items related to ActiveX, each with a series of radial buttons next to it.
Find the option that says “Run ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins.” Click on the radial button next to the word “Enable.” Continue through the list looking for the options that have the word “Recommended” in parentheses next to them. Click the radial button for each of these options. This will allow ActiveX to install, but only with your permission, not automatically. That way you can block it if you wish.
Click “Okay” at the bottom of the window. Close your Internet Explorer window and restart the program. Navigate to a page in FaceBook where an ActiveX window came up when you tried to view a photo. Look for a yellow bar at the top of your screen that is the same width as your standard toolbar. Click on it and select “Allow” to let ActiveX run for this page. You should be able to view the photo properly.

Facebook Introduces New User Interface Navigation

Facebook have told us that over the past few months they have been looking for ways to improve the user interface, and mores specifically the navigation. Obviously, given that it’s a social network, Facebook have developed a new method of seeing what’s new in your circle of friends.

“In the top menu, you will find your newest notifications, requests and messages. For example, when you receive a Facebook notification about someone writing on your Wall or tagging you in a photo, you’ll see a red bubble appear in the left-hand corner near the search bar. When you click on the icon, you’ll see a drop-down menu with your most recent notifications.” Said Jing Chen

The menu to the left of your profile has also been changed around to make it “Easier for you to communicate with and discover content from your friends”. By clicking on News Feed, Messages, Events or Photos you can instantly view the most recent content from your friends as seen in the screenshot above. You can also use the new ‘Friends’ feature to look for new friends who are connected to you via others.

Also, they have made the Game and Application section much, much better. They’re making it easier for you to organise your apps and also find new ones via the “Games” and “Applications” buttons on the home screen.

“You will also start to see counters next to the applications you have bookmarked on your home page. Counters will notify you when you have a specific action to take, so that you never miss your turn in a game or an update from a friend in an application.” she said.

You can bookmark your favourite applications using the “Add Bookmark” button in an application, and then you’ll have one-click access to them from the left-hand menu beneath the Applications and Games dashboards. Click the “More” link to see all of your newest bookmarks.”

It’s good to see that Facebook are continually updating their UI and making it more user friendly.

Facebook has announced that it now has 400 million active users. Just one year ago Facebook had 150 million users, so 2009 was an incredible year for the social media giant.

There can be no doubt that Facebook is pretty much unstoppable at the moment, a real juggernaut.

Facebook Webmail Approaching?

There’s a strong rumor saying there’s an internal Facebook project developing to be released to the public soon: Facebook’s Webmail.

As greedy as it could sound to you, it really doesn’t seem like a big shock, Facebook is the biggest social network available with over 350 million users and with an amazing growth in the last few years. Constantly looking for new ways to expand; a while ago we’ve showed you an interview of Facebook’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckeberg, that said Facebook is not intended to be a simple website, they are looking to represent your identity in Internet.

There isn’t much information about the project, which already has a codename: Titan and that your mail address will be the same used in your vanity URL. In my case should be augusto.a.alvarez@facebook.com. And of course, you will be able to set E-Mail Clients like Outlook or Thunderbird to access your mail using POP or IMAP protocols.

The webmail really sounds like a very possible next step. Could we expect next a bigger instant messaging experience?

Manchester United and City Both Ban Players from Using Twitter and Facebook

In what must be the biggest social media own goal this year, British football clubs Manchester United and Manchester City have both banned their players from using Twitter.

The Manchester Evening News reports that players were told to stay away from social media services after a number of fake accounts were uncovered recently.

Manchester United issued a statement yesterday confirming that none of its players had accounts, while the club’s rivals Manchester City confirmed to the Manchester Evening News that they had the same policy.

I find this crazy, especially when Manchester United is in so much debt! Social media could be leverage to increase their current revenue streams and even develop new revenue streams such as YouTube channels with more activity, Official twitter account with targeted ads, etc.

Inbox2: Emails and Social Networks All In One Unified Stream for Free

Inbox2 is a new web application that is currently available in beta, in which lets you pull all of your emails and social network communications to a single unified stream.

Currently, Inbox2 is completely free and you can either user their standalone application or a Facebook application. If you already spend tons of time on Facebook, for example, you can add your email, Twitter, and other updates to your Facebook notifications instead, as well as read and send messages from any of your non-Facebook accounts without leaving Facebook’s site.

Inbox2 also integrates well with your existing system, allowing you to import your existing labels and stars from other services like Gmail. It also has support for Microsoft Exchange 2007, and is planning on releasing an iPhone app in the near future (followed by apps for other smartphones). Linkedin iPhone Update Offers More Functionality

If you had a chance to update your apps today then perhaps you were surprised by an update for your Linkedin mobile app. The buzz across the media sites is Linkedin’s new shiny app that offers 100% more functionality than the prior version of the app did. For all purposes the prior version was useless. The limited functionality made it one of those apps you had because you hoped, but you just never used. Luckily, following Facebook’s recent app update, the new Linkedin app gives users more of what they want with a few interesting extras.

The layout you might recognize from the Facebook app. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was their inspiration. I wouldn’t necessarily go out and call them copiers, only because with a mobile app there is only so much you can do, and if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Still, the similarity might work in its favor because users will be comfortable with the layout. What separates the old and new is the increased functions of being able to view and answer inbox messages, invite and accept others invitations, browse profiles, search profiles, and most importantly a new additions.

The new addition is the ability to connect with users in your immediate area using your iPhone. The “In Person” selection makes your iPhone a homing device for others in your area how are Linkedin users and whom you might want to connect with. A great piece of functionality for conferences and other large gatherings where you can exchange business cards, but not all cards come with a Linkedin profile attached. I used this from my apartment, and it picked up on a few people nearby. I’m not quite sure on the range, but it seems a pretty worthwhile addition to the lineup.
