How to Create eMail Aliases in Hotmail

Hotmail has just introduced a new feature which enables users to add Email aliases. Aliases are alternative email ID which can be send and received from the primary account. For example, if your email ID is someone@hotmail.com, you can create aliases like someone+internet@hotmail.com using the symbol ‘+’ to separate out emails related to Internet. Email sent to all these aliases are delivered to your primary account.

How to Create Email Aliases:

To start creating an Alias, open this page http://mail.live.com/?rru=createalias, log in to your Hotmail account.

Click Create an alias button and Hotmail will check if the email ID is already existing or not. If the ID is not taken, you will see the confirmation and will ask you to create a new folder for this ID or use the inbox.

You can add up to five aliases per year to your Hotmail account, up to fifteen aliases in total. More details available here.

Jobs Answers about iOS 4 Performance on iPhone 3G

Steve Jobs is answering e-mails to customers, again, this time answering about a user concern about iOS 4 poor performance on iPhone 3G. Jobs said that Apple is already working on it and there’ll be an update soon.

We’ve seen earlier how Steve Jobs took a little time to elaborate short responses about, sometimes, important issues. This time, the problem is regarding about iOS 4 which had a big presentation with iPhone 4; but apparently Apple didn’t realized that this OS has several and important performance issues on 3G devices.

Fortunately for those 3G owners and using the words of Jobs “update coming soon”.

The user said:

“I’ve waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I’ve read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I’m not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.”

Jobs’ answer:

“Software update coming soon.

Sent from my iPhone”

In case you were wondering about Steve Jobs email, here it is: sjobs@apple.com. Although this mailbox does not go directly to him, it goes to a team of assistants and then gets forwarded to him if it’s important.

How to Create a Temporary Mail Account

How many times did you want just an email account for a few days or just a moment? Tempalias is a simple and free web app that can do that for us.

I don’t know about you, but I always find some sites that just for accessing some content they ask for a registration; and that step requires, of course, an email address. With that email address entered, I’m pretty sure that I’ll be receiving some spam, even though we are not subscribing to any newsletter or notification, the spam is always there.

Tempalias simply creates (for free and no registration required) for us a temporary mail account where we even can set the amount of days from which the account will be available; within that time, all mails sent to this temp mail box will be forwarded to a real account you select. After that, the mail is deleted and all possible spam associated will be lost.

Access the Tempalias site, enter your real email address and select the amount of days you wish the account to be available (or a number of received messages) and click on “Generate Alias”. And you’ll receive your temporary mail.

Microsoft Changes Look of Hotmail – Thoughts?

It was not that long ago that Crenk reported some big announcements coming from Microsoft, including someMicrosoft Hotmail Logochanges coming for Hotmail. A week ago those changes came to life when Hotmail users were introduced to a new look and feel for the long running email client. In an attempt to take on rivals Yahoo and Google the change was perhaps a long time coming, and many long time Hotmail users might appreciate the new additions and features.

The idea to remove some of the clutter and allow users to integrate social platforms and interact with other sites was vital, especially in an era when so many are looking for the one stop shop of utilities that will serve their needs. Some of the features added include:

  • sweep feature which allows users to clear their entire email with one click.
  • single-click feature which allows for one click of an email from a specific sender and deleting all of their emails.
  • ability to edit Powerpoint and documents in the email whether the user as the application or not.
  • active previews of emails to include attachments like photos, videos, and more.
  • watch YouTube videos, check social networks all without leaving their inbox.

These changes are big when you consider how long the service has remained stagnant while its competitors made big strides to attract users. Still Hotmail is still considered one of the most widely used email services with over 350 million active users.

While Hotmail has added these new additions is it really enough to sway people away from Gmail for example? Or will Hotmail still prevail due to its simplicity and lack of “bloat”, as it’s called, that Gmail users might experience.

What are your thoughts? A winner for Microsoft? I used to be a Hotmail user but went to Gmail because of the wide offerings available. Hotmail became boring and dull even in the UI experience. Perhaps now it’s got some life breathed into it. We’d like to hear your thoughts.

Improve Gmail Productivity Instantly

I’m a huge Gmail fan. Yes I’ve heard everyone talk about how much power Google has, and how dangerous it is to put things in the cloud, and the numerous complaints about privacy issues, but I’m a fan, plain and simple. I get what I need to get done, it’s all streamlined and integrates well with one another. I could probably fine ten apps that each one do one thing in the Google system, but why depend on so many? Keep it simple is what I say.

Recently I’ve been alerted of a way to make my Gmail productivity even more effective, and that’s with the use of Gtriage. While many of us are inundated with email after email, sometimes finding that hundreds have come into our inbox at any given time away from the computer, who wants to go through all of that?Gtriage does the work of training your inbox instantly, and over time it learns to grow with you and identify which emails are vital and which can be touched later. I won’t say it’s perfect, the key word is train, so while you have parameters to set in the beginning, it will grow with you based on how you feed it information.

Emails that it determines to be important will be labeled “IMPORTANT” and put into a singular folder that is accessible on the desktop or on your mobile. Because the application runs in the background, there’s no apps to install, no third party plugins, no anything, so desktop or mobile, everything just works. It’s a good way to never miss important messages, and if you’ve got the patience to allow it to learn your habits, can be very powerful. I’ve only been using this for a few days, but I’ll probably circle back in 30-60 days to see if it’s really learned who I am and what emails are important to me.

New Thunderbird Appeals to Masses

thunderbird

In the battle over email application supremacy, Thunderbird has been one of the  most highly developed for web application next to Google’s Gmail. Consistently we’re treated to new releases, updates, and efforts to make the user experience more comfortable and seamless with other email providers as it works to be the catch all for all of our digital communication. Most recently Thunderbird introduced a bevy of plug-ins over the summer that increased the usability of the application, but also made it more fun. Millions of dedicated Thunderbird users keep this email client in constant development and whats being released this week is no exception.

We Transfer: Send Large Files With Ease

we transfer logo Sending a whopping file of 1.5Gb can be annoying. Firstly you have the constraints likely imposed by your e-mail provider which disallows such large e-mails meaning you’ll have to break it up or compress it. Then of course you have the time it can take for said e-mail to be sent and may God help you if you’re sending it to multiple recipients.

We Transfer is an a great start-up service which allows you to easily send large files of up to 2Gb to anyone without using traditional e-mail. It’s really easy to use and quicker than most services for two reasons.

we transfer 2

Firstly, you don’t have to register with the service. Secondly, you only have to fill out one quick form which you can see a sample of above. It takes less than a minute.  Once you click transfer, that’s it. Your file is uploaded to their servers and can be downloaded within the following two weeks by the recipient who’ll get an e-mail notifying them of the pending file. Quick, easy and efficient.

Huge URLs and Crazy E-Mail Addresses

huge URL We’ve all heard or Bit.ly, TinyURL and the rest. All of them shorten URLs so they can be discreet and fit places (like in the restrictive Twitter posting area). But what about the opposite end of the scale. What about huge URLs? And I mean HUGE.

HugeUrl.com is a website that takes you average sized link and makes it really big. I’m still yet to come up with a good use for it other than to annoy friends and for your own individuality.

I was planning on posting a link here to the Crenk Twitter account or something but when I got the link lengthened at hugeURL.com it was over forty lines long which I though was a bit much to have on the homepage.

Another similar service which I found was http://www.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijk.com/ who offer the worlds longest e-mail addresses. Apparently they’re so long that some software and online forms won’t accept them and “people have a hard time typing in your e-mail address” – obviously.

So long story short (pun intended) – go to HugeURL.com if you want ridiculously long URLs which are useful for nothing and go to http://www.abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzabcdefghijk.com/ for the worlds longest e-mail address.
