Hermes a French design firm has partnered with Monaco based ship builder Wally to create the ‘WHY 58×38,’ a craft that will cost around £90million to build.

Naval architect Mauro Sculii said: ‘The advantage of travelling on the WHY boat is that you take your own space with you, your house, your island so you are not in a hurry to arrive, you just have the pleasure of travelling and being on board. That’s the novelty. Usually a boat is just a means of transport.’

There has been a lot of talk recently about the new PS3 Slim, but we have just come across a completely new design from Tai Chiem, this 3D model will surely make all the gizmo freaks drooling spit all over the place.

From the basic images it seems as thought the designer believes that the next PS4 will have an OLED screen.

Twitter T-Shirts

“I’m not a blogger. I just tweet a lot”.

It’s true. I’m not a blogger and I do tweet a lot. That’s why I’m about to place an order for a t-shirt that says exactly that from Threadless.com. They have just opened up a new twitter branch of their website that takes popular, funny and strange tweets and makes t-shirts out of them. Pretty cool ones I might add.

Basically, people submit tweets to them or they find the tweets. If they think they’re funny or interesting they’ll make a cool t-shirt out of them. The price of a t-shirt is $18 before shipping and their available in sizes from small to Extra Extra Large for our small or large tweeters. They’re also available in both man and women sizes.

I think it’s a cool idea. There are hundreds and thousands of people using Twitter every singe day and I’m sure that a proportion of them are as nerdy as me and as such will see it fit to buy several T-Shirts that say “140 is the new 420”.

There is also a chance to make some cash. If you nominate a tweet that gets printed you can get your hands on $140. Furthermore, if you submit your own tweet that gets printed you will make $500. Not bad for a little bit of tweeting. Below are a couple of my favourite tees I seen at Threadless.

Techcrunch Theme Changed Again, This Time It Is Actually User Friendly

I have also noticed today that Techcrunch has changed their theme again. It hasn’t really been too long since they last changed their theme, probably about a quarter off the top of my head. Last time the Techcrunch theme was changed they seems to have nothing in their sidebar except advertising (i know Crenk also has a little bit of advertising), however that being said this new theme really addresses the key issues of the older theme.

The site itself is a lot more compact in the header and key change is that the 728×90 advertisement is no longer above the site, but fitting in with the header itself. The key green is not really as predominant, but it makes it easy to distinguish between Techcrunch and the other network sites. In the old theme they just had excepts on the home page, but now they have an additional three slots in which they can feature certain articles. Navigation has really improved within this new theme and now it is a lot easier to find new content. As well as feature articles in the header on the home page they have also added eleven featured articles in the sidebar sitewide. If I didnt have an RSS reader or use it everyday, with the previous theme it would have been impossible to keep up with the new content, however with this new theme it provides me with a better idea on what is happening in the tech space.

This new theme is far from perfect but it is a huge improvement from all the previous themes they had on the site. I would really still like to see a lot more integration between the Techcrunch home page and the other network sites, but im sure that will come within the year.

Does Branding Play a Part In a Site The Size of Crenk?

There hasn’t been a post on here for a few days so I thought I would just have a bit of a rant. Here at Crenk the theme of the site has changed several times in the last year. Currently for the last few weeks I have been thinking about re-branding the site and actually changing the theme again. This time I have thought against changing the site. My basic thought process was that a site like Crenk needs to improve to a certain level and then branding has more of an affect, but at the present size it is really more about content and basic usability of the site. I was wondering if this was the thought process of most blog owners or am I in the minority?

Google Reader Changes Design But Not Sure For The Better

Google Reader has for a long time been my RSS reader of choice. The design has been simple, easy to use, lots of customisation options, ability to group and more.

Last week Google released a new version of Google Reader and I thought I would take a little time and review it for everyone.

Key changes include collapsible navigation, updated look and feel, friends get promoted and more bundle feeds.

Friends get promoted

Shared items have grown up and gotten their own section in the navigation pane. You can collapse this entire section and use the title to see everything your friends have shared, or leave it open to track friends with shared items. (Don’t forget that you can add new friends in “Sharing settings“.)

More bundled feeds!

Previously Google has some default bundles that you could subscribe too, in a variety of areas. Previously this was very limited and there were only about 10 areas. Now they have added huge amounts of bundle feeds for pretty much every major niche. If you go to “Browse for stuff” then you can see bundles.

Collapsible Navigation

Each section of the navigation pane now has its own options menu and minimize/maximize controls. You can collapse each major section of navigation down to one line and focus on only the things you choose to use.

Updated look and feel

The look and feel has changed a lot in this new version of Google Reader. I personally would have liked it if there was an option to return to the old version or at least have a variety of versions. The new version is very neutral, with white and a very light blue being the main colours. However, I find post a lot harder to read in this new version. Recently Gmail received a variety of themes in which users could choose from, I really hope this isn’t too long in coming to Google Reader.
Overall

Overall the changes to Google Reader were needed, except in the case of changing the colour scheme. I think the colour scheme changes are definitely a step backwards, but this can be changed when hopefully they release a themes range to choose from.

PixelStick Determines Distances on your Screen for Graphic Design

Lately I’ve been doing more and more web design and with that comes graphic design, photo placement, text alignment, so on and so forth. While I’m building a site out, I often find myself needing to know the exact distance in a column or row so that I can size a graphic or photo to fit properly. This is where PixelStick comes into play.

This tiny Mac only piece of software will show you distance and angles shown your screen, perfect for web developers needing to know how wide something is to fit a proper graphic in. Prior to using this tool, I used to screen grab a site, open in Photoshop and then crop down to determine the distance. Now all of this is gone!

Anyone who does web or graphic design work should give PixelStick a try, and it’s totally for free. The only requirement is Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

The New and Improved Crenk

I would like to welcome everyone to the new Crenk design. Before I run through the new features of the design I would like to thank our designer and coder, Astrit. Astrit has a great company which really helped us make our ideas become reality.

As you will notice with the new Crenk the design and branding has completely changed and become a lot more simplistic. The logo and tag line has remained the same as well as the highlighted red colour. However, in terms of basic navigation there are a lot of changes. Navigation now is more recognisable on this design and each channel is easier to navigate into. Additionally, you will noticed that we now have our most recent article list in the left column. This is aimed to help making content easier to find within the design.

The other major changes are in terms of advertising. Crenk now has a top 728 x 90 banner in which acknowledge some of our main sponsors. Additionally, a 300 x 250 banner can be found in the right column, as well as a 160 x 600 at the bottom of the left column. Crenk is very thankful for our sponsors because they are the ones that help us stay in business. Finally, we are going to open 125 x 125 advertising which will be located in the right column above the 300 banner. If anyone is interested in one of those positions, please drop us an email and let us know.

Finally, I would like to welcome our new contributor Abdylas, who will be adding to our You’ve Been Crenked section which focuses on startup reviews. Welcome to the new Crenk Theme

In the last three months we have had a lot of changes here at Crenk. Our previous theme was personalised and since we now have Ade on the team it was a good time to move from a personal weblog style to a more commercial theme.

I have never thought about Crenk being a pure commercial entity. It has long been my personal weblog and I would never want it to be seen as just a stupid money making blog that is trying to earning as much in revenue as it can per month. Since on the new theme I have placed Adsense, this will not be a permanent fixture, just a stop gap until I can arrange some nice in-house placements.

The colour scheme on Crenk has changed and some bought some much needed branding to the site.

Please bear with us as we make a few changes over the coming days. If you have any suggestions or comments about the new theme, please let us know.

Technorati Opens Up And Goes Back To Serving The Geeks Again

Interesting news has come our of Technorati today: former boss David Sifry has announced changes that will help bloggers again, like in the old days of Technorati.

Changes include:

Change of design and results on search pages.
Authority filtering. You can now narrow your results based on authority, which really only goes so far when tryign to evaluate the usefulness a blog, or if it is a spam blog.
Charts. You can now see the popularity of a word over time.
New Server Farm. They recently moved from 365 Main to a new colocation center.

It is good news to hear that Technorati is back and trying to satisfy their core customer base that helped them get to where they are today. Recent redesigns have completely turned away several numbers of bloggers from the service and although these changes are going in the right direction, im not too sure if they will be able to get all the bloggers back. Time will tell! Technorati stick to your core customer base, cause Google owns the rest of the blog search market!

Paypal Gets a Makeover

Im sure this bit of news is most probably worthless, but PayPal has a new look! Paypal have been reaching out to some of their merchants and letting them know (via emails) that the company is adopting a new look in the coming weeks. It already seems to slowly be taking shape!

Digg Announces Facelift

Digg’s Kevin Rose has announced plans for a Digg facelift this week.

The change comes in the form of a home page that can be viewed in three forms: just news, just videos, and both at once.

The new home page will “pave the way” for Digg to start cataloging images, which will be rolled out around October.

Digg also plans to overhaul the comments section so it’s “easier and more lightweight.”

Orkut Launches New Design

Orkutis rolling out a new design this morning, starting with a select number of users. Itâ€™s a much-needed change to the previously ugly social network that became unintentionally popular in Brazil. Apart from Brazilians does anyone else actually use Orkut? It is so surprising that Google, the leaders in many markets have never really tried to make an impact on the social networking aspect of the internet!

John Chow dot com with New Blog Design

I was just surfing around the web as a normally do at the end of a hard day and I just happened to have a look at John Chow, the miscellaneous ramblings of a dot com mogul, and found he has a new blog design.

The old design had pretty much become and institution and there is even a parody of the site, John Cow dot com.

Anyway, John Chow’s new design was done by Nate Whitehill at Unique Blog Design and I must say it is one of the best blog designs I have seen in a while. If the Techcrunch boys are reading this, Michael Arrington, why not get this guy to design your blogs!!

Hangon, why Techcrunch, Nate how about you design a new template for Crenk!!
