]]> Songr is a completely free and small application which we can use to search over 16 music engines and directly download files within the app. And even more, we can download YouTube high-quality videos and if we prefer, just extracting and downloading the audio from the video.

Since the Napster blast, the web did not have the chance to unify a good way for users to get music for free (and legally); tons of sites and applications appeared but not all of them are famous. Songr is one of those that are in fact quite powerful. You can download it from this link.

]]> ListenToYouTube.com is a simple and free web app which we can use to extract the audio from a YouTube video. No registration required, we only need the YouTube URL and we are ready to go.

There are several sites and applications available to do this, but this is one of the simplest we can find.

  1. Just access the web site ListenToYouTube.com.
  2. Copy/Paste the YouTube URL. Click Go.
  3. Wait a few seconds until the video is retrieved to a server, removed the audio and make it available to download.

We can even choose the type of quality of the audio we are going to download, standard or high quality.

]]> bluemic_logoAs an audio content creator, I’m always looking for ways to record better audio, whether it’s in my in-home studio or on my mobile as I’m on the go. Too often I find myself with opportunities to record a quick sound byte while attending conventions, meetings, seminars, or running into people across town. I’ve tested a lot of audio equipment out, but to fit my needs the real winner has been Blue Microphones.

Blue offers a wide variety of microphone options from stand alone in-studio mics, microphones with webcams attached, and microphones that attach to your Apple mobile devices to capture the best quality audio possible.

I personally use their Yeti desktop model as my main recording device at home, but most recently I’ve looked into their Apple device microphone, the Mikey, which connects where your normal charging adapter would plug in for either recording or listening purposes, basically two birds with one stone.

Ultimately there are a lot of microphone makers out there, but for me Blue Microphone has been a clear winner not just for their products, but for their customer service and their social engagement efforts on Twitter and Facebook which makes it easy to reach out to them.

]]> I’m a huge fan of music. I’ve got several versions of the iPod for a variety of occasions, I’ve got streaming music players all over my computer, I’ve got sites bookmarked that stream audio from overseas; for me, there’s just nothing better than paying music for inspiration, clarity, and nostalgia. To increase my music listening abilities I’ve used plugins such as FoxyTunes to give me access to my music straight from my browser, but what if I’m not home or on my laptop. There’s a good chance I’ve got my mobile on me and I can stream from there, but for those of us always changing computers, or using public computers, there’s now an interesting option that we can participate with.

Stereo8 is a new stream audio web app that streams straight from your browser. No downloading, no installing, no problems. Just about any browser should work (I tested on Safari, Firefox, IE6 and IE7, Opera, and Chrome). Simply select a genre of music you want to listen to, and let the music play. You can interact with the music by voting on what you like, and those votes determine what’s played. Stereo8 calls it self a true internet radio with a twist. That twist is that listeners can vote and share music with one another making it a social community of sorts.

As I write this article I’ve picked the video game category and have listened to some of the biggest games from my present and past. In some of the other categories I was listening to songs that perhaps I was not a fan of myself, and some more obscure songs that I never even knew existed, which is not always a good thing. But if you’re looking to be introduced to something new and unique, far from the beaten path you’re used to traveling, then perhaps Stereo8 is for you. A few stations I found really solid, and just now they started playing the Terran theme from Starcraft, so that’s just an idea of the kind of music you’ll be listening to (at least on the game channel).

]]> Last week I ran into a small problem when trying to put an audio book onto my iPod.  The audio book was in .wma, or Windows Media Audio format, my iPod doesn’t like that format.  A quick Google searches lead me to one of the simplest pieces of conversion software that I’ve used in some time.

Switch is a multi-platform dead simple program to use.  Simply tell it where the directory of files lives that you want to convert, point it to the directory where you want them to end up (or the same one), along with what format you want them converted into and click a button.  I seriously wish more software was this easy to use.

On my core 2 duo Macbook with 2GB of RAM it took about 4 hours to convert 12 .wma files into 192 kb/s .mp3’s.  This isn’t a five-minute job to do, and I fully expected it to take some time, so plan ahead.

Sound quality, to my untrained ears was identical.

Ease of use for this multi-platform software, being able to handle dozens of file formats and being free means this small app will stay installed for some time.
