Google Ads Appear on Isohunt and TorrentFreak Gets Details a little Wrong

Today it was repoted by Torrentfreak that according to a report in the Norwegian press today, some companies have reacted uncomfortably to the news that their Google Adwords text ads have been appearing on IsoHunt, the world’s third largest BitTorrent site.

Google has a policy of not displaying ads on sites that are involved in or linked to copyright infringement, with many torrent sites previously excluded from the scheme. Of course, some still carry Google ads, purely because Google is unaware of the nature of those sites, but with IsoHunt the situation is different. On IsoHunt the Google ads aren’t directly served by Google, but by Ask.com, a Google AdWords ‘reseller’.

Ask.com, formerly known as Ask Jeeves, works with several other BitTorrent sites. Only on IsoHunt have they displayed search based ads that came from Google AdWords campaigns. They have been doing so for several months, perhaps years, but up until now nobody complained, or knew.

In a statement, Jan-Henrik Ohme, head of digital marketing at Sony BMG said “We have stopped the section of the campaign that goes to the third party until Google cleans up the issues. We have contacted Google, and they took immediate action.”

For its part, Google Norway has apologized for the situation, and said that the advertisers should not be held responsible for the placement of the ads, since due to the 3rd party involvement, they had no way of knowing where they would appear. The campaigns are not limited to Norway though, and Ask.com certainly has something to explain to Google.

This situation was bound to happen but some of the companies dont really understand why it happened. Ask.com was only allowed to have their ads on Isohunt because the deal they started with Google was done after the Isohunt deal. Thus, Google allowed all historical deals to continue as normal. Therefore, it is impossible to now have Google ads on new bittorrent related sites.

Additionally, the ads are not done through Ask.com, they are from Ask.co.uk. This is because Ask.com sell their own adwords type program still and Ask.co.uk controls the Google Adwords reseller program.

Top 10 Adsense Optimized Wordpress Themes

There are so many publishers out there that are just learning what Wordpress is and how they can actually make money from blogging. The easiest advertising network to join is Adsense from Google. Adsense provides users the ability to earn money every time one of their readers clicks on an ad. Recently I was looking through free Wordpress themes in search of the most basic template I could find which have adsense blocks as standard and in which optimise those positions to bring in the most revenues for the blogger. After all my searching I thought I might even compile a list of ten themes that I think everyone should use when they are first starting to blog on Wordpress.

Technorati Media Launches Their AdEngage Product. Just a Poor Advertising Network

Technorati Media has finally launched their Engage (advertising marketplace product) live. Previously this new tool was in Alpha stage and only certain people could use the product. This all happened because Technorati purchased AdEngage.

Since purchasing AdEngage and launching Technorati Media I think Technorati has really lost sight of what their core business model is!

Technorati was a blog search engine that doesnt currently have really market share and presence and their product offering seems to be going down hill by the day. To compensate for this they purchased AdEngage and launched Technorati Media, which is just an ad network.

Looking at the current results from this ad network which has been in operation for several months, seem to be very poor. They are selling advertising for blogs such as The Inquisitr and Profy. The results seem to be as follows, for CPM advertising they are offering a decent CPM rate in between $1.00 – $2.00, but ads are currently only for the USA market and even then their fill rates arent 100%. For all other countries they suggest to use Google Adsense, which is fine, but unless you have a huge amount of USA traffic then this isnt really worth the effort, because what you make on USA revenues you lose on Google revenues elsewhere. In terms of selling sponsorships they also seem to be terrible, with The Inquisitr having 2 125×125 ad slots in the sidebar in which they havent even been able to sell 1 for a few months.

This is all about Technorati realising they dont have a search engine product that is any good, so they are looking for additional revenues streams which will help them eventually sell the company. Is that the way it is or am I wrong?

What Are The Best Plugins for Wordpress? Here At My Top 20

Wordpress has to be one of the most popular if not the most popular blogging software in the world today. Due to its popularity there are thousands of developers all over the world who are building plugins to add to the platform. Thus, I thought I would put together a short list of my favourite plugins, so here is my top 20.

  1. Akismet
The must have spam catcher. It’s already present in your default wordpress installation, if you haven’t activated it, please do it before those spams accumulate.
  2. All in one SEO pack
(Inactive)This is an great plugin that will help you manage the meta tags for articles enabling them with unique meta and titles.I use an even better plugin now (Headspace2), which is AllinSEO x 10 times. So this one is inactive. You may want to use it if you are looking for a hassle free and easy meta tag management.
  3. Feed copyrighter plugin
This one is reposible for throwing up those copyright statement at the end of the feeds in RSS readers. It is one way of fighting the scrappers, not sure how effective it is, but it is indeed one weapon we hve right now.Bad thing – The credit link will appear on all RSS footers.
  4. Better comments manager
This is one of the best plugins I’ve always cherished using. It enables easy management of comments, lets you reply to them easily, mass edit/approve them. And yes, this is from Keith and team. His plugins have exceptional quality after all.
  5. Comment Luv
This plugin is responsible for placing the link to your latest posts on comments. Nice plugin, it crawls your site (from the info you submit while commenting), and get’s the latest URL, parse it as HTML beneath your name.Bad thing – To tweak the text that appears with it, there are no options menu, and you have to edit the code. Not too many are comfortable doing it.
  6. Duplicate sidebar widgets
This plugin helps you to duplicate the widgets modules to drag and drop on the sidebar. Ex: If you want two instances of the random posts widget, this one replicates it.
  7. Enhanced Contact form
This plugin is responsible for all those contact forms appearing in the pages.
  8. Feed footer
Adds anything in HTML to feeds appearing in RSS reader. 10 spots available, suitable for advertising and throwing up messages.
  9. Google AdWrap
You know about Googles section targeting right? This plugin adds the “sections” to be targeted to comments and content area thereby the ads that appear on Google AdSense will be heavily contextual to the information in these sections.Bad thing – You can’t manually add te google_ad_section code to any other place on the blog.
  10. Google XML sitemaps
Must have for all blogs. Generates an XML sitemap making the contents visible for search spiders.Bad thing – If you enable the robots.txt rewriting, everything you set manually on robots.txt is rewritten.
  11. HeadSpace2
The best meta tag management plugin I’ve seen in the recent times. No words to describe – killer plugin!Bad thing – Initially, difficult to understand how it functions and yo use.
  12. Homepage Excerpts
Adds a “more” link cutting posts on the main homepage within certain limit of characters. Good for curbing duplicate content on wordpress.
  13. I love social bookmarking
(Inactive)Great plugin that displays a pull down menu for social bookmarking on all the top social media websites.Bad thing – Serious alignment issues.
  14. KB Linker
Great plugin to increase the number of links within your site. It enables you to select a keyword for which you can set a link. Where ever this keyword appears, it would make it a link.Bad thing – It injects the link code even to links and in between html codes ! And you get html errors sometimes.
  15. Random posts widget
Throws up a set of random posts on the sidebar. Good options available.
  16. Search Meter
Gives me access from the dashboard to search phrases on DailySEOblog search box. And also shows if the person who searched the phrase got the info he wanted or not. Good plugin to get an idea of topics to blog.
  17. SEO for Wordpress
A little outdated plugin, it says is reduces instances of duplicate content. But it doesn’t show us how and where. Otherwise a good concept.
  18. Shylock AdSense
The killer plugin that allows you to inject adsense codes anywhere on the post, and decide which ads to go where.
  19. Ultimate Google Analytics
Great plugin that will manage Google Analytics code injection and tracking a breeze. You could very well do it manually, but this one is a laymans friend.
  20. WP- Stats
Displays the wordpress blog stats from the dashboard. A better stats if you wat uptodate results. Analytics is a day and some hours late.

RSS Feed Advertising – Google Now Joins This Market, Launches Adsense for Feeds

RSS advertising has long been an underutilised revenue stream. On Friday Google Launched feed advertising with Adsense, and there has been a lot of buzz around the internet.

Although there might be some issues with migrating a feedburner feed account you are already using for your site, this is highlighted in the Daily Blog Tips link above.

Here at Crenk we have tried to not only sign up for Google Adsense, but also we have gone back to testing another RSS feed advertising provider, Pheedo. Im going to test both of these services at the same time and hope to report on the results. So stay tuned!

Google Acquires Jaiku

The news of the day must be that Google has acquired Jaiku. Jaiku is a microblogging site similar to Pownce and Twitter. It is a bit of a surprise that Google has opted to purchase Jaiku (which hails from Finland) instead of Twitter (the market leader) or Pownce (the new kid on the block with the best user interface).

Have a look at what everyone else has been saying about the deal:

Twitter has not long got Series A Funding, so it would have been rare for them to be purchased. Pownce on the other hand seems to be on the downhill slide. Since their highly publicised launch Pownce has never lived up to expectations and with the recent news about Kevin Rose potentially moving Pownce features over to Digg, it has just never recovered. If you look at Alexa data on Pownce you will notice it wont be too long until it dies a death, on the quick slide down. Its seems that Jaiku was an important match with Google because it has more of a presence in activity streams and mobile presence and those are the markets Google is trying to gain more market share. It that last week Google also launched Adsense for mobile, so this will be a nice addition to boost the start of that new service.

Google Adsense Video Unit

The word around the blogosphere today is the launch of Adsense Video units. Problogger broke the news last week and it is slowly starting to happen. The Google blog has said you can log into your Adsense account and then select Video Units, but I’m yet to see that option. Below I have added what the Video Unit will look like.

Much the same as every other Adsense unit in the market it looks like crap. The poor quality of banners and what they are promoting just makes the ad look pathetic. I have never understood why anyone would click on one of these ads.
