How to Update iPod Touch to Firmware 2.0 for Free

I’m afraid that sth will happen to my ipod. is it safe? Can I turn my ipod back to 1.1.4 if i update it to 2.0 and then won’t have this hacked 2.0 update? i keep holding shift but nuthings happening!
He left out the fact that you need to hold down Option if you’re using a Mac. Shift is for Windows users.

Restore button is on the summary page when you plug in your ipod, its alt and not shift for mac users and its does work on version 8. if that clears antthing up

I want to add the following tips for some newbie (as if you hold shift while you are opening the iTunes you get another message):
1. Download iTunes 8.x from apple site.
2. Open the iTunes, go to your IPOD section.
2. Hold Shift (for Windows users) and click Restore.
3. Select iPod-xxxxxxxxx_Restore.ipsw
4. Enjoy!

I have tried to upgrade my iPod Touch 1Gen to a newer version about 100 times and I can’t get it to work correctly.
I get the same error everytime.
I tried it with iTunes 8, and I tried restoring it to version 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2
None of them worked.
So then I tried downloading iTunes 7.7 and then tried restoring my iPod Touch to version 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2
STILL NONE OF THEM WORK!
I am stuck, I have tried everything.

I encountered the 1403 error message too but I think this was caused by iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw being corrupted. Make sure that the restore file you downloaded is approx 227MB in size.

Well, I’ve had this same error and I’ve managed to fix
1st: Check if the file’s size’s normal.
2nd: If it has a normal size, make a copy of it, rename it to .rar extension (iPod1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw to iPod1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.rar) and see if you can extract correctly.
If you’ve succeded in both of the test above and the error keep popin up, then you should try re-downloading your firmware (remember to clear your cache before so).
If you haven’t, then we’ve just diagnosted our problem, what you need to do: Clear all your browser’s cache and try downloading again (maybe from another source).
The main info about this error I got was, you’ve firmware issues related to corrupted or missing parts. So nothing big you should worry about.
and normal size is around 250 or more MB.

ipodfan, if your touch has volume control button on the left then its a 2nd gen.

If you can’t find the “restore” button, it is on the summary page on your iPod’s menu. Press “alt” and click restore, then choose the update program.
