How to Update iPod Touch to Firmware 2.0 for Free

alright people i know how to update your touch from any firmware version to 2.2.1 . Just follow those easy steps
1. download 2.2.1 from this website : http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
[save the it on your desktop]
2. press shift key on your keyboard + restore button in itunes
3.in the new window that just opened, go on your desktop and search for iPod1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore
I downloaded iPod2,1_2.2.1_5H11A_Restore, will that work on a generation 1 iPod, or only generation 2?

well I have iTunes8.1 and iPod Touch 1.1.5 I tried this method on my mac , I hold the shift key but didn’t find the restore button
I also tried pressing the alt key but again I couldn’t find the restore button.

hey guys i never made any statement since , but now i ve something to say here, it seems like all what u guys are saying here is Magic. i did uninstalled the latest itunes on my laptop and installed the 7.7 version then i tried all the scenario u guys said here yet it didn’t work for me, now i’m back on the itunes latest version,still didn’t work. my ipod touch is 1.1.5 version and i just wanted to update to 2.0.2.
I believe some one really good about this can hit me up with my contact (eaxy4real@hotmail.com) so that we can exchange important ideas as well because i believe we have alot to learn about this ipod touch and its really gonna sound strange to you guys if i tell u that you can use your ipod touch as a phone.

With the 1403 error message thing, i got that aswell, and nothing worked. But i finally got it to work, all i had to do was download the three seperate file things from rapidshare. Then once i downloaded the files. I Then Download hjsplit from hjsplit.en.softonic.com/ .Once downloaded i opened hjsplit clicked join, then input file, then i browsed for the first file and clicked on it.. This joins all three together to make one file. Takes a min or so to join. After that Open itunes, Shift+Update = Everybody happy:)

It really does- i dowloaded a non- corrupt version from pirate bay-
follow the instructions, if it doesnt allow you to select your own file, an djust downloads one from the store, remeber you have to actually hold down shift AS your pressing restore.. then the dialog box opens up, and you just select the file..
just updated a 1.1.5 to 2.2.1 for free using the latest 8 itunes! amazing!
so I tried this, and it has downloaded well, but for the past five minutes, it has been *updating* my ipod. Still no change, so the ipod might be broken…

You really need to reword this make sure you keep the shift button down then click restore then a dialogue box will open choose the firmware file that you have previously downloaded and then everything else will be done automatically. you can get itunes version 7.7 from http://www.oldapps.com.

So, if you have a later version of iTunes (eg. 8.0) & it doesn’t let you install version 7.7.1 (7.7 no longer available for Mac OS X, but I presume 7.7.1 is good enough?) because you have a newer version, will this “fix” work?

For all the people using WINDOWS and pressing SHIFT and RESTORE and the explorer not coming up to allow to select the firmware you want run ITUNES in ADMIN MODE (vista) or TROUBLESHOOT COMPATIBILTY (windows 7) and it should allow to select it.

I got a 1G ipod touch 1.1.5, I want to upgrade to 2.0,,,. I also downloaded the 2.0_Restore.ipsw. I did “press SHIFT and click RESTORE..” but itune always show me the message below: “the Ipod could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible”

Instead of holding shift and pressing restore I believe you hold shift + “options”.. Haven’t actually got a mac myself but my friend had the same problem and that worked fine.
