Yang will be staying with the company in the role of “Chief Yahoo” and maintaining a seat on the company’s board of directors.

In a statement released this evening, company Chairman Roy Bostock says: “Jerry and the Board have had an ongoing dialogue about succession timing, and we all agree that now is the right time to make the transition to a new CEO who can take the company to the next level. We are deeply grateful to Jerry for his many contributions as CEO over the past 18 months, and we are pleased that he plans to stay actively involved at Yahoo! as a key executive and member of the Board.”

So now the question has been asked, who is going to be the next Yahoo CEO?

I have been noticing a lot lately that there has been numerous times on very large sites, in which I have seen banner display advertising of a certain size in a position of a completely different size. In this instance it was found on my Hotmail account home page. As we all know Hotmail is owned by Microsoft and Im sure Blackberry wouldnt be happy seeing their advertising dollars going to waste cause you cant see half the ad.

Why would Hotmail do this? Simple, because currently the best sized ads for display advertising in which pays the most is 300×250, so that is the ad they are showing, however showing it in a 728×90 slot which normally generates less.

I would be keen to make a list of other sites who also have the same practices. So far we have:

Hotmail

The Pirate Bay

Who else?

Users of the iPhone have long been looking for ways to utilize their powerful mobile phone as a portal to access internet from their laptops. Most cell phone by the major providers make it it possible to tap into the phone’s network and access it through the user’s laptop. Unfortunately the iPhone was never given such an ability so it fell to the development community to create their own applications.

It was not long that homebrew applications were created to tether the iPhone to a laptop, but Apple heavy handedly shut down the application and refused to support such an application, more because of the contract with AT&T rather then outright unhappiness of what the application did. Still, when the iPhone was “jail broken” tethering became an option and users were frantically trying to share the information with the masses and get them on board in support of jail breaking the iPhone. Apple turned around and said that no Apple store or mail location would support an iPhone out of service due to a botched jail break attempt. Such attempts would be consider a breach of agreement and null and void any support from Apple.

Until now most non-tech savvy users were unawares of jail breaking an iPhone and simply settled for the inability to link up service with their mobile computers. Until now…

The Announcement

On Thursday Nov. 6th, AT&T Mobility Chief, Ralph de la Vega announced that users of the iPhone 3G would be able to tether their phones to their laptops and use them as modems for internet service. The remarkable service will not be available until 2009, but users were left wondering just how it would be implemented, and how much it was going to cost.

Reports state that AT&T was afraid to offer tethering believing that the major influx of users would bring down the network, and thus frustrate customers from purchasing an iPhone. What they failed to realize is that customers were finding work arounds, and even while Apple was shutting applications like NetShare down for providing modem compatibility, AT&T remained deaf to user’s needs.

Information on Apple’s and AT&T’s tethering option became available six days later with costs of $30/month and a 5GB cap on data usage being the key release information. Already users of iPhone with bloated bills are complaining about the cost saying that applications like NetShare are offering their services free of charge. Why would you pay $30 if you know a tried and true app can provide you the same service for free? That seems to be a question AT&T won’t answer for now, but the real question is if tethering is now legitimate, will NetShare be allowed to offer its alternative on Apple’s App Store?

Still, to AT&T’s benefit, after acquiring Wi-Fi provider Wayport, the network is boasting another 20,000 locations to access the network. Could AT&T become successful in having iPhone users pay the monthly fee for the benefit of tethering. With so many access points now added to the already expansive network, only time will tell.

Microsoft have now made the decision to turn the Live.com site into a social network that will compete directly with Facebook and Myspace.

Microsoft Windows Live senior director Ryan Gavin has outlined why he is excited about the raft of social networking improvement in the new software, admitting that this would have been a more appropriate time to launch the ‘Live’ brand.

Talking to TechRadar, Gavin expressed his belief that Windows Live was a step in the right direction in giving people a platform to bring all of their social interactions together on the web.

“When I think about what’s happening online today it still is really two things – what’s happening in my world and what’s happening in the world and fundamentally those two activities make up 65 per cent of online usage.

“What’s happening in my world is where Windows Live is – in the communications and sharing section that makes up 33 per cent of the time online and includes email, instant messaging and social networking. Social networking has come on very strong as the third leg of that stool.

Legacy

Hotmail and what was formely MSN instant messenger make up the cornerstone of Windows Live’s audience, but adding in the social networking aspect is of paramount importance to Gavin.

“Live has its base in mail and messaging with 460 million active users and 17 per cent of online time specifically in the UK which is quite staggering when you think about it.

“The lines between instant messaging, email and social networking are really being taken down; we’re thinking about these things less as discrete categories and more as integrated thing.

“When you look at how things have evolved it’s been an explosion in rich ways to communicate in the past few years and it’s also set up a new set of challenges.

“So there’s been an explosion of ways to communicate but there’s only one consumer at the centre of this with one list of friends to manage or one list of contacts and they are saying ‘help me manage that list.

Communications

“There are ways that I like to communicate and ways that I like to be communicated to. Tons of ways to get hold of someone but I don’t want to log into five accounts to find out if someone is trying to get hold of me and it’s the same with stuff like documents, data and pictures. This gets spread over several devices but you should be able to access it easily

“Finally there are applications and a truth in that which says when you think about consumer service no one company is going to build the end to end consumer value properly so you’d better have platform so that third parties can make that first party platform better.

“And because it’s my data when I leave I’d better be able to take it with me.”

Gavin believes that this update indicates a sea change for the software and web applications, admitting that the past confusion over the move away from brands like MSN and hotmail to the ‘Live’ name make a lot more sense with this raft of changes.

“In some ways this would have been the best time to launch the Live brand,” he adds.

Since the launch of Myspace Music I still havent been able to understand where they are heading with this company!

Myspace prior to Myspace Music had pretty much every band in the world signed up to the service, that doesn’t mean they use the service frequently. Then when the service launched the changes were so minimal, but now Myspace had to offer the four major labels and some minor distributors a revenue share and possibly even equity. What did Myspace get in return for this revenue share and even equity deal? Not much at all!

The way Myspace and their music section is setup has not really changed. Myspace still provides exclusives on albums, myspace tours, and featured videos. Recently Youtube started a test with adding affiliate links to video pages, but this seems to be the obvious revenue stream Myspace Music is missing out on. With all the music that is on Myspace Music I can see them launching an Amazon Mp3 competitor very soon, and if they don’t they are out of their minds. In the meantime I would be adding affiliate links to each myspace profile, this could be added in a box under message area in the left column of every profile.

Myspace Music has been trying to find a new CEO for at least six months, and the job keeps on getting turned down, why? No one actually wants to be Myspace Music CEO because there is really no direction at the moment and for them to make changes they have to go through many levels of hierarchy.

Myspace Music has a great opportunity to build either a web app product or even a music product offering, but it will need to find the right person to run the show! Currently, Myspace has offered a revenue share to all the major labels and have nothing in return, and this has to change sooner rather than later, or they might be in a little trouble when it comes to hitting Murdoch’s revenue targets.

From October the 22nd you were able to purchase a Gphone G1 by T-Mobile in the USA. However, as I am based in the UK I’m trying to find out where I can purchase a Gphone. In the UK the Gphone was supposed to be launched on the 30th of October, but im still yet to hear or see any buzz about the product here in the UK.

Im very keen to review the latest phones that are actually going to compete directly with the iPhone. Therefore if you are interested in sponsoring Crenk a Gphone, Blackberry Storm or one of the six phones we have already profiled on the iPhone killers list, then please get in touch!

You can nominate your favorite blog in various categories. Since nomination categories are arranged like posts, you need to leave a comment on the award category with name of blog, the blog URL and RSS/Atom feed url (if possible). All anonymous comments will eventually be posted, but authenticated comments will be published immediately.

It would be appreciated if you could head over to The 2008 Weblog Awards and nominate Crenk!

I got a very interesting email this morning from an unknown Czech email address. It was to showcase a new site just launching called Allofmp3Download.com. Now doesn’t this site sound very familiar. Mid way through 2007 a site called Allofmp3 was shut down by the Russian government. Pressure from the United States, and a refusal to enter the World Trade Organisation (WTO) convinced the Kremlin to take the website down for good.

This new site Allofmp3download.com sounds very much like it is coming from the same source. It has the exact same characteristics as Allofmp3, but seem to be selling very cheap music video downloads instead of the basic mp3s. I’m guessing it will only be a matter of time before this new site is shutdown, so if you are after cheap music videos then make sure you head over to Allofmp3download now.

There are also other alternative sites that seem to be offering a similar service as the old Allofmp3.

MP3 Search carry in excess of 50,000 albums from 46,000 artists. Prices start at $0.19 per track. Most tracks are in high quality bitrate, 320 kbps. The site accepts major credit cards.

MP3 Fiesta hold nearly 67,000 albums from nearly 17,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.10 mark for single tracks with full albums coming in at roughly $1.00. Tracks are available from 192kbps and they take major credit cards.

Another allofmp3 replacement, LegalSounds.com prices are $0.09 per song, full album downloads average $1 each. Music carried includes the US Top 100 Albums/Singles, European Top 100 Albums and UK Top 50. Tracks are available between 192kbps and 320kbps and they take major credit cards.

Just Music carry around 160,000 albums from 44,000 different artists. Prices vary according to the amount of credit you apply to your account and range between $0.11 and $0.15 per track. Tracks are available at 192kbps and they take major credit cards and PayPal.

GoMusic claim to carry over 35,000 tracks. Prices are $0.19 per track and around $2 per full album. Tracks are available in various bitrates and they take major credit cards.

MP3 Skyline appears to be offering a huge amount of music. The site claims a staggering 2.2 million tracks available from over 128,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.35 mark for single tracks and encoded at 192kbps. Major credit cards and PayPal are accepted, along with other payment options. They also have a free download of the day, currently ‘Seeing Red’ by Killing Joke.

MP3 Sale boasts a cataolgue of over 90,000 albums from 23,556 artists. Prices are $0.15 for a single track with full albums around the $1.50 mark. Tracks are encoded at 192kbps and the site takes all major credit cards, PayPal and a wide range of other payment options.

iSound currently offer nearly 60,000 albums from 14,000 artists. Prices start at $0.11 per track up to a maximum of $0.15, depending on the amount of credit deposited in your account. Tracks are encoded at a minimum of 192kbps. Major credit cards and PayPal are accepted.
