Sony Unveils Its Apple iTunes Competitor

Sony has announced that they are planning on launching their own Apple iTunes competitor which will be an online store selling music, movies, and books as well as other downloadable applications for mobile products. This does sound very familiar, as Sony has already tried to compete with iTunes on the Sony Connect product which is no longer in existance. Sony’s top executives didn’t specify when the Internet store, tentatively called Sony Online Service, would go live or what it would look like. But the online storefront, announced at a management strategy meeting in Tokyo, is likely to bear some similarities to Apple’s iTunes store and would be Sony’s most ambitious attempt to link its products to its own vast library of digital content.

Current Chairman and CEO Howard Stringer has been set the mission to for a cohirant software strategy since taking over the top job in mid-2006.

The global recession has pummeled Sony’s businesses and left its earnings in a shambles. With consumers cutting back on electronics, Sony says it’s heading for its second straight loss. This fiscal year through March 2010, Sony predicts an operating loss of $674 million, from last year’s $2.6 billion loss. Sales are expected to slide 6%.

Sony executives refused to say how much it plans to invest in the new online service. Kazuo Hirai, executive vice-president for networked products and services, said the service would be based on Sony’s PlayStation Network. The Web-based gateway for PlayStation 3 video game consoles has been Sony’s most successful push into online commerce so far. Launched three years ago, the PSN has 33 million registered users and sells thousands of downloadable games, TV shows, and movies. This fiscal year, Sony expects the service to bring in $500 million in revenues, triple the previous year’s total. Last month, Sony signed a deal with Netflix that lets PS3 users stream movies and other content through the gaming console. “There’s some debate as to whether all PlayStation Network users would migrate to the new service,” Hirai said. “We would target quite a few of them.”

Will this new online store save Sony and get them back on track to the revenues of previous years? Will this also mean that Sony will remove their music from iTunes in the aim to get users to quickly adopt their new service?

Google Images Has a New Search Product Called Image Swirl

Google Image Search is used by most of us when we want to find an image for our blogs our websites – or even our desktop wallpapers. I’d like to introduce to you a new type of image search (currently in Google Labs) called Image Swirl. It’s a new way of displaying search results and it make the whole process much easier and more…fun!

When you first search for a term, the results are divided up into categories and are all stacked together as shown below.

When you click on one of these stacks the results are shown in a swirl format like below. At first, only one circle is displayed but then you click on an image that circle is moved further down the swirl and a new circle appears. This process repeats itself until your left with a huge swirl of results and the main circle has only one image left in it. When you click on that you’re brought to that image’s page.

Cross Fire: Free Online Multiplayer Shooting Game

Cross Fire is a completely free online multiplayer First Person Shooting game.

Gameplay:

It is very clear that the developers have aimed to just build a normal game that everyone will want to play. No photon lasers, No energy fields, Just some blood and guts.

Due to the developers spending less time on the flashy features, they spent a lot more time tweaking the features and trying to provide a complete and finished gaming experience.

Game Modes:

Search and Destroy: You win by either eliminating all members of the oposing team, or by completing set objectives (e.g. defusing or planting a bomb). This game mode is usually played in multiple rounds. The team with the most rounds won being the victor.

Team Deathmatch: An explanation shouldn’t be needed here. Eliminating as many members of the enemy party as possible is your sole mission. There’s only one round, with instant respawns for whoever is killed. The victor is the team that reaches the kill limit first.

Elimination: Similar to Team Deathmatch, only without instant respawn. The team that manages to eliminate all members of the enemy party wins a round. A set number of rounds needs to be won to win the game.

Ghost Mode: This is an innovating and unique game mode, newly introduced by Cross Fire. The Black List members are invisible, but have only a knife and C4. They need to blow up a target, but can be heard by the Global Risk members, who are visible, but have access to all weapons.

Cross Fire is a free 268 MB download. It’s intensive action, but light graphics ensure great fun on both the stronger and weaker computer systems.

Everyone knows what Facebook is! Facebook lets people share pictures, messages and online applications with their friends. Facebook seems to be everywhere and they even have a Facebook application for the Blackberry. A really neat feature of this app is their recent update which allows you to automatically link Facebook profile pictures of your friends with their contact entry in your Blackberry’s address book. Amazon Affiliates Prepare for Black Friday

Last week I did a post about how the Internet was getting all decked out in preparation for Black Friday. Well this morning when I checked my e-mail I had a newsletter from Amazon Affiliates who I occasionally use on my blog. They were pretty much telling me that if I wanted to make money now was the time to do it.

They have prepare special banners such as the one to the left and set up a special Black Friday section. What’s more (I’m sure this will please many bloggers reading this) affiliates earn 15% for every sale they refer on Black Friday – not bad.

Online sales for the week of Black Friday are set to rise into the millions as big sites such as EBay and Amazon prepare.

Skype Deal Finally Completed and Worth $2.75 Billion

So much has happened in the last few months with regards to Skype. eBay which bought Skype for $2.6 million back in 2005 has finally settled its litigation with Skype’s founders, and now the sale and restructure has been finalised.

The result: Skype now owns all of its technology, the founders received 14% of Skype and two seats on the Board of Directors, eBay keeps 30% of Skype, and the rest is owned by outside investors.

1. eBay now owns 30% of Skype, outside investors (including Silver Lake, Andreessen Horowitz, and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board) own 70%.

2. 14% or so is owned by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, the founders of Skype who have been added to the investor pool.

3. The Skype deal values the company at $2.75 billion, which is a little higher than the price eBay paid for Skype in 2005.

4. Joltid Limited is an investor in Skype. Joltid is owned by the Skype founders and was a major part of the legal dispute between eBay and the founders. The company held a key P2P technology that Skype now owns as part of this deal.

Twitter au français

Twitter have just announced the official release of a French version of the popular micro-blogging service. Over the past couple of months they have been aiming to release the service in Spanish, French, German and Italian. So far, they got Spanish completed and now they got the French version ready just in time for le Web – a massive tech conference in France held annually.

They released a blog post on their official blog but fittingly, it was all in French, so here is a rough translation for you:

The French twitteurs golds can already track people and companies they are familiar. Whether you attended @lepicerie or @lopera for your gastronomic outings, you read @lemondefr way to work or you listen @theteenagers on the way home or you’re a fan of @CanadiensMTL, there is a wealth of information useful to discover at any time.

To see Twitter in French, just check your settings and select “French” from the menu.

One last thing: some of the Twitter team will be in Paris on 9 and 10 November for LeWeb conference, presented by @loic. The specialists of our platform, Ryan Sarver (@rsarver) and Marcel Molina (@noradio) will present, among other things, a session developers. If you are in the region these days, please join us!

So now Twitter is available in English, Japanese, Spanish and French. Next? Those zany Germans!

New Chrome OS Screenshots and Video

Yesterday, Google released public information about its new Chrome OS at the official press event. They showed videos of the OS and gave real-time demonstrations to reporters.

It looks a lot like the popular browser of the same name. It uses tabs like those in the browser instead of buttons in the task bar. The colour scheme is also very bright with a lack of colour. This may pose problems for laptop users in terms of battery life.

Here are a few screenshots to give you an idea:

I guess this would be the equivalent of the start menu in Windows. It’s called the applications panel and it’s where you launch programs from. May of these are affiliated with Google as you would expect such as YouTube, Google Reader and GMail however they also have others such as Facebook, Twitter and their old rival, Yahoo Mail.

The Chrome browser is integrated fully with the OS, as one would expect. Other Google services such as Google Talk also work seamlessly with it by launching discreet pop-ups and notifications when user interaction is needed.

Here is chess, an example of an app, running in a tab in the new OS. All apps can either run as a tab or can be viewed in full-screen.

In the end each of them appeal to different markets, different segments of the industry and each of them function differently. So with those options we choose one that best fits our needs and we run with it. TubeRadio Redefines Online Music Listening

It’s not uncommon for us here at Crenk to come across web applications that do the same thing, the only differences are that some might do it better or worse than another. In this case, the team has come across a very interesting music listening application called TubeRadio.

Once again for the music lover in all of us, this just astounds me. Now it does not have the capability to tap into your own stored music, but as powerful as this search engine is, this could very well replace my Pandora or Last.Fm efforts, even if only for a little while. TubeRadio calls itself the Youtube for music. After you see the video below, you’ll know what I mean.

So what do you think? They search is amazing and very thorough. I’m surprised at how music it can find, and even more so by how seamless the integration of listening and/or watching your music can be. During the video the speaker mentions it being like your personal MTV. Yeah, MTV, from when it used to actually play music.

My experience with TubeRadio has been a good one. I’ve found what I want to listen to, it streams everything smoothly with little problem. In my opinion the only thing really missing is the ability to tap into my own music, but I can overlook that for now since I’m lining up some great music of my own, and of other recommended playlists.

Go Squared Release Their New Live Stats Platform in Closed Beta

Music Video Site Vevo To Launch on December 8th

Vevo has to be one of the most anticipated launches of the year and it is all set to go live on December 8th. The source is the Vevo twitter account. The announcement comes a day after Hulu said it too would make a foray into the music video space, with a deal to put up some music videos from EMI on its site.

If you have been living under a rock for the past 6 months, then Vevo is a new music video joint venture between the major record labels and YouTube. At launch the site will include music from Sony and Universal. This is a big move because the most popular sites at the moment on YouTube are the music video channels. Vevo allows YouTube to make even larger revenues because its a lot easier to place advertising against a quality peice of content like a music video, instead of the user generated content on its normal site.

Myspace Acquires Imeem (Music Streaming Service) for Only $8 million?

It has now been confirmed that Myspace has closed on its acquisition of Imeem, the music streaming service. It is paying a fire sale price of $1 million, sources familiar with the situation tell me, and could pay up to $7 million to $9 million in earnouts for key employees, who will likely include CEO Dalton Caldwell.

The deal basically values Imeem at around $8 million, even though Sequoia and Warner Music have already pumped $25 million into the venture.

I dont understand why Myspace thought it was a good idea to purchases Imeem! Was it just about the users who are still active on Imeem, cause it definitely wasnt about the technology or the earnings potential.

New Twitter ReTweet Beta

ReTweeting is the pretty much the equivalent of digging something multiple time – only with Tweets. When most uses see a retweet it must be from somebody that they are connected with. Now however, Twitter are testing a new Beta program which changes how retweeting works.

Basically,when a person who you are indirectly connected to, I.e. a friends of a friend, tweets something and a person you’re following retweets that tweet, it will be displayed in your timeline. As a member of this Beta I think this is a great idea. I’m finding that my community has grown (almost doubled) and the retweets are always valuable and worthwhile. This is definitely of increasing the quality and social worthiness of Twitter which I approve of.

NEC Flat Screen Perfects Dual Monitors

NEC is a company that’s been around for a while, and chances are if you’ve worked in anything related to tech from design to IT, then perhaps you’ve come across an NEC product. Known for innovation, they’ve really outdone themselves with the creation of the NEC CRV43.

Rather than struggle with a dual monitor setup, NEC went ahead and just combined the screens into a massive 43in. curved display that not only gives you the same dual monitor feel, only with out the need for two screens, but it also fully immerses you with the curved design making it easy to follow your work on the screen. Now while I love the concept, and the idea of reducing two monitors into one is ideal, it’s the price tag that worries me.

I can probably pick up two monitors for under $500. Both of them would be LCD screens, at least 20in+, so the price tag of approximately $5,000 seems just a little steep. Now not sure about you all, but I don’t come around 5k all that easily, so again, what is it that really makes this monitor stand out? Aside from being curved, HD, and having a seamless display? You be the judge.

Apple Tablet Has Been Delayed Till Late 2010

It has been reported that Apple plans to postpone the launch of their much anticipated tablet PC from an original March 2010 launch to late 2010.

Sources also indicated that in addition to Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology are expected to be manufacturing partners for Apple’s two tablet PC models – one of which will have a 10.6-inch TFT LCD panel while the other will have a 9.7-inch OLED panel.

LG Display currently is making OLED panels using its 4.5G production line and LG Display’s five-year US$500 million panel purchasing contract with Apple includes supply of OLED panels, the sources pointed out.

Since 9.7-inch OLED panels are currently priced at about US$500 and panel costs normally account for about 30% of the device’s total cost, Apple’s 9.7-inch OLED tablet PC is expected to have a cost of about US$1,500-1,700 (based on today’s prices), the sources estimated. However, OLED panel prices are dropping rapidly and are expected to reach an acceptable level for notebook products by 2011, so the sources believe Apple’s delayed schedule may include such considerations.

The sources estimate that Apple’s tablet PC cost will drop to around US$1,200-1,500 by the second half of 2010 with the retail price reaching about US$2,000. The price could be more flexible if bundled with telecom providers’ 3G services. Meanwhile, the 10.6-inch LCD panel-based Apple tablet PC is expected to priced in the US$800-1,000 range.

Microsoft Office 2010 – Public Beta Open

Microsoft Office 2010 has just entered its public Beta phase in the early hours of yesterday morning and is now available for download from the Microsoft website. I suggest you head over there now and get a copy of the anticipated program. Nobody is too sure how long the public Beta will last and I cant see it being too long. Perhaps just a couple of weeks. After all, they don’t need to wait ages for enough people to download it – this is Microsoft!

Facebook Definitely Coming to the PS3

Some of you may remember that last week we posted a screenshot which was supposedly from the PS3 website but had been leaked unintentionally. It depicted a Facebook logo on the PS3 Home screen indicating that Facebook was coming to the popular gaming console. Now, we can confirm that story.

In an update for the PS3 is out and ready for download. Along with outer features, Facebook is included. Here is what Sony said in an official press release:

Safe Internet Downloads on Softonic

There’s nothing like finding that application that helps get you through your day. Whether it’s a productivity application, or a business appliation, or a creative application, whether the need, it’s nice to know that there are alternatives to the costly pay versions. Sometimes freeware or shareware is just as good to get the job done and we turn to the internet for those downloads.

Now I admit in the past I had been going to Download.com, and found what I needed on there. But recently I was introduced to Softonic, and it’s equally as impressive as Download.com, but I’m just not a fan of the interface. I found it confusing, kinda clunky, and Download.com seems to have gotten the site structure of its heirarchy better laid out.

Still there’s tons of great apps on the site, which also features apps you should have. Sometimes you find apps that you didn’t now you needed, and that’s when you know that a site is bringing value to you. That value comes in what Softonic covers; Windows, Mac, Phones, Palm OS and Pocket PC’s. Seems like a healthy library, and growing everyday.

Real estate, whether it’s hot or not, one this is true, it’s all about the location. With that in mind, for those of us that are seeking a place to hang our hat, to call our home, there’s lots of apps out there that can help us find that dwelling. Whether your single, married, roomates, there are apps out there that can help you find the right place for you. In the UK there is one specific app that we had a chance to play with, and that’s MousePrice.

MousePrice is an extremely web and mobile app that can share pricing of real estate, provide you quotes, and some basic information based on your needs. The web app is a very simple website that asks you three questions before you submit and move onto your information. In an effort to increase transparency in the industry MousePrice puts as few roadblocks between you and the results. Finding the properties available in the area you selected then makes it easy for you to find the place that best fits your budget.

Alternatively the mobile app for the iPhone works just as effectivly. After inserting some basic information on the location you want, or using your specific location at the moment, it will map out, using GPS, the entire area providing you drop pins to click on in order to get your information. Once the information is displayed, properties in green mean the value has gone up, property in pink means it’s gone down, and yellow properties simply mean that there is not enough information to accurately give you the most recent information.

Acer Liquid A1 Released To UK Customers Before End Of November

The new Google Android phone on the market is the Acer Liquid A1. Instead of waiting a few months for Google Android 2.0 it has decided to move forward with 1.6 and get this great phone into market.

The Acer Liquid A1 is scheduled to be released in the next few weeks in the UK and is priced at £286 before tax. With the Acer Liquid A1 no contract is required based on that pricing.

Features include:

3.5 inch WVGA touchscreen
3G data access
Wifi and built in GPS
Bluetooth 2.0
5MP camera
SnapDragon processor

There’s still no word on whether a Google Android 2.0 upgrade option will be made easily available to Liquid A1 users.

SnailMailr: Send Snail Mail Online

SnailMailr is a cool web app that basically allows you to send normal postage mail via the internet. It works by you filling out details such as your address, the address you want the letter posted to and writing your letter. You can send a letter with four pages for $1 anywhere in the United States. Each subsequent page costs you and extra $0.15. Also, for an extra $0.15 you can remove their logo which is printed on the envelope as show.

There is no need to register an you pay the balance via PayPal. It costs more to send letters internationally. You can send letters no matter where you’re located. In many cases, it’ll work out cheaper if you’re posting to the US and you live elsewhere!
