Downgrade iPhone 3G 3.0 back to 2.2.1
Previously we have wrote a bit about upgrading and downgrading your Apple products. Today we wanted to run through the steps of downgrading your iPhone 3.0 firmware to 2.2.1.
Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. If iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.
You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode (this is required only if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone):
* Connect your iPhone to your computer.
* Turn iPhone off.
* Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
* Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
* A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
Browse the Summary Tab, For Mac user Hold down Option and press the “Restore” button. For Windows user hold down Shift and press the Restore button. Now you will be able to browse the folder where you have the iPhone firmware.Select the firmware & hit the restore button and cross your fingers for 5 minutes.
If you get error message like 1011, 1013, 1015, just ignore them(Actually the firmware 2.2 is already successfully installed). Fire Quickpwn 2.2.1 and jailbreak your iPhone use this guide
But if you encountered with error message like 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and try again.
If you have an Unlocked iPhone then use pwnage tool to make a custom firmware then enter DFU and restore / downgrade to 2.2.1 if not works in first time done it again n again.

Ok, I’ve finally figured this out. This HAS to be done on a PC. I’ve tried it a million and a half times on a mac. And it doesn’t work.
Ok, first if you’ve upgraded to 3.0 and you’re stuck -
1 – find a pc you can use
2 – plug your iphone into the computer via usb
3 – turn the iphone off
4 – put into DFU mode by holding down home and power for 10 seconds exactly, then release power and keep holding home until your pc starts making some noises. it might say down at the bottom of the screen, llike new hardware, apple iphone DFU, something like that. you know you’ve put into DFU mode correctly when the iphone looks like its off, and in itunes, all it should say is iphone in recovery mode. and the only thing you should see is iPhone. everything else should say n/a.
5 – make sure you’ve downloaded the iphone software 2.2. shift click on restore, go find the 2.2 ipsw file and click open.
6 – itunes should say its restoring blah blah blah. it should come back with an error code of 1013. this is what you want. (if you get a 1604 code or something like that, go back and redo the whole thing over again, you havent gotten it into dfu correctly)
7 – make sure you’ve downloaded quickpwn. close itunes after the error code. open up quickpwn 2.2.5. ou should get a message asking you to reset the iphone by holding down the power and home buttons for 15 seconds, then release home and continue holding power for 2 more seconds. do so. once you’ve done that, dont jailbreak it. it won’t work. open up itunes, and your iphone should be activated.
8- dont upgrade to 2.2.1, it will go back to the plug into itunes symbol. just wait 8 days until iphone 3.0 is released and upgrade to that.

if you’ve tried downgrading to 2.2, or 2.2.1 you are going to have to re upgrade to 3.0 to follow the above steps. make sure you put into dfu to upgrade to 3.0.
Problem is in network…i restore to 3.0 to 2.2.1 or lower…but i cant find any carriers…
Are You sure that upgrading from a downgraded 2.2 1st Generation iPhone is not possible? Why that?

Well, i was able to upgrade to 2.2.1 and then QuickPwn again w.o. problems. Now i will wait for the official 3.0 release + QuickPwn
I upgraded from Version 2.2.1 to the new Version 3.0 today. IT SUCKS! I lost WiFi and Bluetooth after upgrade. I tried contacting Apple Support, NO ANSWER! I can’t seem to find anyone who can help. I just got this phone 2-1/2 weeks ago, I’m about to return the iPhone and go back to an ATT Smartphone, I’ve never had this much trouble with a phone!

try turning off pc and iphone.
then turn on pc then iphone, it should detect iphone….but if it doesnt
try downloading a new itunes and then load and it should detect your iphonne just fine.

3-iTunes 8.2
These steps is to put the iPhone in a mode to allow iTunes to restore to lowers ipsw, if you do DFU the normal way iTunes will give all possibele errors such as 1600, 1601, 20 etc.
Now follow my steps..
A-Open QuickpwnRC3 and follw the steps and select 2.0.2 IPSW and when the screen turn to White color , unplug the USB ( Screen will remians White color).
B-Disconnect QuickpwnRc3
C-Reconnect iPhone
D-iTunes will discover iphone in Recover mode.
E-Shift+Restore to 2.2.1 (with Quickpwn 2.2.5 – http://daniel14.com/QuickPwn-225-2.zip)
Itunes continues the restore process without any erorr
100% works on booth 2G-3G

Thanks you so much mate. YOu defnitely have figured an awesome way to downgrade from version 3.0 to 2.2.1 firmware of iphone 2g. Because it worked perfectly with mine which is a 2g firmware. Initially when i got this phone it was perfectly working fine. Then i stupidly upgraded to 3.0 firmware through itunes and after that the started to show an emergency screen and itunes displayed to insert a supported sim.
I did try hundreds of methods to downgrade it but none worked except yours then i used quickpwn to unlock my phone but in that process i had to wait 9 hours and in the end I only got left with a pineapple on my iphone screen. So again I was stuck, did try hundreds of methods to get rid of it but none worked. So then what I did i restored my phoned back to firmware 3.0 and then redid your way which I had trust and thus it proved again to be successfull.
Listen guys i dont know how to get rid of that emergency screen now. My Iphone 2g is on 2.2.1 firmware, the itunes diplay to insert a supported sim. Although im living in UK and is using supported o2 network sim but even then I have this problem.

This is also helpful if you’re trying to update with one of the jailbroken ipsw files. The next steps would be to jailkbreak 2.2.1 and then update to the custom 3.0 ipsw by putting your phone in recovery mode and shift+restore in itunes. You can’t upgrade to custom 3.0 after upgrading to regular 3.0.

Does this method work for 3G iphones ?
I have tried loads of things and got error 20 / 1600 / 1602 and another one starting with X and a load of numbers and letters. so I downgraded itunes 8.1.1 because I heard that 8.2 was the problem, I got a couple of steps more but still ended up with error 1600 even when I used Pwnage Tool to put it into DFU mode.

when i use the restore, it doesnt show the file. it only shows the folders… iPhone1,1_2.0.2_5C1_Restore.zip is what i downloaded, then when i unzip it, it shows folder .fseventsd and Firmware. when i open firmware it shows all_flash and dfu folder, but when i open either it shows blank…. there is no IPSW file at all, i have tried several downloads from different site, it all shows blank no IPSW file. i have tried with WIndows 7, windows vista ultimate 64bit and windows xp nothing makes difference…

Remember , when you get the white screen close winpwn 2.5 and open itunes , it will be recognized as a recovery iphone , there youll hit SHIFT + RESTORE ( BUTTON ) PC , ALT(OPT) + RESTORE (BUTTON) MAC, and select the 2.2.1 firmware that is for your cell phone , be it 2G OR 3G. I posted the firmwares for your respective phone seperately, remember to download the one for your phone because you will get errors , and do not use any other itunes other than 8.1, WHY? BECAUSE THIS IS HOW IT WORKED OUT FOR ME. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!!!!!!
Follow all this carefully and you will suceed, we all hate 3.0 , causes battery drainage issues , and overheating problems ( at least for me ) . And we want to revert to 2.2.1.

i have both MAC AND WINDOWS and i prefer to do all this on my Windows XP machine. My preference.
So I was using Zends method with my Iphone 3g and itunes 8.2.
I get to white screen and it starts restoring then halfway through it stops and I get error 1302….
Do i need to downgrade itunes?

So. one week ago or so i tried to update my iphone to software 3.0…got an error message [forgot what that was] and than itunes couldn’t detect iphone and the computer just was saying that it found a new usb device…also, i got the ‘connect to iTunes’ screen on my iphone…

Im using a 3g and quickpwnrc3 wont work. I tried using quickpwn225 instead but it needs to match firmware from the file, and whats on the phone. And quickpwn225 doesnt support 3.0 im confused.

I only have a intel macbook OS X 10.5.7 can I do it on this, I have downloaded everything, have itunes 8.1 installed.
I still get error 1600 when I use method at top , on itunes 8.2 and 8.1
With your help i found out a good solution working for me very well after 5 hour of trying :
1. I used Itunes 8.2 , why? becouse 3.0 is not recognized on 8.1 so
2. I used QuickPwnRC3 and 2.0.2 software no problem if not all installed just install
3. I uninstalled 8.2 and installed 8.1 (ITunes i mean) why? becouse 2.0.2 is not recognized by Itunes 8.2
4. I used winpwn-2.5-BETA with 2.0.2 firmware and got white screen as Zend say`d and
5. I push in Itunes Shift+ Restore and but 2.2.1 software and doing now restore..hope this will help . link for firmware and softs i used are on this page just search and u will find it!
