It has been reported by our friends over at SE Roundtable that Google News might be changing its user interface. Here is what the new Google News will look like:
Its been rumoured that Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde has started a new online startup which might actually catch on. Introducing Flattr! Flattr is a social micropayment system which allows users to signup and purchase an account and then choose who they want to pay for their content, for example musicians, blogger, photographers and more.
Flattr is currently in limited beta but it seems to have a bit of potential. Im very interested to see if it catches on over time, or if it might have been better to do exactly the same thing but in a closed environment (eg. P2P).
Below is an introduction of the service, so let us know what you think!
You probably know that the WordPress community is a very significant one, and they are continuously improving the blogging experience; and they didn’t use so much time to develop the WordPress plugin for Google’s new toy: Google Buzz.
The Google Buzz impact maybe wasn’t as they expected; no surprise there, so far is representing a mix of a social network with micro blogging; both fields currently being dominating by Facebook and Twitter. But still, some of the features included are interesting to evaluate, and possibly the Gmail integration is one of the engines that will keep this app alive (even though there are already people hating it).
The configuration of this plugin (created by Ivan Lazarevic) is quite simple; just use your Gmail account that you want to associate with Google Buzz and the number of updates to be shown.
Living in Ireland has its pros and cons. One of those cons which I share with many Europeans is that often, the US shows which I love aren’t shown on TV here until a few months has passed since their US debut. Gets kind of annoying when I have to read tweets and blog posts about shows I can’t watch until Summer. TV Gorge though, is most definitely the best service I’ve come across to get around this problem.
Basically, it acts as a big search engine to trawl the internet for shows which are location restricted. So shows which as available on the US-only Hulu and other such services are viewable on TV Gorge. Nice.
Best of all this is free. They have squeezed into a small gap in the market for users in Europe and Australia and are expanding quickly. Life Hacker recently did a profile of them for users who want to watch the new season of Lost, and were amazed at the amount of popular TV shows which they could easily watch. This included Dexter, Archer, Dollhouse, Entourage along with over 125 others, and growing.
How many of you have created your iTunes playlists and feel like your list is never complete unless you’ve got everything you need for every song including album art? If you’re one of those types, then I’m right there with you. Nothing frustrates me more than playing music on my MP3 player and seeing no album art with a song. Perhaps I’m OCD, perhaps it’s just the huge music fan in me, but Album Art Search has been a holy land of sorts for all the album art I need.
The site offers up the album art of some of the most sought after albums, straight from the homepage, but digging deeper you’re able to find what you’re missing after a search for a specific album. The categories give you a broad based idea of what you’ll find, and by clicking on the image you can go to Amazon if you’d like to buy the physical media. You can also bookmark and save the images for your own use.
So now there’s no reason for any of your playlists to be without album art. Dig in, find what you need and let us know what you think. There are other competitors out that I think do it better, but I like the ease of finding what I need on this platform.
A bit of an embarrassment for Mozilla Firefox – and it comes at a a bad time too, right when they’re loosing their dominance in the browser world as Chrome catches up.
Mozilla has been known as a very safe browser as compared to its old enemy, Internet Explorer. In fact, many people used it for just that reason. So the last thing Mozilla needed was reports of Malware in two ad-ons which were available for download from their website.
“Two add-ons in the experimental section of addons.mozilla.org were found to be containing malware,” Mozilla said on its security blog. “These were not originally detected with the anti-malware scanning tools that we have been using. We have since increased the number of scanning tools, and will be taking additional steps to minimize the risk of further incidents.
It is thought that well in excess of 4,000 downloads of the ad-ons have taken place since they were first released in September. So are you one of the thousands of people who inadvertently infected their own machines? Well if you downloaded Sothink 4.0 and all versions of Master Filer then there’s a good chance you are. These installed Win32.LdPinch.gen and Win32.Bitfrose.32.Bitfrose Trojan respectively. So if you have downloaded these, I suggest running a scan of your system ASAP.
There’s a strong rumor saying there’s an internal Facebook project developing to be released to the public soon: Facebook’s Webmail.
As greedy as it could sound to you, it really doesn’t seem like a big shock, Facebook is the biggest social network available with over 350 million users and with an amazing growth in the last few years. Constantly looking for new ways to expand; a while ago we’ve showed you an interview of Facebook’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckeberg, that said Facebook is not intended to be a simple website, they are looking to represent your identity in Internet.
There isn’t much information about the project, which already has a codename: Titan and that your mail address will be the same used in your vanity URL. In my case should be augusto.a.alvarez@facebook.com. And of course, you will be able to set E-Mail Clients like Outlook or Thunderbird to access your mail using POP or IMAP protocols.
The webmail really sounds like a very possible next step. Could we expect next a bigger instant messaging experience?
Daytum is a web application that lets you set up any number of various displays tracking virtually anything you want, and presents it in a beautiful way.
Daytum is a great tool for goal tracking. For example, maybe you want to track how many minutes you run every day, or even track how many words you write on a daily basis.
The point is, anything you can think of can be tracked. Daytum includes the ability to create lists, charts, averages, time statistics, and even the latest, largest, or smallest entry.
Knowledge is power, but power doesn’t mean you should be a jerk, or do anything illegal. Knowing how to pick a lock doesn’t make you a thief. Consider this post educational, or a proof-of-concept intellectual exercise.
BackTrack has also updated to version 4 since we last featured it, but the process appears to have remained basically the same. The interesting thing about BackTrack is how easy it is to crack a WEP-encrypted network, which serves as a very good reminder to use WPA encryption to significantly boost your home network security.
Petville seems to be the latest game that is rising fast on Facebook. In Petville users can raise, dress and care for a pet that you create. Visit your friends’ houses and play with their pets to earn coins you can use to make your own house the coolest on the block!
For FaceBook game players, here is another game that will allow you to create your own character, name your pet, give him/her a home. The game was developed by Zynga (the kings of everything Ville!)
USA Today shared a fun toy that basically takes all of my wordy research and converts it into a simple interactive tax-rate calculator. You put in how much you earned in any given year, and the calculator shows your effective tax rate and where your tax dollars go.
Note for the app: Your effective tax rate reflects how much you actually pay in taxes. Your marginal tax rate (or tax bracket) reflects how much you paid on the last dollar you earned.
