The funding round came from Notion Capital. Tradeshift have already had seed funding from Paypal who are their technology partner.

Tradeshift is a growing player in the business social network market with customers including the NHS, and the French and Irish governments.

Tradeshift was originally created in 2010 by pioneers in open e-business who created the e-invoicing system for the Danish government, it now covers over 180 countries with more than 50,000 registered businesses and is the world’s fastest growing business social network, with growth in 2011 of more than 60% per month.

“Tradeshift is undoubtedly one of the most exciting businesses we’ve come across since setting up Notion in 2009,” says Stephen Chandler, Managing Partner at Notion Capital. “Tradeshift is led by a team who are real subject matter experts in their field, extremely strong both technically and commercially and have a very clear vision of where they want to take the business – it has the potential to become the de facto business social network for B2B communications and processes. Tradeshift is the single most disruptive proposition to this market and is set to play a major part in its transformation.”

Facebook has unquestionably become a part of life for the majority of internet savvy people around the globe. Whether you’re a high school student using it to gossip with your friends, in your 30′s looking for old classmates, or an entrepreneur or bussiness owner publicizing your company, Facebook seems to have something for everyone.

I have always been savvy with technology and computers – I started working with my first computer at the young age of 8 and when I was 10, I taught myself how to program in BASIC literally overnight. For some reason, though, I didn’t immediately jump on the Facebook bandwagon the moment it became mainstream. It seemed silly, frivilous and simply trendy. I had been using MySpace and enjoyed the ability to control the look and feel of my page. I managed to find a few old friends on it, but most of them never posted anything. Mostly I just used my page as a personal blog to track my mundane life.

Then one day, I finally took the leap. I joined Facebook.

At first the pages looked dull and boring. A stark contrast to MySpace’s colorful pages, flashing blinkies and auto-loading music and videos. But what I quickly realized is that everyone I had on MySpace was also on Facebook and… guess what… they were actually posting! Next I realized that not only were my old friends there, but so were dozens more. To date I have connected with nearly my entire High School class, a childhood best friend I thought I would never find, old teachers, college friends, remote family and even old boyfriends (most of whom I was already still on speaking terms with). While these may not be people I feel the need to converse with on a regular basis, I feel priviliged that I can know what great (or terrible) things are happening in their lives, offer congratulations or condolenses, provide advice, wish happy birthday’s or just simply “Like” their status because… well… I liked it!

Today, like many people, I am hooked on Facebook. I have not only used it to connect with friends, but I have also used it to promote businesses I have been a part of and to follow other businesses I have interest in. And let’s not forget the oh-so-addicting games. So what if Facebook never existed? Where would be then?

Perhaps MySpace would have remained more popular. Or perhaps social networking as we know it today wouldn’t exist – at least not at the level it is now. Businesses would still rely solely on expensive advertising, email marketing and banner ads. While these methods are still used, Facebook’s advertising has been, in my experience, invaluable.

Some say people would call, write or speak in person more. But let’s be honest here, when was the last time you called someone just to update them on your life or find out about theirs? In High School? 15 years ago or so? People tend to stay in their own circles – in their comfort zone. Facebook allows us to open up and reach outside of our circle. It extends our comfort zone.

One thing is for certain, the world would be a less “friend”lier place. I never would have found my childhood friend or connected with classmates who had been outside my circle in High School. This also means I never would have intended to attend a reunion, which I now look forward to. Facebook has given me the ability to reach outside my daily circle and laugh, cry and vent with old and new friends alike. It has rekindled friendships and connected me with people I thought I would never get to talk to again.

So despite the addicting games and countless hours easily wasted away with Facebook, I am thankful it was created. I am thankful I took the leap. I am thankful for finding friends.

Case in point: Life just wouldn’t be the same without Facebook.

Facebook Deals will be launching in 5 US cities tonight and then will be launching in Europe in about three months time. There have already been a lot of comparison between Facebook Deals, Groupon and LivingSocial, but its expected that unlike the other services Facebook Deals wont charge retailers a percentage of the revenues.

Groupon and LivingSocial are controlling this market simply because of their technology and user base. Now, Facebook with the worlds largest user base is going to enter this very competitive and lucrative markets. Groupon and LivingSocial better look out!

“Social” was very much the buzzword of 2010 and the eager smattering of the word throughout western media does not look to be ending any time soon.

Companies and their subsequent brands are realising that their audiences are largely located on social networking hubs online and are having to change their marketing tact to reflect the needs of their target markets. It has also been suspected for a while that social is becoming more important to the mysterious algorithm which determines the rankings of web pages in relation to certain search terms in Google. This was seemingly confirmed by the search engine’s recent announcement of Google “+1” (which provides SERPS based on a system similar to Facebook’s “Like” button) which is expected to be rolled out within the next 6 months.

Social elements have even been employed by the videogame industry too but for a different reason; to extend the longevity of interest in games. Well, at least one game anyway…

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (the 16th title in the NFS series) was released in November last year. The game’s trailer opens with the following statement:

“WARNING:

Those in relationships are advised against playing of this videogame.

Connecting to the NEED FOR SPEED AUTOLOG enables extreme competition through exact documentation of records and stats from your friends.

Hard feelings, creative profanity and grudge matches are likely.”

The NFS: HP Autolog comprises a “wall” akin to the type that you would find on social networking website Facebook but it is localised within the game only. When a players console is connected to the internet, Autolog automatically keeps connected friends updated with regards to new records set, career progress and challenges from peers. The feature also provides players with recommendations based on the latest activity of their friends. Players can also leave visual snapshots of in game moments on the wall and as well as comments next to the posts announcing newly achieved records. This makes for a dynamic competitive element and thus; helps longevity of interest in the game for as long as possible after their release date.

Autolog is to be featured in the next Need for Speed title (‘Shift 2: Unleashed’) but I am more interested to see whether other games developers follow suit and integrate this type of social arm into their own titles in the future. You think that they would when you consider the fact that Hot Pursuit won a BAFTA for its multiplayer element and the gaming press couldn’t commend the Autolog enough. NFS: HP is also the most highly critically acclaimed racing game of the decade (receiving an average of 90% in reviews) and it has shifted over 5 million copies to date, indicating that the feature was both embraced and loved.

Guest post by: Kat Cole is keen XBOX 360 gamer and thinks that her skills should not be underestimated simply because she is female! This year she is most excited for the release of the extremely long awaited Duke Nukem Forever which she has already pre-ordered from GameStop – even though it is not released until June!

It seems as though Myspace is trying to get their music product back on track and at the center of this is a new product called Wildfire. Myspace are testing their new Wildfire product, which aims to help bands control all of their social networks.

MySpace Music vice president of Product Roberto Fisher, who shared preliminary details at a meeting held Saturday by the Music & Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA) in Los Angeles. ”Are you aware of the people that are most valuable to you in social media marketing, to help amplify what you do?” Fisher posed. ”Wildfire is designed to help you understand the tree of engagement that happens in the time that someone does something. So, we can pinpoint in any tree of distribution the people that gave you the most reach when they heard something and re-amplified it.”

So, it’s “where in the trees you should invest,” instead of burning the whole tree with a blowtorch, according to Fisher, which sounds like a refreshingly targeted idea. But this involves a lot of close observation, on a massive scale. Accordingly, MySpace is essentially ‘wiring every single action’ that happens in the social networking sphere as it relates to artists, and then assigning scores to the most valuable ‘branches of the tree.’ ”You can score it all,” Fisher described. ”I can tell you if user A is more valuable than user B. And when you did X, these are the things that caused Y to happen.”

Pingdom has put together some great numbers which outlines 29 social networks that have over 1 million visitors per day. For traffic data, they used Google Trends for Websites.

Note that these numbers are estimates made by Google from a variety of data sources, so they will not be 100% correct, but should still give us a good idea of how the sites compare.

There has been a great deal of talk about the upcoming social networking product from Google codenamed Google Me. We dont seem to be any closer to have confirmed information about the product, but there are rumours that its scheduled to launch at this years I/O developer conference on the 10th and 11th of May.

While this is not expected to be a direct competitor to Facebook, its supposed to be a social layer over Google’s products. There are already a great deal of personalisation and social layers in Google products, so it will be interesting to see how it can be co-ordinated to improve the useability of their products.

Adidas Superstars represents one of the most popular models of the German company; and also is one of the most used today as vintage models of shoes. And now, for their 35 anniversary, they are preparing the Facebook and Twitter models.

Honestly I’m not quite convinced about all the “Facebook” included in this model, sounds a bit too much. On the inside they’ve also included the following “Facebook is a social utility that connects you with the people around you” and “Making the world open and connected”.

The Twitter model seems a bit better; they’ve included the Twitter bird logo and the original color used by the micro-blogging web app.

“So, you work at a big corporate, huh? And you’re not allowed to use Twitter… Wouldn’t it be awesome if there were a Twitter tool that looked just like Excel?” This is what @elliottkember says to all those Twitter users that are afraid to open a browser or any Twitter application related in their offices.

Spreadtweet, an Adobe AIR app, offers three different types of user interface: Office OSX, Office 2003 and Office 2007.

There was 2003, and a young fellow by the name of Mark Zuckerberg started with a draft idea for a social network; and the name he came up with was FaceMash.com. Now, more than 7 years later, the final social network name Facebook.com has over 500 million users and FaceMash.com is for sale.

This was Zuckerberg first domain for the Harvard social network, which apparently was a college version for “Hot or Not”. The idea of a social network started to grow, and the domain name selected end up with Facebook.com in 2004. By 2007, Mark Zuckerberg did not renew the first domain name and Rahul Jain took it.

FaceMash.com is now for sale in Flippa. The auction started at U$S8000, and the current bid is at U$S19000 with 15 days to go.

If you have an idea for a social network startup, then this is the domain name for you.

Social Media and Twitter icons are probably the most used in blogs and web sites, here we provide for all you two links for a very neat set of icons in an original black design.

The social media icons are provided by BlackSmith and you can find for Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, YouTube, digg, Reddit, Delicious, etc. Download the entire set from here.

And the black set for Twitter, provided by iconhive, is definitely my favorite ones; which are available for Windows and Mac. Download from here for the Windows version; and this link for Mac.

Dan Zarella is, as the blog says it, the social media scientist; and created a very interesting tool: “Most ReTweetable Words Finder” given a keyword, shows the most retweetable words.

The use is quite simple as well: enter a keyword and click analyze. The tool will return a list of words that were found to be related to that word and highly ReTweetable. It will also display the number of Tweets and ReTweets analyzed to generate the list. Here’s an example of “Microsoft” keyword:

We can find some words like “kinect”, “gaming”, “camera”, “ironruby” or even “fetish” (?).

The tool compares words found in ReTweets against non-ReTweet Tweets. Using the last 24hours, the tool analyzes up to 1500 Tweets and 1500 ReTweets per word.

If you are interested in retweeats, Dan created a report: “The Science of ReTweets”

As you probably know, Facebook reached the amazing number of 500 million users, all time record for a social network. But how are those users distributed around the world? What is the general adoption for Facebook in the entire population? The answer, right here:

In this map we can evaluate the number of population of each country shown vs the number of Facebook users.

Tableu software created a very interesting and simple report where we can find all of this answers. Take a look:

The country with more users is the United States with 125 million.

The United States has the higher rate of insertion 40%.

In second and third place are: UK (26 million) and Indonesia (25 million).

If Facebook were a country, it will be the second largest, just behind China.

Mark Zuckeberg once said that Facebook’s future is not a website, but people’s identity in the Internet. Getting closer Mark, getting closer.

Facebook is introducing, just for a few users, a new and outstanding feature: Face recognition. In the process of uploading photos, Facebook will automatically recognize the faces on each photo and you can start tagging from there.

This new feature appears right after Facebook acquired Divyshot, and the main idea (at least for now) is reducing the amount of clicking users have to execute whenever they are uploading pictures. But wait, if you don’t see this option available in your account, don’t worry; Facebook is kind of beta-testing this feature in 1% of the entire Facebook population.

The face recognition does simplify the uploading process, but it does not automatically tags any of the photos. That automation sounds like the next step, though.

Pick&Zip is another great and free web app to apply on your Facebook profile. Within just a few clicks you can automatically download pictures from Facebook’s profiles.

The usability is quite simple and the look-n-feel of this web app is very similar than the one we see when we are uploading pictures in Facebook. How to use Pick&Zip:

Access the Pick&Zip site

Login to the application using your Facebook account

Browse your friend’s photos or your own.

Select the pictures you wish to download.

Click on “Review & Download” to get the pictures in PDF or a ZIP file.

The image quality is the same one that is shown on Facebook albums.

A great option in this web app is the possibility to select “Find my Pictures”, and retrieves all the images that you were tagged.
