Apple Loads Aresenal with Quattro Acquisition
Acquisitions seem to be the trend for the new year. After MySpace acquired Imeem, Google acquired AdMob, Seesmic acquired Ping.fm, and now Apple acquires Quattro. It seems like you’re not anyone until you’ve acquired or been acquired. Big news stories all the way around, but for Apple this is a bold move in a space that has been dominated by Google. When it comes to mobile marketing capabilities, Google seems to be the clear winner, with AdMob added to its already expansive services it seemed like a clear cut win. But just this week Apple and Quattro announce the acquisition and things in the mobile marketing space seem to be heating up.
There’s not doubt that Apple is positioning itself for a long battle. For years rumors of iPhone killers have bubbled up and been put down, but now with Google in the game, rumors start to look more real when a company like them comes into play. Google is positioning their newly branded phone as the alternative to the iPhone hoping to eat up market share, but also establish a mobile marketing network that entices businesses to jump on board.
Apple, never one to be out down has defended it’s crown rather well this past decade with the introduction of the iPod, now the iPhone. A great defensive move for Apple, but is it enough? Announced on the day that Google makes its own announcement is no coincidence. What I’m also interested to see is how this plays a role in the release of the supposed “Apple tablet”.
What does the future hold for these two battle giants? Unsure right now, but we as users will hopefully benefit from the fall out.
