Tumblr About to Pass WordPress For Blog Hosting

WordPress.com is closing in on 20 million hosted blogs on the platform. WordPress.com is the blogging service from Automattic’s brilliant WordPress software.
However, it seems as though Tumblr is quickly catching up with WordPress.com in terms of blogs hosted. Tumblr is only just short of 20 million blogs also, so look for them to overtake WordPress very soon.

You mean ‘short of 2 million’, not 20 million.
Interesting comparison, I wouldn’t have guessed the total might be so close. Still I’m not sure blogs are the best unit of comparison for either site’s popularity, as it’s easy for individual bloggers to update multiple blogs on Tumblr (I maintain 7 separate Tumblogs). On the other hand, it would be of great interest to read how many blogs are regularly updated, as well as how many unique visitors/readers each blogging site attracts.
It’s also worth factoring in that many WordPress users elect to create self-hosted WordPress sites, not just WordPress.com blogs.
