Amazon Buy Their Own Members Only Retail Club: BuyVIP

The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon has just acquired BuyVIP, a members only retail club for $96.5 million. It seems like Vente-Privee, Gilt Groupe and others have spawned a new industry that is a must have at the moment.
BuyVIP is focused on providing seven key markets, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Portugal, Poland and the Netherlands. It is interesting to see that they don’t service the French market, which is completely dominated by Vente-Privee. BuyVIP also claims to have six million members in those seven European countries.
It seems like Amazon is trying to acquire company in specific retail areas. Zappos, Woot and Amie Street have all been acquired by Amazon recently. It makes sense that the company will now focusing on buying a company in the Daily Deal space, such as Groupon or even one of the Groupon clones.
