How To Use Spotify if your based in USA or Other Countries

spotify logoSpotify has of course been in the news a lot lately. However, the Spotify service is still only available to users in certain countries, such as UK, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Spain and France. Thus if your based in the USA the Spotify service is currently not available for you to use, until now.

A few people have been reporting that they have used the following steps to get a Spotify account when they are based in the USA.

1) go to http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/
2) enter the following URL: https://www.spotify.com/en/get-started/
3) Create your account, for UK postcode – check http://www.postcodesearch.org.uk/

Let us know if this still works in your country!

I love Groovshark. Its much more convenient and I don’t imagine there are any geographic restrictions yet.

    • Steven Finch says:
Grooveshark is great. There are no geographic constraints, but they dont have the same playlist and mobile applications as Spotify. Plus Grooveshark dont have all majors signed up, so there could be a legal issue further down the line.
  14. acidman says:

Please help!! I am currently in Canada, I had a Spotify account in Spain, then I left and now I changed my profile putting that I have a UK postcode, it still says that:

    Subscription status

Your account can no longer be used from abroad, since the maximum travel time is 14 days for a Spotify Free account. To continue using Spotify from abroad, sign up for Spotify Premium which gives you unlimited travel access.

Does this mean that I should just re-open a new account? Argh!

    Thanks so much!

    • tina says:

you should pay for premium, then you can have your spotify account on 3 different devices, and play unlimmited abroad of the countries spotify is in.

  20. Mairead says:

I used to live in the UK and now living in Luxembourg. Suddenyl spotify isn’t letting me use it anymore let alone sign in! Any tips on getting it working if you already have an account?

  29. Sam says:

Hey, have been searching for just this thing for quite a while, moved to the US from Sweden about 2 months ago. But I already had an account, and I’ve tried all the options I’ve find to fix it, but nothing seems to work. So, if you already have an account, how can you get it to work?

  30. Igs says:

Works in Australia even today. The hardest part is finding the post code. The tool provided in the link is useless just look up Google Maps and grab from there. Thanks for the great tip, a good proxy will get you around these issues anywhere.

I had spotify in the UK and when I used it in Canada my free trial ran out. Just used the advice above and it worked, but now Spotify is telling me I only have 20 hours of use left. Any suggestions?

  37. Per says:

    Sweet, works in Canada… THANKS!!!

    • JR says:

Does it tell you you only have 20 hours of Spotify use (in the top right corner)?

      • Joe says:

Yep, works in Toronto, Canada. JR, yes, there is a timer for the “Open” account. Here’s what the FAQ says:

How much music can I play with Spotify Open?

When you open your account you receive 20 hours listening time – that’s equivalent to listening to 25 albums or 300 tracks EVERY month! You will then receive five additional hours every week from the week after that, at roughly the same time of day as you created your account.

If you do not use all of this listening time, the listening time is saved up to a maximum of 20 hours.

Listening to your own imported local files within Spotify does not use up your listening time.

To play more music you need to subscribe to Spotify Unlimited or Spotify Premium.

  38. running up the hill says:

Germany is still fine … but not so easy to find proxies to be used.

  39. Hmmmm says:

It only works for 2 weeks in canada… cause you get 2 weeks of mobile spotify with spotify open. And I’m not able to register for spotify premium because it detects the paypal account is canadian… so unless you get someone abroad to register a premium account for you I don’t see how this could work?

  40. Stefan says:

yay! still works in Australia !

  41. sepehr says:

get a vpn connection that changes your IP address to a Swedish one! it works! for 2 $ a month

  42. jim of cairns says:

Thanks very much, it works a treat. I am soooo happy!!!! Spent all day trying to stump it, it hasn’t failed yet. Its especially good for old jazz and blues recordings. What an age we live in!!! Can’t wait for the premium service to be available in Australia. For now the ads are a small price to pay for the access.

  43. ben says:

Works in the Great White North (Canada)

  49. nick says:

i get the account all set up, but when i open the player it says “your country does not match the one set in your profile”. I’m in usa and used the daveproxy instructions above. is this a common problem?

  50. andy smith says:

doesntwork i moved to oz from england . so had all my uk addresses etc …. it work for about 2 weeks then they cut me off

  51. Luis says:

I’m in the US and I followed the above process. It was working great in Dec. until recently. I could not get any music instead I got a notification that the account could only be used outside of the UK for no more than 14 days and now I had to upgrade for “unlimited travel”. 2 upgrades, one for US$ 16.00 or US$7.00 but if using a credit card it must be issued in the country of origin meaning the UK. So not working any more. To bad I found some great music.

  52. Morteza says:

The only thing you have to do is to have someone from UK, or where ever your spotify is supposed to be from. Have someone that you know go in there form that country, and then you can use it abroad again.

  53. that random guy says:

IT REALLY WORKS, O MY GOSH, THIS IS INSANE, I REALLY LOVE IT, DO IT, DO IT NOW! EVERYONE LOVES IT.

  54. Steven Z says:

This works great and all, but the whole limited-to-14-days-abroad thing is quite annoying…I’ve read up on two methods to fix it:

    A) to use a UK-based SOCKS/HTTPS proxy in Spotify’s preferences, or
    B) the [purportedly] easier method, logging into Spotify’s website and changing your country of origin in your profile, thus theoretically resetting your time abroad to 14 days again.

Has anyone tried B to see if it works? If it does, that would be great because it seems to be the easier method; also, I’ve heard running Spotify through proxies is quite slow.

    • jehstr says:

I tried B.. In my account & profile settings i can’t change country, unfortunately.

  55. DrillKey says:

I just moved from the Uk to AUSTRALIA and this worked just perfect so simple love it thanks so much whoooo

  56. Jonathan says:

I live in Canada and the process works like a charm. Everything works.

  59. megan says:

working in oz! will hopefully keep working! …thanks pal :o )

  60. Michael says:

    Not working for me (Australia).
    Proxy has probably been detected…

  61. AirSah says:

I’d say use Overplay VPN (http://www.flashrouters.com/overplay) to do it from the US. They’re VPN has worked best from the 5 or 6 major services I’ve tested.

  62. Catherine says:

    A Huge thanks!!!!! =D

  63. Mark G. says:

Yes it’s work here in Quebec

  64. John says:

Working in Ontario – Many thanks!

  65. John says:

  66. martin says:

When is it coming to Asia? I wanna listen to some asian songs

  67. Viguy says:

Yup still works here in Canada.. thanks.

  68. Silvana says:

    Work for me!!! Thank you!!

    PERU

  69. Paresh says:

Well, even if you registered with a ‘spotified’ country’s postal code, the free account will only let you use it in a non-spotified country for something like 14 days; then, it asks for a premium account.
I was one of the early registrants (by invitation) in one of these countries and now since I have subsequently used it a while in Germany and am back home in India (over 2 yrs since :D ), it no longer lets me access without buying premium… :(

  70. Louise says:

    Keep getting Invalid ‘client_id’.
So won’t work in Oz :(

  71. Leemouyen98 says:

    Not functioning in Malaysia, yet…><
