It has been reported by VentureBeat that Hulu (the YouTube killer, lol) has gone into private testing today. As we already know this is a joint venture between NBC and News Corp, who have been having copyright issues with YouTube and thats why the business started. Mark Hendrickson also have more on Hulu with some screenshots inside the private testing.
Hulu will be the exclusive online provider of videos from NBC and News Corp, and it will then syndicate the material to other sites, including AOL, MSN, MySpace, and Yahoo, but apparently not YouTube.
Hulu got $100 million in backing from Providence Equity Partners, and arose because of animosity from NBC and News Corp toward YouTube, in part because that site kept hosting vidoes containing copyrighted videos.
Hulu is not meant to be a YouTube killer (although a lot of people have been mentioning it) but its purpose is to retain a greater percentage of profits than it would have from YouTube alone. I think the principle is sound and the company will work, but just dont look for Hulu to challenge anyone on market share in the online video arena.
